Living Room / Re: XBOX 360 with Kinect or Wii?
« Last post by mouser on June 19, 2011, 11:23 AM »
What wraith says.

I have used both for exercise (i have a friend who does video game research work and was able to borrow them for long periods), and the xbox with kinect seems to be the superior exercise tool.

The kinect exercise games can be frustrating to use, but it is real -- it really can figure out where your body is.  the wii is much more of a gimmick, pretending to know what you are doing but it's largely an illusion.

There are 3 main exercise games for kinnect currently, EA Sports Active, The Biggest Loser, and Your Shape Fitness Evolved.

EA Sports Active is the one i use the most -- it has a very annoying initial user interface, but it has the most running in it, which i like the best.  It also has a very cool feature that lets you create your own custom workouts which I like.

The biggest loser is good and gets good reviews.  Has more varied activities and tries to be more engagin.

Your Shape Fitness Evolved should be sent to every other kinect developer as a lesson in how to create a user interface for navigating and selection that doesn't make you want to smash something into your tv screen -- i don't know why the rest of the kinect games have such poorly designed user interfaces.

Since you are a coder, you have the extra incentive for the xbox kinect in that you can get the windows sdk for the kinect now should you want to code stuff for it.

Anyway, easy decision for exercise use: xbox360 with kinect.

can you try enabling and disabling the non-promiscuous mode option (Only scan this computer checkbox) and test it in both modes.

and then make sure sure you click the sniff network button and surf the web and look at the statusbar in url snooper to see if its counting packet.

send me your MCF file and let me have a look ([email protected]).

the other thing you can do is do is try some of the options in Tools -> Maintenance Menu and see if they yield useful info.

but first, back up your MCF (not mcp) file (and send it to me).

Screenshot Captor / Re: Disable Auto Save totally
« Last post by mouser on June 18, 2011, 02:23 PM »
Hi Loeffel,

Here is a trick to basically do what you want:

Go to the "File Naming Template" options tab, and change the Defauilt New File Name to something that does not include %datetime%, for example just: "MyLatestScreenshot"

Then "uncheck" the box labeled "Auto sequence new file names to avoid overwriting old files"

Now each new capture will just replace the last file, so you will have only 1 screenshot file ever.

not to dampen your excitement but that counter and like is for the entire site  :)

UrlSnooper / Re: Can expect a fix soon?

im fairly certain i fixed this problem with the latest version (the beta?) -- at least i have had no reports of the new url snooper failing on any hardware that other winpcap software works on.  if i am wrong about this, someone needs to show me an example.

the last such report i had i fixed in the latest beta, on this thread:
https://www.donation....msg235387#msg235387

(note that beta download is no longer valid because the new url snooper version came out after the beta)

so what i need to have is an example of some winpcap software working where url snooper fails (even when url snooper run as admin).  if someone can find me that, i should be able to fix.

Here's a very useful roundup at freewaregenius today:

PDF Virtual printers are a convenient way to create PDF files. These programs can save any kind of printable document as a PDF; all you need to do is to select ‘print’ from your favorite program, then select the virtual PDF printer and get a PDF file.

There are many excellent free virtual printers. We have tested 15 of these and selected 10 of them to evaluate and compare. These (in alphabetic order) are: Bullzip PDF Printer, Doro PDF Writer, PDF Printer (PdfSvg), PDF reDirect, PDF24 Creator, PDFCreator, Perfect PDF 7 Master, Primo PDF, Print2PDF Free and qvPDF.

I'd like to be able to choose an otherwise unused key, like scroll lock, to act as a modal switch to turn on the alternate meanings for the cursor. It seems like AHK could allow me to do this, but I'm not sure exactly how to accomplish this.

Your request seems reasonable and indeed a clever idea, and ahk should be able to handle this easily I think.

Ath: There is no need to manipulate the fn key, the idea would be to simply check the ScrollLock state and trigger the alternative keys if it is engaged.  The only tricky part is preventing the original keypress from going through.
13316
very nice idea!

Living Room / Re: Backup Strategy: "The Threes"
« Last post by mouser on June 13, 2011, 10:47 PM »
The main reason RAID is so attractive as a backup solution is that it is 100% automatic after it's set up.

So while it's only going to save you from a hard drive hardware failure, it does that job better than any other solution, instantaneously and with absolutely zero user intervention or maintenance.  No other software backup solution is even close to it in terms of comprehensiveness, minimal resource use, and minimal effort.

So it does have it's place, especially with hard drives so cheap.

Living Room / Re: Backup Strategy: "The Threes"

RAID is a good strategy to protect you against the hardware failure of a drive.  If a hard drive suddenly stops working, RAID offers the best protection to ensure you don't lose any file data.

But hardware failure of a hard drive is only 1 of many ways you might lose data.

Others are:
  • accidental deletion or overwriting of a file
  • virus infection of files
  • realizing you made a change to a file in the recent past that you shouldnt have and wanting to recover older version
  • wanting to compare older versions of a file to figure out when you make some mistake
  • theft of your pc or fire damage to house

RAID cannot help you with any of those.

Thanks for the report -- we have actually begun a process to identify these old version incompatibilities and this helps.  Hopefully it will be sorted out soon.

I thought about posting the problem to the AutoHotkey forum, but I don't know if that would be considered cheating. I'm just so damned hones
t!

i don't know the answer to your question about how to do it, but i can say it wouldn't be cheating to ask this question on the ahk forum.

It is an interactive tool for building sequences of image edits, then saving them as "batch" files to re-apply to subsequent images either

that's a very clever suggestion by JohnFred, definitely worth exploring.

Living Room / Re: Downloadsquad shutting down - Another one bites the dust
« Last post by mouser on June 13, 2011, 12:03 PM »
Something seems obvious to me now, reflecting on this "news."

In this day and age, when site domain recognition and visitor count is *EVERYTHING*, and when transfering management of a domain name is trivial (unlike trying to transfer physical ownership of a store), im not sure we have EVER seen a case where a popular site has simply "shut down".

So I think it behooves us to ask what it means to say "Downloadsquad is shutting down".. It seems almost guaranteed that this means little more than the current ownership/writers are going to stop doing what they are doing, but will be back with different content on the site eventually.

Right?  I mean it's not like downloadsquad was one person's personal project -- i don't see any chance of it really just shutting down.
