Living Room / Re: How do you tag files?
« Last post by justice on October 20, 2007, 08:28 PM »
we need a document management solution for the desktop.
make my documents a database,
with tags, versoin control and notes about where files are copied to out of the system.
I admire your persistance but in the end its just abusing a crap system (the concept of filenames and organisnig by folders).

If you need UNC support in the free version just work around it by mapping the share to a network drive. Seems to work fine.

At work I'd like to set up scheduled tasks to run maintanance every once in a while. However my account has a password change policy. I want the task to run under my user account but not have to manually alter my passwords for every task. Is there any way?
If not can someone recommend an alternative free task scheduler that can do this? I want to export the tasks so I can reuse them on system reinstall.

I am aware tasks can be run under the system account but I'm not sure what the implications of this is for the functionality / permissions etc. Are there any tasks that will not work like this? (for example synchronization tasks over mapped drives I presume will fail).

1st: slow copying and moving operations, as in very slow, even with a fresh install, new computer. Made no sense until I read that it was built in to discourage copying too many items without the usual DRM shackles.
Do you have a source for that? I really doubt that this is the case. Ms also published patches to improve performance, things will be better now than they were last february.

Living Room / Re: Do you archive/store your downloads (mainly install files)?
« Last post by justice on October 17, 2007, 06:49 AM »
I thought of archiving downloads but they're always such an unassorted bunch of files, and with two pcs at home one will always be connected to the net if the other one fails.
I've never ever resorted back to an older version, however i tend to keep a copy of downloads of purchased software now because they tend to charge if you want to download it again *grr*.

That dialogue could do with a makeover too, all assets are misaligned and the buttons are floating instead of being tucked near the borders.

I can also see opportunities to create feeds on "last accessed", "creation date" or a combination of these with "last modified date". However it seems this will add another set of commandline options that you probably don't need to get comfortble with 99% of the time.

So I am thinking of creating an interface, possibly with profiles you can load / save, and a wizard to set up such a profile.
possibly a commandline version with all optinos but a streamlined interface with these defaults; i'm not planning to add every option as a checkbox ;-).
Whether or not these things will materialize will depend on my limited resources (in time) and how excited you guys are about it ;)

Righty a long awaited update to Folder-RSS :)
changes for version 0.9
* repacked with the latest autohotkey - no more false positives from certain virus scanners
* support for Mouser's DcUpdater (let me know if this works well for you - folder-rss checks for updates on start, will make this an option
* new options thanks to donationcoder member requests:
-only:files|folders = Only include files (-only:files) or folders (-only:folders) (Default is both)
-only:*.ext = Only include *.ext files (eg. change to *.mp3 to include mp3 files only). (default = *.*)
-maxage:`<number`> = Only show results last modified within the last `<number`> days (default=14)
  -maxitems:<number> = Only show up to <number> feeditems (default = 100)
* started work on graphical user interface for next version.

General Software Discussion / Re: Appget - user-run software update program
« Last post by justice on October 17, 2007, 03:02 AM »
I can confirm the updating problems but I think it occurred because appget closes to the system tray. Manually exiting it from there and then updating solved the problem for me.

Can also confirm the version numbering problems. At the moment I am using FileHippo + DcUpdater but clearly I am missing out on a lot of software updates.

Living Room / Re: Interesting...50x Faster Than BitTorrent
« Last post by justice on October 17, 2007, 02:58 AM »
call my sceptic, but if you read the article it proves the claim 50x faster by saying he could start watching the DVD season episode after only 3 minutes, which reads to me like it just allows to 'watch as you download', not that the whole downloading process is 50x faster. Steam does this for games for example.

There's a lot to like about Appget.
It's listing of installed software is exhaustive, the developer is enthousiastic.
The program works well with good information!

However the quality of the information lets down Appget, users don't fill in download urls (which can only be added when software is up to date -- imho this is too late i am not interested in maintaining this info anymore at that point). Getting version info from product version strings proves unreliable.

