Earthcoder,

I'm not sure if it will meet your needs, but there is one freeware asset management program I used often and like. It is called PXServer.

If you are asking which ones I am giving away, look at the first post in this thread. If you are talking about my stash of games I own/play, too many to list. That's for sure.  8) Mostly wargames. Lots and lots of wargames. And a good sized lot of strategy games. Oh, just way too many to list off.

that's a nice collection of games you have there, tinjaw.. i have MoH: Pacific Assault but yet to play.. btw, are you moving somewhere that prompted this whole-sale clearance? :)

I've got plenty more games.  ;) I literately have dozens and dozens. I recently rearranged my apartment to make myself a better office setup and so this stuff is floating to the top.

OldElmerFudd (or anybody for that matter),

Send me a PM with the details of what you want and where you want it shipped to. I will ship it via USPS if you are in the US. If you want it shipped International you will have to tell me how you want it shipped.

OK. So the requirements have changed to copy protection for software that can be used by drunk developers. I think we may have identified a niche market here.  :P  :beerchug: :drinksmiley:

Living Room / Re: Looking for a good Electronics tutorial
« Last post by tinjaw on August 19, 2007, 01:20 PM »
I have never looked for such a website, so I cannot recommend one. However, I learned electronics from the books and kits and Radio Shack. The Forrest Mims books are great and you can get them there. I learned enough from those to know all of the electronics stuff when I go my amateur radio license.

I am cleaning out my office. I have a few pieces of software that I was going to throw away, but I figured I would offer it here first before I trash it. Most of it is outdated (not even eligible for upgrades). I also have a few games where I own the newer version or bought the "gold" version and have the original game. The only cost to you is the cost for me to ship it. In the US, that will most likely be $4, and will be USPS Priority Mail.

I will keep updating this list as I go through my stuff, so keep checking back here if you are interested.

  • ScanSoft Dragon Naturally Speaking 6 (CD, Manual, and Quick Reference Card)
  • IBM ViaVoice for Windows Personal Edition - Release 8 (CD and User's Guide)
  • Neverwinter Nights - Original Version (CDs, Instruction Manual, and Quick Reference Card)
  • Hearts of Iron: 1936-1948 (Box, CD, and Manual)
  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (Box, CD, and Manual)
  • Neocron Online (Box, CD, Manual, Quick Reference) I am pretty sure it comes with some free time.
  • Anarchy Online - Special Edition (Unopened Box) I am pretty sure it comes with some free time.
  • Anarchy Online - The Notum Wars (Unopened Box) I am pretty sure it comes with some free time.
  • Empire Earth (CD and Manual)
  • Norton Ghost 2001 (CD and Manual)

I also have some old Franklin Covey stuff. I have four of the Bite Size Learning Library classes. Each consists of a book, a multi-media tutorial on CD-ROM, and audio CD, and a quick reference guide. There also is a registration key for the online version of the classes, but I suspect they are long gone from the web. This stuff is from about the year 2000. There is also matching software for the Palm PDA, but I don't know if it works with the new Palm OS. If you are new to the Franklin Covey system, this is a lot of great information. I would box it up and ship you the whole enchilada for only the cost of shipping. The classes I have are:
  • Powerful Time Management Skills
  • Creating Success
  • Mastering Information Overload
  • Balancing Your Life

I found an old review of the FC stuff.

I downloaded and installed a trial of WhereIsIt? but I cannot figure out exactly how to get started with it. Help seems geared toward placing individual CDs in an optical
How did you get it to start scanning one of your drives?

I just right-clicked on a catalog, chose Add New Disk Image, and picked the C: drive.

I downloaded and installed Where Is It?. It is scanning one of my drives right now. It looks pretty good from their website. I am hoping it meets my needs. I use Locate32 for day to day file locating on my hard drives, but it isn't meant to do the things that Where Is It does. I am hoping they will compliment each other well.

I am trying to take a look at Where Is It?, but I cannot reach their website. Is it down, or are my problems local?

Developer's Corner / Re: Is Beautiful Code A Succubus
« Last post by tinjaw on August 17, 2007, 07:55 AM »
To me, defining beautiful code is like defining porn; you can't define it but you know it when you see it. Beautiful code is probably easy to read, but it need not be. It will invoke similar feelings to those experienced when admiring the best work of a universally acclaimed virtuoso. It's foundations will be new and innovative, but appear obvious in hindsight. The application of the actual source code will most likely be specific, but the essence of its structure will be universally beneficial. It will be something that needs to be experienced to be truly appreciated.

Ken,

I'm not good with words, so I don't know what to write. I don't know what pain like that feels like, so I can't understand what you must be going through. I know that when I get my back pains every now and then, like I always do, I won't be such a wuss as much as I used to be.  I hope science and smart people can help you. They have always helped me when I have put my trust in them. I wish the best for you.

Your friend,
Chaim

I suggest computing what you really need for a PSU at the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator. I got the 1 year subscription and it has most of the brand name parts so you don't even need to look for the specs yourself. They free version requires you to look stuff up yourself.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by tinjaw on August 07, 2007, 01:36 PM »
I feel ashamed that this thread has gone this far without bringing others into the discussion. The Start Menu was quickly copied by KDE and GNOME. How are they faring? I don't use Apples. What is their equivalent and how is it doing?

I purchased the book Beautiful Code the other day and it sits on my read-when-you-want-to-read-about-code-instead-of-coding-and-not-feel-guilty stack. Jon Udell pointed me to an interesting blog article on rejecting the notion.

Beautiful Code

O’Reilly just published Beautiful Code. I was invited to contribute, but I just could not go along with the premise. I disagree that beauty is a guiding principle of programming. Here is how I responded.

Living Room / A Friend Just Recovered Lost Files With "Recover My Files"
« Last post by tinjaw on August 07, 2007, 09:47 AM »
I just wanted to post that a friend of mine did a quick format of a hard drive and then found out he needed to recover all of the documents that were on that drive. He tried a few programs and ended up purchasing "Recover My Files". He was able to successfully recover almost all of the lost files.

Nuclex Engine Sources Released
Posted by: Nuclex Developmnt Labs at August 1, 2007 2:55:13 PM

Nuclex Development Labs has released the source code of their Nuclex Game Engine to the public, free of any charge. The engine has been developed in-house and was originally intended to be used for the studio's indie games business, but became obsolete when the switch to C#/XNA was made. It is based on modern programming paradigms and stands proof that Boost and Loki are very usable for game development purposes and that usage of smart pointers and a design-first approach do not lead to a bloated or badly performing game.

It is released in the hopes that other developers can learn from its code and maybe use parts of it for their own creations. Bits of interest are a complete graphical GUI system, streaming of data from .rar and .zip archives and template-based generation of optimized RGB pixel format conversion code at compile time.

Further informations and links to download the engine sources can be found here:

Lashiec,

Do I understand you correctly? You want to take an existing windows, of any size, and just center it on a single monitor?
