Ok i found the culprit, but the solution is imperfect.

I have added a new option that tells SC whether you want to restrict to a small margin when capturing non-top (child) windows.
This was the default in previous versions, but is disabled in the new version.

The caveat is this -- if you uncheck this box you will have to ensure that the child dialog is not in front of the parent window -- but is instead outside of it.
Otherwise it will fail to isolate it from the background of the parent window and it will look even worse than before.

Try re-downloading from normal download url and let me know if it works for you.

Perhaps later I can automatically move the window away during capture and move it back afterwards.
13352
Ok i can confirm and reproduce the problem.
Now i'll try to solve it.

I can see the proximal cause is that the background black/white box it's trying to draw behind the child window is not being drawn outside the window borders.

What I don't know is if this is something easy to fix -- an oversight on my part -- or whether it's a more fundamental problem with the bitblitting operation im using to paint the area behind the window.  I shall report.
13353
let me try to reproduce and report.
13354
- SSC updates the thumbnail view when files are created/deleted/renamed in the capture folder, but it doesn't update the thumbnail view if a file is overwritten (eg. save an image to the capture folder and use the name of an existing file to overwrite it).

SC is designed to auto pickup when a file changes.. but perhaps something about the way you are saving it is making it miss the change.  I actually just changed something that might improve this -- can you try with the latest version of Screenshot Captor and let me know if you still see this behavior?
13355
- Feature to count number of unique colours - can be handy when deciding which format to save in.
that would be perfect scenario for an external tool interfaced to SC;  SC has a way to create and share tool files that show up in the Tools menu; Im guessing this is the kind of tool that either already exists or someone would be willing to code in the Coding Snacks area.  Then perhaps you could create and share a SC tool file for it to make it easier for all to use from SC.
13356
- Related to above, I also tried selecting some existing text, and was then hoping to hold the Ctrl key down while dragging to make a copy of selected area, which I could then place over the other text. Is this possible, as I couldn't seem to find how to do it ? If not, can you add this capability.

In general i would advise using a standalone image editor for stuff like this (which you can configure to launch from an SC button and which SC will pick up after changes automatically) , but it is in fact possible from SC directly.  You would select the region, hit Ctrl+C to copy it, then Ctrl+V to paste it as a new object you can resposition and adjust transparency.
13357
Sorry for delayed response, I wonder if we should split this into a few sections.

Let's deal with SpyShelter issue first -- I'm guessing the problem is related to a child window on top of the main window.  If you move the child window off the main window so that its background is the desktop, can you tell me if that fixes the problem?  OOPS i see you wrote: "No change when the window/dialog is moved over the desktop background.", hmm now that is strange.. i will test myself..

Also, if you disable the Window Capturing 1 option to try to capture Aero Glass, what kind of result do you get then?
13358
Is this just a growing pain do you think?

Definitely possible, and it would be understandable.  But it does mean that it might be prudent for people thinking about becoming new SoftLayer customers to wait a bit until things settle down.
13359
I'm seeing tons of complaints from past SoftLayer fans on their forum and on the webhostingtalk.com forum; seems like a general consensus is forming that since the merger with ThePlanet hosting company, SoftLayer is definitely having some issues..

Nice find, I've never heard of PickBrowser.

TIP 3: Using the Item Context Menu

Most of the time when using FARR, all you want to do is launch the first item in the result list, which you can do by simply hitting Enter (or alt+1).

But you should familiarize yourself with the item context menu which offers you additional easy ways to work with specific results.

You can right-click on any result to show it's context menu, but you can also simply hit Ctrl+R to bring up the context menu for the first result.

Screenshot - 6_6_2011 , 11_40_10 AM.png

Once in the item context menu you can:
  • Show the normal windows system context menu for the file (you can show this directly with Ctrl+P)
  • Add a new alias keyword to invoke this item (or a group of items) by choosing "Add to Group Alias" <-- this is the fastest and easiest way to create a new alias or add items to an existing alias!
  • Add the item to the FARR toolbar
  • Remove the item from the list of previously launched items (good for removing nuisance items you launched by mistake)
  • Change the score of this item in future searches or exclude it entirely
  • Open the folder containing the application to browse manually.
  • And many more functions..

Minor update:

v2.95.01 - June 6, 2011
  • [BugFix] When capturing scans, the previous screencapture active window info could be kept in image comments.
  • [MinorFeature] Added Pixelate *outside* region special effect.
  • [Feature] Fixed bug in sorting by date and added new options to sort by either creation date or lastmodification date.
  • [BugFix] Windows 7 (vista?) could give error on startup about inability to create a .redirect file for update checker.

Heads up: now that i'm back into the swing of updates i hope to do another SC update this month and try to improve scrolling capture.

