Exactly. Besides, Windows XP handles the swapping quite better than Win9x. You need more RAM? OK, Windows will swap some data to the pagefile, and you'll get that extra RAM you need. The only point you'll want to have as much free RAM as possible is after a cold start, because more free RAM -> less programs loaded at startup -> faster startup! :D

I'd say that there's no need to fiddle with anything, including the cache. I tested CachemanXP some months ago, just because I used Cacheman extensively in the past to tweak Windows 98 settings, and I didn't found anything that led me to fork money for it, it was much less useful than the normal Cacheman, yet it was payware. I think I'll pass, thank you :)

I'm confused, you prefer swapping to more memory? With the current price of memory??!! :o

The priority is only useful in certain scenarios, I'll tell you I played with priorities in my old machine, and didn't see any improvement at all. Maybe if you're a heavy multitasker, with lots of demanding applications running in the background (like desktop search) it makes some difference, but I'm a man of a single desktop ;)

EDIT: w00t! 2¹° posts :D

I worked with Burning ROM in the past, and even then I'm not missing any extra functionality from it. More the opposite, I'm glad options like the one from controlling filenames length (Joliet and all that) are gone, they always confused me, stick to the best option, and remove the other ones, nobody wants his/her filenames in 8.3 format. Or maybe I don't need too much control over CD burning, as long as it burns things like it should, it's enough.

The important thing is that it includes Nero Toolkit :D

Duh, nothing interesting. Lack of plugins gets easily fixed by foobar2000 Nero plugin. I only have one burner, I don't see the point in the virus scanner (does it bring one of its own?) and crossfading... for burning? That would destroy the original layout and sound of an album!

"Good" wine that Night Train, it's what Guns n' Roses used to get high, Slash said something about its particular effects, and it was cheap, so it was they quickest way for them to go from sober to drunk without breaking the bank (before "Appetite for Destruction" they were not exactly rich, much more the opposite). Of course, the song is inspired by the wine :)

I wonder if a solution like this would be ideal.

Ads would support the site, and mouser, so he could work on the site full time. The donation system would be applicable for everyone else. Just a quick idea I had this morning.

General Software Discussion / Re: Download Demons...

I generally don't use a download manager. I did use FDM and I remember that McAfee Site Advisor used to scream about it! But I couldn't find anything sneaky about it.

That's because the clever fellas behind the program thought it could be a good idea to open a software site like Download.com, linked to FDM, but lazy as they are, the site does not have any policy of what kind of software you can submit, so the web is flooding with crappy software filled with all kinds of malware. That's why SiteAdvisor blacklists it, because McAfee also analyzes the software it can be downloaded from a site.

The funny thing about Nero 7 Essentials is that it brings along the kitchen sink BUT it does not bundle Nero Image Drive <_<, the guys over at Nero must think Nero Showtime or Nero Photocrap is more important for discs burning that an utility to mount disc images. I suppose the full Nero 7 does have it, but what else does that version have over Essentials if this one installs over 1.5 GB of files if you don't choose the Custom Install?

BTW, if anyone gets Nero 8, you should install only Nero Express. Apparently Nero thought they know better than Microsoft, and they redesigned Nero StartSmart to be almost an entire OS, or that's what it seems from a "review" I read a while ago, complete with RSS feeds and everything.

Hold your horses! How old is your copy of Nero 7? If it's very old, I suggest you get this "update" (it's the full version, actually), and use your code with it. Nero made some software additions during Nero 7 lifecycle, so you could end up getting extra applications with the update, just because they weren't present in the first installation (it happened to me the first time).

scan, if you correct typonese, it does not feel like the IRC channel anymore!

Everything except StartSmart (the central interface) and Nero Express (the former Nero Burning ROM). Take a look at the other components, but in my opinion you're only getting bloat unrelated to disc burning, which do their job worse than dedicated applications.

You can also install Tools, if you feel like scanning your discs for defects, doing speeds tests, and finding out if your burner does good discs or not.

By the way, lunch breaks are supposed to be used to eat, not to transform a thread into the IRC channel...

... if you have eaten your food already, we won't tell your boss ;D

It's a known problem with download managers, seems "ads+download manager" is an unavoidable combination, since the days of GetRight and GoZilla!, and I don't know why...

I use the stock download feature in Opera. I can't get much advantage from multipart download, as my connection is always maxed out by any thing I get, and I don't see anything valuable in download managers that would help downloading in any way. Besides, Opera has mass downloading, so there's even less reasons for having a separate app for that.

I wonder why DAP has a trace cleaner feature...

Uh, I hope they fix those leaks soon. And that slow access for "Preferences", that's one of my pet peeves with Opera along with the "Server has closed the connection" errors in PHP-based pages (like this forum :P).

Yes, like nontroppo says there's a price to pay for being in the bleeding edge. Firefox nightlies are the same.

A room filled with sunlight by day, and by my trusty desktop lamp by night is my tool :). So that means everything is black on white by default.

I'll look into the moon cycles and that, it's one more use for something as inutile as the Moon ;D

I don't care too much about ads, as Vegas says it's ad blocking and... poof!, they're gone. Of course, I don't mind setting up whitelists for those sites I care about :). Besides, it seems I can't fulfill my donation promise by some reason or other :(, so this would fit that hole.

Thinking in the ads between posts proposition, maybe you could do something similar as what Ryan set up in the CyberNet News forum, with ads being displayed for non registered members. Such idea could be extrapolated to donations, like showing ads to non donating members, but of course this could be bad for the site reputation, with people thinking: "Wha, it's one of those 'pay to remove ads' kind of site. No way I'm going into here", I suppose it's a matter of testing it during a period of time.

If this was the IRC channel, tinjaw would end up being kicked for flooding (nah, maybe one of the operators would kick himself out :P). I've got to say that it's the most original form of inflating post count I ever seen ;D

Thanks Darwin!

General Software Discussion / Re: Google knol
« Last post by Lashiec on December 26, 2007, 11:24 AM »
I'm feeling lazy, so I'll just copy what I said in another site.

The focus on the authors makes me think this is more like the "Professional" version of the Wikipedia, and as such it'll probably compete against Citizendium, which prides on peer reviewed content and, of course, against 'real' encyclopedias like Britannica or Encarta (hint, hint )

The revenue sharing option for the authors is another difference, as Wikipedia is essentially for non profit, and practically everyone editing things there is doing it under the anonymity a nick provides.

I think if it succeeds, it will live together with the Wikipedia, but I don't like the consequences some of the possibilities of the new service (and Google's own practices) could represent.
