I'm surprised they didn't mention ProtonVPN.

What's your intended usage? What kind of "security" are you concerned about? Who do you consider your potential adversaries to be that you need to protect the data from?

just got the lab results and the tumor was noncancerous! So big fricking cheers to us and to many years ahead 🧠✨

Sorry for the silence. I’m okay. Just not as okay as I’d like to be yet.

Weird. I get an error in Vivaldi whenever I preview a post that contains unicode emoji.

So is it just me or does including unicode emoji in a post break the "preview" function of the forums?

Lately I've been "buying in" to Microsoft's ecosystem more and more. And by that I mean instead of opening my browser and doing a search for the forecast, or using Google Maps, I'll just use the included Microsoft Weather or Maps apps. And I've also been more open to trying out (free) apps from the Windows Store, since the UWP platform is a lot better about being able to clean up everything when you uninstall something.

I've even considered importing my contacts, email, and calendar accounts into the respective Microsoft apps, but haven't quite gotten that far yet.

But then something like this happens:

Microsoft Weather Advertises Microsoft News.jpg

I opened the Weather app because it's getting really hot today and I wanted to know what to expect for the rest of the day and week, but I was greeted by an ad for Microsoft News.

This makes me question whether or not I really want to get myself too involved in Microsoft's ecosystem after all. And it also doesn't make any sense to me because Microsoft News comes installed by default on Windows 10. I had to manually uninstall it because I don't want it. They should know this. And yet they're still advertising it to me, trying to get me to install it again?

I guess it's because they're advertising the mobile app for iOS/Android. But still. It's like trying to heat up your food in a microwave, but before the door will open to allow you to put the food in, the microwave says, "Hey! Check out our cool new refrigerators!" (pun intended), and then a permanent button shows up on the microwave which you can press to hear "Hey! Check out our cool new refrigerators!" any time you want.

😒

I found this in the Feedback Hub: Remove get news link on the left side bar.

After this thread was created, I discovered that recent versions of Windows 10 have a hotkey to bring up an emoji selector: Win+. (period) or Win+; (semicolon).

👌😁👍

And you can even press the hotkey and then just start typing a word like "rocket" and it will filter the emoji for you. 👨‍🚀🚀👩‍🚀

NECRO-THREAD ARISE AGAIN!

Machine learning AIs are starting to get better, and can now defeat humans in 5v5 Dota 2 matches!

Our team of five neural networks, OpenAI Five, has started to defeat amateur human teams at Dota 2. While today we play with restrictions, we aim to beat a team of top professionals at The International in August subject only to a limited set of heroes. We may not succeed: Dota 2 is one of the most popular and complex esports games in the world, with creative and motivated professionals who train year-round to earn part of Dota’s annual $40M prize pool (the largest of any esports game).

OpenAI Five plays 180 years worth of games against itself every day, learning via self-play. It trains using a scaled-up version of Proximal Policy Optimization running on 256 GPUs and 128,000 CPU cores — a larger-scale version of the system we built to play the much-simpler solo variant of the game last year. Using a separate LSTM for each hero and no human data, it learns recognizable strategies. This indicates that reinforcement learning can yield long-term planning with large but achievable scale — without fundamental advances, contrary to our own expectations upon starting the project.

A really interesting (and long) read.

Windows 7 ISO @ Microsoft - you need to enter your valid product activation key to verify before download, (Retail only).

My key is from an MSDN subscription that has since lapsed, so I'm out of luck there.

But thanks anyway. It's not too much of a hassle to just download SP1 manually. And I suspect I may never install Windows 7 again in my life, so I figure it's not worth putting any more time and effort into this and further derailing this thread.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

Thanks. But this appears to be just the SP1 update to be installed on top of an existing Windows 7 installation. I guess there isn't any Windows 7 installation media that comes with SP1 included?

What version of screenshot captor do you have?  That's a really old dialog... It's been a treeview for a while now.

It's the help file that's out of date. I see the same screenshots of the settings in the help file that HelmutWe posted above.

I see now what the problem was from the last time I tried it.

I attempted it again last night and it didn't work. Then I tried again, doing something slightly different and got it to work.

It seems my Windows 7 ISO is old and doesn't include SP1. And you can't upgrade your activation if you don't have Windows 7 SP1 or newer.

So I had to track down network drivers (which was an ordeal in and of itself) and install SP1 through Windows Update before upgrading to Windows 10.

Now my device is activated with Windows 10!

Incidentally: Anyone have a link to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 ISO with SP1?

Did it a couple of weeks ago, Win7Pro x64 -> Win10Pro x64 - worked without a problem.

Nice. I thought I tried it earlier this year and it didn't work, but maybe I didn't actually follow through with trying and just gave up when I read that the free upgrade through the Get Windows 10 app had ended.

I got an email today from someone named Gaye Boso (first though was literally, "Gay Bozo? Is this a prank?") with the following content:

Subject: Тiсkеt#224466327: <[email protected]> 25-06-2018 02:05:42 Your secret video here

Hi.

Hopefully you actually don't mind my english language sentence structure, considering that i am from Saudi arabia. I toxified your device with a virus and im in possession of your personal info out of your computer system.

It previously was installed on a mature internet page then you have picked the online video and clicked on it, my application quickly got into your computer.

After that, your webcamera captured you flying solo, in addition i caught a footage that you've seen.

Just after a little while it also picked up all of your device contact info. In case you need me to wipe out your all that i have - transfer me 500 eu in bitcoin it is a crypto. It is my account transfer address - 1Eqp....QuYW [edited to hide full address]

Now you have 28hours. to produce a decision As soon as i will get the transfer i am going to wipe out this footage and every thing thoroughly. Otherwise, you should be sure that this evidence would be submitted to your buddies.

This reminds me of the old "honor system virus" and I can't help but have a similar feeling of amusement plus some bewilderment about this one.

Also amusing was Gmail trying to be helpful with one-click auto-responses: "I accept the terms," "No worries, thanks for the update," and "I'm not interested."

And another interesting detail is it was sent to an email address that, if memory serves me correctly, I created specifically for a parking garage a couple years ago when traveling to Seattle. So it seems there's been a data breach of some sort, or they sold my data. I checked haveibeenpwned.com and it doesn't have any results for the address in question.

Anyway, I thought some of the rest of you here might get a kick out of this ridiculous spam. :D

I came across that video a couple weeks ago and have been watching others now and then from the same channel.

I'm not really into speedrunning games myself, but I have watched a few speedruns and find it interesting to get a crash course on the history of a particular game or exploit like this.

This one was posted in the IRC channel a few days ago:

A woman is mourning her husband at a funeral, and a stranger asks "Would you mind if I said a word?"

"No, go ahead" she replies.

He stands, clears his throat, and says "plethora" and sits back down.

The woman cries and says, "Thank you, that means a lot."
