Developer's Corner / Re: Article Convinces Me To Move To vi(m)
« Last post by Lashiec on January 08, 2008, 06:46 PM »
I prefer pico as well, if it's installed *and* if they let us use it. For example, for multithreading programming in C is the thing they recommend us to use, as we access the Debian server via PuTTY, that means no graphical interface, nor decent text editor... but they force us to use Vi for Unix shell programming >_< (curiously, I remember it harder to use). Still, both drive me nuts when I hit the Numpad...

So, nontroppo, KHTML/WebKit based browsers suffer from the same problem as Opera?

Use Opera, it does not have that problem ;D
1279
My view is that the problem with Opera is that it does not handle too well non-standard websites. As Firefox (and supposedly IE), Opera has two rendering modes: Strict and Quirks, both self-explanatory. During the development of Firefox, the developers ensured Gecko could handle non-standards compliant websites as good as Internet Explorer, which as you see paid off, because Firefox compatibility for those sites is better than Opera (not perfect, though). It does not help there are developers blocking Opera because it does not handle their websites (not always true).

For what I read, Opera 9.5 handles AJAX sites better than Opera 9.2, doesn't it? I'm sure nontroppo will tell you more about it.

*cough* Those plugins were already installed in your computer, the installation routines of Firefox simply detected them.

No, it was pertaining the NSFW thing, just to know where do we draw the line. It was one of my quick ideas, this time part serious, part joke, as I know more or less who the underage members here are, and I'm sure they would draw the line significantly higher than we'd expect, after all the youngest ones are only 1 year away to be legally able to drive a car (in the USA, that is).

The four folders set up by a Firefox installation are:

  • %programfiles%\Mozilla Firefox (binaries and other files)
  • %userprofile%\<insert your language equivalent for "Local Settings">\<insert your language equivalent for "Application Data">\Mozilla (update logs and cache)
  • %appdata%\Mozilla (extensions, bookmarks, cookies, etc.)
  • %appdata%\Talkback (if you installed it)

Input all those strings with the '%' like that, those are environment variables.

Yeah, that's something we haven't decided on yet, although it was briefly discussed in the monster thread. Where do we draw the line? If it was my call, I would not draw a line at all, so...

Should we let the underage members decide?

You're going to hate me... more bugs! ;D (or apparent bugs at least).

First, the problem with the pictures in the folders is fixed. But I noticed I weird thing that is I can move along the grid using the right mouse button. Is that normal?

And I see that if I limit the chart to the Top 10 entries, it defaults to 4 and remains like that if I select some field with not enough information to fill the rest of the bars. Again, is this the expected behavior?

Linked upon f0dder's request

I wonder if Seagate et al. are going to have SSD drives in their lineup. So far, I didn't saw anything out of them... apart from Samsung, but as Renegade will know, is there something Samsung is not manufacturing?

First you recommended two, now three? Get your act together, already! ;D

I'd recommend the second drive to be external, if you don't want to play around with what mouser suggest. And, if you can, get a motherboard with e-SATA support, and a matching drive for the connection.

As always, my suggestions reinvent the wheel ;D

But, the problem as I said, it's that everyone would use different tags, I believe this could create a problem in the long term... let me see it in your forum :)

EDIT: OK, just as I expected it to be. It's pretty simple, working like most tagging systems used out there, but it works pretty good. Zero-learning curve for those wishing to use it, and it does not get in the way for those who didn't drink the kool-aid ;). Apart from the problem I pinpointed, I'd say we could use this.

Buy a PDA and call it a day ;D

I use Rainlendar to keep up with things when I'm on the computer. When I'm out of it, I don't use nothing, it's not that I have so many things to do, and my memory is pretty good.

Or use any software capable of synchronizing itself with Google Calendar or similar, or use a web service, like that one or Remember The Milk in first place.

A good addition for people that don't want to take more than steps than necessary when posting in the forum would be scanning words in the message in search for particular ones defined in another list, like say, if your post contains the words "pr0n" and "game", then the system would compare the words against the list, and say "look, "pr0n" corresponds to NSFW, and "game" belongs under fun (or whatever), so I'll tag the post with NSFW and fun". I don't know if such kind of thing is feasible from a technical standpoint, if it will kill the server (Wordzilla is an expert with this :P), etc.

Of course, there's the possibility that the system does not find any particular word, so the post will go untagged.

I don't know what Wordzilla has in mind for the system, but I suppose we could have a list of predefined tags for people to choose from, as generic as possible. You'd have to select from a list that appears after you wrote and submitted your post, you highlight all the tags you like for the post, and after another submittal, the post is up on the forum.

Personally, I like a free system, in where you could input as many tags as you like, but it could end up turning into a hell of a system, with people using different tags for the same concepts, thus creating a folksonomy problem. One upside of this method is that we could have a single field after the "Title" field (when you're writing your reply/starting the thread), and use tag after another using a separator. The first system could also be implemented in the page where you write the post, but it's not as cleaner in my opinion, unless we use a little number of predefined tags.

I wonder if both systems could be used together, using a system like the one the Delicious extension for Firefox employs, suggesting tags based on other tags you already created (in this case, predefined tags in the forum).

I hope all this blabbering makes sense...

But, weren't we going for a complete tag system? What you're proposing is only restricted to NSFW-kind of posts

No, no, pictures are free standing on each dir, the files are not tagged with them. And there's no single MP4 file in this case, just MP3, FLAC and Vorbis.
