Developer's Corner / Software Copy Protection Questions
« Last post by tinjaw on September 22, 2007, 05:17 PM »
I am currently talking with a company that has a popular comic book and may be working with them on a PC game. I will have to use DRM to protect the art assets, etc. that are used in the game. I am just starting to explore this area as it is something I have yet to require. Any hints and tips from  DCers experienced in this area would be appreciated.

Although I would not put every program on my computer in it, what I would like to try is something that operates like the album cover viewer in iTunes.

I would want to be able to spin through it with my mouse wheel and select the application with a click of the scroll wheel. Does anybody know of something like this for MS Windows? Maybe somebody cloned the Apple desktop interface that does something similar.

Have you thought about Amazon EC2? DC members can donate some $ to use some EC2 cycles. And I will get my 5 computers running as well.

Developer's Corner / Re: What Are My Options To Test On Mac OS X?
« Last post by tinjaw on September 18, 2007, 07:10 PM »
I had no idea Apple made it illegal to run OS X on anything than Apple hardware. Oh well. No Mac games from me.

Developer's Corner / What Are My Options To Test On Mac OS X?
« Last post by tinjaw on September 18, 2007, 03:36 PM »
Torque Game Builder allows me to build my game for OS X. I don't own a Mac or OS X. I would like to find a very low cost way of testing games that I build to be able to sell them to OS X users.

1) Does Apple have a program for developers for me to get a cheap copy of OS X to develop against?
2) Could I run OS X in a virtual machine on VMware Server? If not, what about the latest version of VMware Workstation?
3) Does anybody here have experience doing this sort of thing?
4) Is there a list of hints and tips available for doing this?

My Google search begins.... now

Developer's Corner / Scythe Physics Editor Goes Open Source
« Last post by tinjaw on September 13, 2007, 08:48 AM »

From the project's home page:
[11.09.07] Scythe is going open-source!
Scythe is now an open-source project. Sometime this week it will appear on sourceforge and be available by CVS. I can no longer afford to spend much time on Scythe and am moving onto a game project, so I am handing its future to the community.

[11.09.07] Scythe 1.14 update
Small update. Most notably removes the requirement to save scenes in the root directory, and all features are now free to all users.

Go mouser. Give us an update on your scores. I remember you talking about an ongoing scoring mechanism during the contest.

From the documentation:
Server type:
If you have a SFTP server, change this to SFTP. Please note that SFTP support is still experimental and may be slow or not work at all.

I mean to ask which one one uses regularly in their day-to-day computer usage at their main computer.

Dora the File Explorer ?  :P What episode? The Two Panes?

Darwin,

I am interested in knowing how many people use these file managers. I'd think a poll with the main five, a choice for other, and a choice for I don't use one would be very interesting.

Oops.  :-[  I haven't had my coffee yet and I made a mistake and deleted some photos from about 4 people on the map. So about 4 of you will need to restore your photos. If you cannot do that, let me know and I will remove your pin from the map and you can redo the whole thing. Sorry.

For those who want more information, I didn't realize that photos and members are handled separately. So photos are displayed without member information, whereas members are displayed with the photos. So, I mistakenly thought that some photos where orphans and duplicates because I didn't know they were associated with members. But when I went to the member page, I saw that some members were missing photos. So you may want to be careful about this if you do a Frappr map yourself.

For those of us who cannot (are not willing to) keep up with the plethora of postings on file manager swiss army knives, it sounds like the Big Four are (in no particular order, or course) Directory Opus, XYplorer, TC, and xplorer2. And, I imagine like vi and emacs, pc and apple, and coke and pepsi, it is a matter of taste you choose as they are all relatively equal in power. Am I kinda correct?

I asked my Russian speaking friend to see if he can contact the author to find out if we can get some updates or the source code.

A very well made Phun-Wiph-Physics type game. No directions are given, but you can easily get going. Just use the spacebar and the up and down arrow keys.

Living Room / CoScripter: Control Firefox Through Scripting
« Last post by tinjaw on September 06, 2007, 11:21 AM »
IBM has released some cool technology. This can be very useful for web-based app developers and site administrators among other things.

Simplifying web-based processes.

CoScripter is a system for recording, automating, and sharing processes performed in a web browser such as printing photos online, requesting a vacation hold for postal mail, or checking bank account information. Instructions for processes are recorded and stored in easy-to-read text here on the CoScripter web site, so anyone can make use of them. If you are having trouble with a web-based process, check to see if someone has written a CoScript for it!

I thought I had posted this to the forum, but it looks like it may have just been on IRC. I created a Frappr map for DonationCoder.com. Please add yourself to the map.

Living Room / Not Just Free Games
« Last post by tinjaw on September 06, 2007, 07:40 AM »
Greg Costikyan, CEO and co-founder of Manifesto Games, and this year's recipient of the International Game Developer's Association Maverick Award, has opened a new website, Play This Thing.

Our basic idea is to feature one interesting game a day--to point you to the most interesting, creative, innovative, or just plain weird games out there. About half will be free, and about half games with some kind of free play option that you have to pay for if you want the full game--with, on Tuesdays, a tabletop game (board, roleplaying, or card game). Some of those will be free, too, as a PDF download or the like.

So it's a game review/commentary site, if you will--but since we're pointing to games we think are interesting, you won't often find negative reviews here: the point is to feature the good stuff.

And while your at it, check out Manifesto Games' main site.

We're here to create for games what indie music and film provide: an audience and market for creativity and individual vision, defying the big publishers' mediocrity and hype. Join the indie games revolution today!

First announced at the Game Developers Conference in March 2007, Project Darkstar source code is now available for download and free use under the GPLv2 license.

Project Darkstar is the video game industry's first enterprise grade, high performance, fault tolerant and highly scalable server technology for online, multiplayer games. Project Darkstar has been designed from the ground up to handle almost any kind of online game imaginable.

From card games to full blown MMOGs, Project Darkstar is the perfect technology to get you up and running quickly, allowing you to focus on building your game, not network technologies.

About $20 USD to Spain. You can probably buy it cheaper from a surplus retailer in Spain.
1324
tinjaw, if there's some way of shipping packages outside the USA for those $4, even if they take years to reach their destination, I would gladly relieve you of some games ;)

What country are you in Lashiec?

You dont play bf2 do you?

Yes I do. Both at home for fun and at work for fun... on the clock... and get paid to play it... and others.  :P I love my job.