General Software Discussion / Re: -1 for BrowserChooser
« Last post by mouser on June 06, 2011, 11:15 AM »
It's a huge pain to set the default browser..  and because different browsers use different registry settings that have partial overlaps, it's hard to be completely consistent when switching between browsers.

Browsers tend to be pretty good at restoring themselves as the default handler and fixing up links, so one solution if you ever find your links not opening right after experimenting with such a tool is to run the different browsers and tell them to re-establish themselves as the default browsers.  That will usually fix problems.

One of the major changes I made to my browser switcher tool (BrowserTraySwitch) was to have it snapshot the relevant registry keys and then just switch between the saved registry key sets as requested.

BrowserChooser seems like a nice program -- i've always considered adding the features it provides to BrowserTraySwitch but it didn't seem like their was much point given the existence of BrowserChooser..

I agree with 40hz.

TIP 2: Know How to Use Custom Hotkeys

By default, FARR is launched (toggled) with the Pause/Break key found in the upper right of all full-sized keyboards.

Of course it's possible to change this keyboard shortcut, but most people don't know that FARR has a system that allows you to configure multiple keyboard shortcuts that work in different ways.

As the screenshot below shows, you can add multiple hotkeys triggers that invoke FARR but also do additional things.  The two common things you may want to do with a custom keyboard shortcut are to start out with some text in the search box, and to copy the highlighted text under the mouse before invoking FARR.

Screenshot - 6_5_2011 , 5_59_39 AM.png

To see how this works: Select some text with your mouse in any program and then hit Ctrl+Break to invoke the Ctrl+Break hotkey.  FARR will first copy the selected text to the clipboard by simulated a ctrl+C press, and then bring up FARR with text in the search box that says "search CLIPBOARDTEXT" (where CLIPBOARDTEXT is the highlighted text).  This can be extremely useful for conducting quick searches.

Tip: You can't delete the predefined built-in keyboard hotkeys, but if you want to change them just disable (uncheck) the built-in ones and add new ones to overide them.

This has now been implemented in latest version (June 4,2011).

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Bugfix request - font display in menu flyouts
« Last post by mouser on June 05, 2011, 05:35 AM »
This has been fixed in recent version (June 4 2011); as long as you set the custom font color to Black, it should be solved.
13368
v2.04.01 - June 3, 2011
  • [BugFix] Fixed crashing that could occur after printing.
  • [MajorFeature] Added new special flipcap capture mode that captures only a specific number of frames explicitly, without audio.  This can result in much smaller files, faster capturing user interface, and the ability to handle larger resolution captures.
  • [MinorTweaks] Minor tweaks to improve capture user interface.
13369
New release, mostly minor fixes but one nice feature people have been requesting for a while, you can set checkbox in each command to say whether to simply bring an existing copy of the application to the fore if it is already running.

v1.127.01 - June 4, 2011
  • [Feature] For command nodes you can now use the checkbox to say that if the process if found already running, LBC should switch to it rather than launching a new process.
  • [BugFix] Backup option on main root node was not always being saved.
  • [BugFix] Removed Nirsoft Nircmd auto installation, because antivirus companies were giving stupid false positives.
  • [BugFix] If you now set a custom menu font and choose color BLACK for text, it will properly invert the color when highlighting it.
  • [BugFix] The # character in urls was being converted to %23 which was causing them to sometimes not launch properly
  • [BugFix] Changed default arguments of dropped node from %file% to "%file%"
13370
Looks like the option has been in place since october 2008 :)

Just call on the commandline -open "filename" and it will load that file on startup.
13371
Yep, give the server a bit of time to finish doing background stuff..
13372
The Seattle Softlayer datacenter where the DC server is located had an unexpected power loss last night (sat 3am-6am) that took the DC server (and DC member server) offline.

Softlayer experienced a power event which caused the Seattle datacenter to go offline. The UPS's failed to pick up the load and engineers are currently investigating the cause. At this time power has been restored, and we are working on bringing all devices back online into working order.
Best Regards, Eric C., SoftLayer Support

The main DC server/forum is now back online (thanks to DC member Gothic!) and all seems well, and no forum data has been lost.

Note 1: The DC member server is still offline for a bit while we attend to that.
Note 2: We' may take the server briefly offline sometime next week to test and improve our daily backup scripts.

Living Room / Re: Should retailers be held accountable for recommendations?

based on a user suggestion

if it was a *user* suggestion that would be quite different -- wouldn't be fair to hold them responsible for that.
13374
Couple of questions:
Is it just that window that captures oddly?  Does notepad capture with the same problem?
When you capture that dialog, is it in front of any other window? If so, can you move it to so its over desktop background and capture it and see if the result it the same?

Newegg is usually good about these things.  This seems like a clear case where they should wave the 15% restocking fee.