According to the appget.nl website there's a new version coming sometime this month. It looks promising -- mor work is done on the server.
The problem I see on my system is unfortunately that it looks like appget will never get close to getting my pc up to date. This is because version numbering is not uniform and there are too much different systems around.

Vista versions being higher than xp versions of the same product
alpha / beta / release canditates
secret forum versions
registration only versions
version strings with languages in them
developers following 7.9 with 7.10
comparing 7.10 with 7.1.0

It's a nightmare. That's why DcUpdater works so well it not just looks at versions but also at release dates, with official information from the developer instead of guessing from version strings.

I'm not sure how it works behind the scene, there's definately scope to make this work.
Version system templates, then applying them to products, maybe with some intelligence comparison  / user voting -- could potentially solve it.
Allowing people to fill in download urls anytime.
Importing download info from download managers.

I've used http://Evernote in the past, then http://Onenote but because of this thread I checked http://DirectAccess and it should be possible to use this too.

It can do live-searches for any word in your snippets, invoke them by typing an abbreviation (direct access after all), and organise them by folders. It's easier than pasting. :) It doesn't have source code highlighters although if you need that you can always request it.

I'll copy over the snippets i have and see how it works.
1367
say you've set up all your abbreviations to end in double dots (..) without confirmation, but now you want to change them to get launched by pressing TAB, or shift or any of the other keys Supported by direct access.
That's possible via COMMAND -> CHANGE ABBREVIATION PREFIX/ SUFFIX
1368
I used to use the ` character but now am used to TAB. However what's cool is that you can strip these characters from the abbreviation from your custom system to one of the keys integrated into DA.

General Software Discussion / Re: Zsoft Uninstaller

I'm never sure what happens to the other changes that are made to my pc while an application installed, ie background updates, other registry changes. When you use the procedure above I am always scared that I remove additional information added by programs and services beside the installation program. This was the experience way back when Cleansweep was the major utility in this area and caused numerous problems on the windows 98 pc.

If someone could shed some light on wether this is paranoid or not this would be appreciated. For example any registry monitor will show you the plethora of registry entries being changes just by opening windows explorer.

That said I heard good things about the program.

Thanks a lot! the scanner is flagging a particular version of the executable processor Folder-RSS is using, it is fixed in the newest version of AHK but I never released an updated download. In this case its not a virus. I'll do that in the coming days.

Living Room / Re: Versioning of files
« Last post by justice on October 05, 2007, 04:52 AM »
Regarding filehamster,
It saves the files in its own  "library" which is just a hidden folder at a location you specify. All files are available and the revision time/date are in the filename.
You can attach comments to every save as a pop-up comes up with that choice - or comment as yo go along using the notes plug-in.
I'm not sure where these notes are stored however I noticed a library.info file in the library folder location.
You can bring up a revision window with all the versions of the file and their comments however I've not seen a "export to changelog" option. Have a look at http://Mogware Forums you might find information about that there.
all things considered its the easiest but effective VCS I know of.

It just works in the background and when you save a pop-up in the lower right corner of the screen lets you know filehamster saved it, and if you want to add a comment. It's seemless, and if you don't work as part of a team this will suit you well. (obviously you can replace files sent by a team member but you'll have to add in comments yourself IE it doesn't know who made what changes)

General Software Discussion / registration benefits
« Last post by justice on October 05, 2007, 04:41 AM »
Let me get to the point: do you have any experiences of useful product registration benefits? With many products including software and computer peripherals asking you to 'register now' even though you've purchased it - 'for added benefits, free information and news', I have almost never actually benefited from a registration scheme. The lack of worthwhile benefits actually has changed my opinion of these schemes: when i see one i see them just as a benefit for marketing departments sending out their crap leaflets or mail spam. Surely customers should be treated better with this!

The one benefit I actually had registering a product was with a zanussi washing machine, they keep your purchase records on file in case of a warranty claim. That's actually useful to me. But any software package i now default to 'never register' because I don't trust any benefits come from doing so.

What are your experiences? Should "register now" functionality be removed from all future software in an ideal world or did you get discounts / consumer benefits from registering it? I'd like to see if I am wrong on this.
