General Software Discussion / Re: Questions re Windows 7 Starter on a Netbook
« Last post by Josh on December 13, 2009, 10:45 AM »
Almost all the netbooks seem to come with Windows 7 Starter, including the Toshiba NB205, the one I'm most interested in.  I'm most interested in using a netbook for the following, especially when I'm traveling:

I am the owner of a Toshiba NB205-N210 so I can provide you insight into my experiences with Windows 7 on my netbook. I am currently running Windows 7 Pro with aero enabled. I have 2GB of ram and have a fairly snappy system.

1) reading and sending email (I use Mulberry as my main email client, and Gmail for some personal email)

You should not have very many issues in this department. Most software I have found works flawlessly on W7.

3) playing large video files, some downloaded from the web and others converted from DVDs I own.  I currently play most of these files with KMPlayer 2.9.4.1435.  I'd definitely want to be able to continue to play these files--e.g., when I have a long plane ride.  What I've read about Starter is very unclear concerning its capability to play video files.  I don't care at all that it doesn't have Windows Media Center, but I do want to be sure that I can put a player such as KMPlayer on it and play the videos smoothly.

This is a touchy area as most netbooks are fairly low in power. I can play various files but when you get into HD (mkv/h264/x264) files, you will notice significant lag. Flash video lags on my netbook as well (suprise suprise). KMPlayer will throw W7 into basic mode because of the way it handles video although VLC plays video back fine in aero mode.

4) playing CDs and DVDs with an added piece of hardware such as Samsung Super-Writer Master.  I don't plan to take this with me on trips, just use it for adding software or watching DVDs when I'm at home but not at my desktop.

I have not ventured into playing DVDS on my device but I will test it and let you know.

As far as which version of W7 you can run, I would say all of them. I am running Win7 comfortably on my system and it works very well. Enterprise should work without a hitch as it really adds business level functions such as domain join and a few other features. Overall, I feel you will be better suited with any edition OTHER than starter. Starter, from what I have read, limits the number of taskbar based applications you can run and eliminates certain key features which you will probably enjoy in home premium, pro and enterprise editions. I would go with home premium at a minimum.

Hope this helps :)

Exactly! Do not blame UAC for poor application programming. Any modifiable files should be stored in the %appdata% folder of the users profile. Writing to program files is a poor habit spawned by years of Win9X/ME and running as an admin profile in XP/Vista/7/2K

People on forums who feel they need to reply to every single post in every single thread. Or in a similar instance, people who reply to every post in a post they initiate even when their input is not required.

I don't feel the need to post in every thread, but most of the time I will reply to posts if I initiated the thread. I usually ask for advice or assistance, and if someone gives it, I feel I should thank them - whether Josh is annoyed by that or not!!   :P   :P   :P

Jim   ;D

Nope, I am annoyed at the people who feel they must reply to each and every post made in a thread they start, even if other people are having a conversation about something unrelated to the original topic.

Why install more than one AV? That is just asking for problems. I laughed when my security+ instructor told me he used 3 A/Vs on his PC at one time and then later in the class complained about how slow his system was.

I never did understand why at places like Sams Club or BJs wholesale they check your receipt on the way out when you have 45 items in the cart. It is not like they are checking each item against the receipt. COME ON, Really? You have to waste my time?

I am very sorry to hear that. Will he be buried at Arlington? If so, do you know when the funeral is as I would like to attend as I always hate to see a fellow service-member pass.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

The security company Prevx, which recently garnered a great deal of publicity by claiming a Microsoft security patch is the cause of a so-called Black Screen of Death that disables PC, just admitted what much of the world already knew: They were absolutely wrong.

Prevx last week claimed that the November 10 Windows security updates changed Access Control List (ACL) in the Windows Registry, which led to the Black Screen of Death. Microsoft debunked that claim earlier today, and said the patch was not at fault.

Now Prevx has admitted that as well. On a company blog, director of research Jacques Erasmus admits that the Black Screen of Death is in fact caused by malware, not by the Microsoft security patch. He adds, "We apologize to Microsoft for any inconvenience our blog may have caused."

Something tells me that the people at Prevx aren't going to be named a Microsoft MVP any time soon.

Actually, in Win7, it can distinguish between user-initiated actions. You have to remember, however, that certain actions WILL throw a prompt making sure its something you want to do (Launching regedit or certain MMC Snapins).

And the reason it can ask for confirmations is if that application is compromised (which is why no white-lists are made for UAC) and it tries to do something admin level, it will alert you. Remember, this is not designed for the techie, its designed for the home user who launches an application and it provides them a warning in case.

UAC is DESIGNED to give you warnings to potential hazardous applications or programs.

Or just memorize the msc shortcuts :) I simply hit the winkey, type devmgmt.msc and launch device manager :) But I am very keyboard savvy.

Please note: UAC is not DESIGNED to stop malware, much to the dismay of kaspersky and their latest report that states the fact that UAC does not stop malware.

And yes, I always switch control panel to classic view in every windows installation I use.

Am I the only user who is NOT annoyed by UAC? Heck, even my wife uses her vista laptop and has not complained about UAC. She has even said UAC is helpful in that it can help prevent accidental deletion of a file she didn't intend to touch. UAC in Windows 7 is far from intrusive, in my opinion. Vista was overbearing at times with UAC but this was greatly improved in 7. The problem with UAC is that most application developers, even after a few years with Vista, have not realized what is throwing these UAC prompts and have not updated their applications. I have a feeling this will change with Win7, but one can only wonder why it hasn't happened sooner.

Living Room / Divx 7 help requested
« Last post by Josh on November 28, 2009, 06:53 PM »
OK Folks, here is an oddball problem that comes in two parts.

First: I am trying to get the divx 7 pack to install properly on windows 7. When watching the installer details, I see error messages such as "Could not load: XXXX" and it proceeds to list various files. This occurs at various points throughout the installation. Does anyone else experience this?

Second: The new Divx 7 comes with MKV playback support allowing WMP12 to playback and stream mkv files. The oddball part of this is that I can successfully play an mkv file over remote desktop (when remoted into the computer) but not when logged on interactively (locally) to the computer. That is the most bizarre thing I have ever seen. Has anyone else experienced that before?

Ideas? Thoughts? Concerns? Comments? Insatiable quantum quandaries?

I have no need for acronis products any longer, not since Vista anyways. Windows PC backup is more than enough for my purposes (creating an image and performing data backups). I suggest any users of Vista/7 check this out before shelling out money for this product.

Who makes a mixed drink nowadays anyways? The real drinks are straight shots or on the rocks scotch.
