I'm just about to leave the door on a week-long trip -- but i will try to fix this when i get back -- there is no reason it shouldn't work fine on windows 7.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Feature request: Web clipping, permanent note keeping
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2011, 04:25 PM »
This is a good example of the kind of thing that I think has been referred to above. I'm not sure whether this would be easy to build in to CHS, but it's probably the sort of potentially very significant timesaver that I and other users would appreciate having - e.g., to paste clips directly into (say) a specified PIM, or into a specified documentation or note-taking tool. It looks like it could be a much better version of Info Select's proprietary and failed "lightning-bolt" clipping tool that I have referred to previously in this discussion thread.
It would be really handy - using CHS as the medium for directly or indirectly gathering lots of separate clipped notes into a single document - ie., you could do it directly from CHS whilst staying on the CHS grid view to do it, or indirectly via CHS from the source page/document. In either case you would be avoiding some of the tiresome/tedious clip/paste to-ing and fro-ing that you might otherwise be obliged to engage in to achieve the same thing without this feature.

I think CHS can do what you are asking already.  You have two ways:

First you can set what happens when you double click on a grid item, and tell CHS to send the clip to the last active window when you double click.  That makes it possible to really quickly send a bunch of clips to an application.  So just start your target app, bring up the main CHS window, and start double clicking.
Screenshot - 8_28_2011 , 4_21_25 PM.png

Second, you can use the "send to last active window" button in the memo panel (or choose from the Edit menu):
Screenshot - 8_28_2011 , 4_21_41 PM.png

I should probably add a hotkey too huh?

You can also select a bunch of clips and "merge" them from CHS, with user defined separator, and then paste as one operation.

I believe all the file-naming possibility remains the same? MiniCap hasn't been updated for some time.

Yep, the filenaming capabilities are the same.  Let me see if i can't do a quick update to MiniCap right now, just so the new failure-to-save error reporting is in place.

Would it be worth the effort for you to allow for user-selected wav file option when capture takes place?

That's a good idea, i will add it.

You could also use any other scheduling tool in conjunction with Screenshot Captor's little brother, the commandline MiniCap tool.

Hi everyone.

Just a heads up that I will be mostly away from the internet this week (Aug 29 - Sep 2, 2011), so please excuse any slow replies to posts or emails.  I'm going to visit my family and prove to them that I really do still exist in real life and am not just a virtual simulation.

Hi Nicholas,

You could use Screenshot Captor for this..
On the Pre-Capture options tab you would set the Auto Capture timer rate to: 7200, and the Stop After to 0 (i think! to make it go forever).

And then make sure you have SC configured to stay minimized after capture (Interface Options 1 tab).

Can you try the new beta (same url: https://www.donation...nshotCaptorSetup.exe) and tell me if this performs a little better with regard to arrow text editing speed.

Note: this version also changes the connection points for labeled arrows, as well as memo box transparency method.

General Software Discussion / Re: How can I download or record streaming audio
« Last post by mouser on August 27, 2011, 03:42 PM »
So here is what I did:

I started URL Snooper, set it to show all urls, and then opened the webpage you specified and started the music playing.

URL Snooper shows me that this is a shoutcast stream and gives me the direct url for it: http://stream.telvi.de:8000/antenne_kl
Screenshot - 8_27_2011 , 3_34_49 PM.png

You could probably plug this shoutcast url into any specialized shoutcast recording program (i think there are some) or winamp addon to record shoutcast to record the file.

That is probably easier than what i did, but here is what I did:

I don't have any of those, so I used the trusty Net Transport tool, which is good at this kind of thing and can do scheduled recording, and fed it the shoutcast url.

It records the stream fine, but the recorded file has no file extension so you won't know how to play it:
Screenshot - 8_27_2011 , 3_35_07 PM.png

But from the details in Net Transport, you can see that it is AAC format audio, so i renamed the file to a .aac extension and then i could play it in my media players (i tried the free kmplayer) and it worked fine:

General Software Discussion / Re: Cnet's Download.com and the installer scam
« Last post by mouser on August 26, 2011, 07:31 PM »
Just a quick update --
I emailed the address that Seth suggested earlier today ([email protected]) and asked nicely if they would remove the installer wrapper from my programs,

and just got an email reply saying the installer has been removed from my applications.

And it seems to be true.

So credit where credit is due, bravo to Seth and Cnet for being responsive about this

(and credit to everyone here and elsewhere on the web who has been running around screaming about this -- these things get fixed only when people make a ruckus).

Anyway, color me very pleasantly surprised.

Now let's just hope that they they put a process in place to let authors set this option from their cnet upload.com account and clearly explain the procedure for removing your applications from the installer wrapper, and contact authors to let them know about this.

Renegade, your technical description of what's happening is accurate -- but i think you're talking about a distinction without a difference.  It might protect them in a court of law but it has no relevance in terms of evilness to the user and author.

The point is not whether they are technically modifying your installer or simply running a small stub program to make it appear as if they have done so.

The net effect is that for many/most users, they click download and think they are downloading and running the program installer, and instead then go through the installation procedure which introduces cnet download.com adware.

And the worst part is that the users will assume that this adware is something that the authors have chosen to include as part of the program installer.

And even though I don't make any, I'm not one of those people that views adware as an inherently horrible thing.  The problem is that it has to be up to the author to decide if they want to do this.

A site should not be able to trick naive users into thinking they are downloading and running a program installer written by and vouched for by the developer, which actually is adware/spyware that a 3rd party is serving up.

Note also how this perverts the whole incentive system for a site like CNet in evil ways -- their goal is no longer to help you find information about the program you might be interested in -- their goal is to keep you away from the real program website where you might god forbid be able to download a clean version of the installer.

A key evilness here is that many/most users will likely assume that THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE INSTALLER that they should even bother to look for.  This is critically important -- most users may have not the slightest idea that there is somewhere else a CLEAN installer provided by the author.  This is something completely new in the world of legitimate freeware/shareware, where a link to download a program has always been to the original unmodified files.  The only sites that have ever tried to make people think they were downloading one program while serving up modified or re-packaged versions are malware sites.

The best solution would be developer opt-in, with revenue sharing for those that opt-in, and a clear link to program homepage.

But as far as I'm concerned the only real bottom line thing that absolutely *must* be remedied as soon as possible is providing a cost-free way for developers to opt out of this installer wrapper.  Until that happens I think all of us are going to keep screaming bloody murder.

What i'd love to see is a good video of a family learning to play CodyCards for the first time.

I will personally mail a deck of cody cards to any family with kids who promises it record and post a full video showing them learning how to play cody cards for the first time.
