2009 was great, 2010 is going to be even better because I am deployed for 5 months! YES! I love the army.

HOOAH!

I am in agreement with others. I do my recommending of DC by posting, when appropriate, to various forums so I do not come across as a spammer or give DC that reputation. That said, I have introduced several members to the site who I know utilize its software and have donated. I feel this is probably the best we can do for DC is to spread the word as appropriate.

General Software Discussion / Re: copy itunes to another computer- free program needed
« Last post by Josh on December 29, 2009, 07:21 AM »
It only needs to be done if you have media that is DRM protected. Most of the times this comes into play with Video files as iTunes has been DRM-Free for audio for a while now. For the transfer, you simply need to de-authorize your existing system (You are allowed 5 aurhorized systems).

Windows copy will work and has worked for me in the past. Simply copy your folder over to the new system and point itunes towards it. Another option is to copy the music directly from your ipod to a music folder of your choice, set that folder as your library preference, and then check the option to "allow itunes to organize my media". This will rename the files from the strings of random characters to organized folders based on the tags.

General Software Discussion / Apple "blocking" VLC Media Player
« Last post by Josh on December 25, 2009, 06:49 PM »
Apple’s always had a reputation as a tight-lipped company, but now it’s under fire for being a bully as well. A sensationalistic story in Gizmodo this week painted an alarming picture of Apple’s Worldwide Loyalty Team and its ruthless tactics for hunting down the sources of internal leaks. And now an upstart open-source developer claims that Apple is actively trying to block its widely used multimedia playback program, VLC.

For the past month or so, I’ve been alternating between Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard, as part of an experiment I first wrote about in September (see Can a Windows geek learn to love Snow Leopard?). Last week I used Snow Leopard full time, and one of the issues I ran into repeatedly was one I cited in that post last September. iTunes on the Mac won’t play back much of the music in my large media collection, because it doesn’t support the WMA or FLAC formats, and the alternatives are few and far between:

That is exactly what I experience and it often times led to a failed download. I worked with eset to resolve the issue but never could do it. This kinda sucks too as I have two licenses for nod32 but only one in use :(

I can say from first hand experience that running nod32 on a netbook is not a good idea. It doesn't slow things down during normal operations but any browser with a download manager will often times fail due to nod32s scanning system. I spent 2 months going back and forth with eset via email and did not resolve that issue.

General Software Discussion / Re: Alternatives to Daemon Tools?
« Last post by Josh on December 21, 2009, 04:49 PM »
Virtual Clone Drive is a program I can recommend for someone not looking to shell out cash. For the commercial aspect, however, daemon tools simply cannot be beat in terms of ease of use and feature support.

If that is the case then it should not be the default rendering method as I do not touch any of those settings.

On this note, does anyone know of a media center replacement that supports various file formats and is configurable?

One would think that but again, read the forums, that does not happen. I have tried the read-only attribute setting but the files still miraculously disappear.

Yeah, that is the same one I came across :( It says to set permissions, etc but it still does not work as I would intend.

Living Room / Windows media center - Disable delete file option?
« Last post by Josh on December 15, 2009, 06:22 PM »
I am messing with windows media center on W7 and like it, actually want to use it on my 46 inch tv, but my only issue is the "Delete" option which appears after viewing a file. I want to know if anyone knows of a way to delete this completely from the interface so that my daughter can watch files without fear of deleting them? Thoughts?

This is just annoying. I realize many users want windows to behave this way, myself included, but my wife is nagging me to go BACK TO VISTA to get this functionality back :-/

Where is he now?

I personally have no issues with it but my wife, on the other hand, does :-/ And as any married man knows, when your wife is not happy, you aren't happy either.

Living Room / Win7 Bug - New windows/notifications do not get focus
« Last post by Josh on December 13, 2009, 03:46 PM »
I recently upgraded my wife to Windows 7 Pro x64 and have had nothing but good things to say about the switch. Her system is the last in our house to move to Win7 and the first in my home to go x64.

The only issue I am having currently is that new windows popping up, I.E. clicking a folder on the desktop, do not open with focus at times. They appear behind other windows.

Has anyone encountered this and know of a workaround?

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Jungledisk Cost Calculator
« Last post by Josh on December 13, 2009, 12:55 PM »
That looks awesome! Just what I was looking for. As we spoke about on IRC, could we add a way to store/change values for each of the calculations in case amazon changes their pricing structure?

Also, is the MB down/uploaded thing actually supposed to be GB?

Thanks again!

Enter in a total value of "MB Uploaded", "MB Downloaded", "Number of PUT requests", "Number of GET Requests" and "Total data stored" and then calculate the monthly bill.

And yes, I realize this is fairly simple but I do not have the time to finagle a spreadsheet or data application at the current time due to my upcoming deployment at the end of the month :(
