Don't know how any of these stack up to Waterfox, especially because it's optimized for Windows, but the Swiftfox and Swiftweasel builds are optimized for different CPUs.

Yep. I've heard nightmare stories about transactions with Paypal, for example.
I'd get clear correspondence with the administrators about how transactions are handled, what to do if somebody reports job not done/transaction pulled, etc.
Seems that doing business this way, you're acting as an independent contractor, without some of the legal benefits.

Here's another one, this time aimed at babysitters, tutors, in-home caregivers and pet sitters:

Care.com
http://www.care.com
caredotcom.jpg

Sitters & nannies to make the whole family smile.

How Care.com Works:

1- Post a job for free
2- Contact top candidates
3- Access their background checks and references
4- Hire the right fit for you

I've seen a bunch of ads for babysitters and pet sitters lately through Care.com, so I think it's catching on.

UPDATE:
TaskRabbit is now live in Seattle, and I've signed up.  :D

Thanks edvard, rover, 40hz, rssaphire for help.
No problem, always glad to help
...
Anyway, I listen to radiosure trance channels and often record the sets. Is there any radiosure alternative or similar software for linux?
Like 40Hz said, there are tons, but if you want to record what you're listening to, and you know the address of your favorite streams, check these out:
http://lifehacker.co...pper-and-streamtuner
http://www.mplayerhq...ML/en/streaming.html

I've used streamripper on Windows before, and they are right, some overlap happens.
Shouldn't be a huge deal with long DJ sets though...
Don't know about mplayer, never used it.
Some people seem to think it's quite awesome, though.

I'm talking about videos where the preview looks like some girl about to take her top off or something, but it's actually a blurry skateboard video shot on iPhone.
Since it's only one frame, you'll never see it, but it's at the right spot for the thumbnail.
1283
I'm not sure why the thumbnail/preview image thingy shows a picture of a woman
It's a common embed trick; youtube pulls certain frames for the preview, and if you know which one it's going to be, replace that frame with something more interesting or risqué.
Works real well on adolescent boys. ;)

Aw smokes, not another emacs vs. vi thread :nono2:
Just for the record...
I use Nano! :harhar:

Congrats on coming over to the dark side, mahesh, I and others here are at your service should you need it.
On that note...

Gnome-Do is, I think, the closest to what FARR does, and Docky is it's launchbar cousin.
Keep in mind it is written in Mono, which some find unappealing, but that also means If you're familiar with C#/.NET, then you'll probably find it easier to tweak/extend/bugfix.
KRunner is the KDE counterpart.
Launchy, Synapse, and Kupfer are alternatives.

There really isn't an alternative to URL Snooper, aside from the online video download services.
Maybe there's a Firefox extension that does something similar?

AutoHotKey is hard to beat, but there are quite a few powerful scripting languages readily available in most Linux distros, in fact perhaps too many.
(G)Awk+sed, Perl, and Lex/Yacc + Flex/Bison are all classics that deserve a look for their powerful regular-expression integration.
Python you already know, Ruby, Lua, Tcl/Tk, are some higher-level ones you might get familiar with, though they all have their quirks and advantages.
PyGTK would be the alternative to PySide, though I'll admit Qt takes the prize for cross-compatibility.
Glade makes for a good alternative to QtCreator as well.

If you just need to pass a few infos to your shell scripts via simple dialog boxes, Zenity or it's fork Yad will do quite nicely.

I'm in the process of writing up all the stuff I know, mostly 'classic' Seattle things to do, with my own spin on things.
A few questions...
Will you be coming alone, or with a companion?
How long will you be staying?
When is your trip planned (soon, spring, summer)?

Looking up Firewire, it looks like the technology is expensive, both to manufacture and to license.
It costs 25 cents per device manufactured payable to the MPEG LA group, and the hardware itself costs $1-$2 per connector  :o .
No idea if that's physical costs or if it includes licensing; either way, it's a barrier to widespread adoption, and Apple gets a free ride because it was their idea, and so probably own or control many of the patents.

It's faster and more stable than USB2.0, so that's probably why it's still being used as an interface, as well as the fact that a lot of multimedia stuff is still being done on Macs.
Just a fact, no bias there...

USB3.0 is just now being finalized and supported, with Intel dragging their feet implementing it (supposedly in favor of the Thunderbolt interface) so it may be a while before we start seeing that.
See the last paragraph of USB_3.0#Availabilityw (kinda depressing, actually...).
When it DOES get implemented, USB3.0 is essentially a PCI-e interface over USB wires, so speed should be comparable and then the only deciding factor will be portability.

Oof! I forgot how expensive RME stuff can get  :o but I do agree with German engineering.

More Firewire options:
Presonus Firebox - http://www.presonus....ail.aspx?productid=4
Edirol FA-66 - http://www.roland.com/products/en/FA-66/

Can't find the Maya44e ANYWHERE.
It's either sold out or unavailable, even on ebay.
That must mean it's good  :tellme:

(ah...it's my topic, so i don't mind)
Just thinking about others that might be looking for the same info, but then again, that's what the search function is for, right?

OK, so it sounds like you have a use for multi-track enough that two tracks are a hindrance, but you don't need high-end stuff, and latency is the chief consideration.
In that case then, I'd stay away from MOTU anyways, mostly because it would be overkill for what you're trying to do (although I agree nice gear is nice gear no matter what you're doing).

I totally agree, latency is the #1 concern in any audio setup, and I've never had gear good enough to go below about 5-8msecs (theoretically possible), which I hear is just below the threshold of audibility for most people.
http://kb2.adobe.com...ply_to_latency_times

Which brings us back to USB.
From what I've been able to gather, USB suffers more from jitter than straight latency, that is, varying latencies within one stream.
USB audio has always used the isochronous data transfer type,  (audio stream, no error-checking, no handshaking) which works out OK in ideal situations, but curiously, USB MIDI uses the bulk transfer type, which means it's just data; it gets through when it's asked for.
Not awful if your overall latency is good because you've got solid ASIO drivers, but bad when your computer needs to hit the hard drive for something and your MIDI request gets bumped to the back of the line.
That said, I've heard that RME's USB stuff works well, check them out:
http://www.rme-audio...verview_firewire.php

If you're still set on external, FireWire is probably your best choice, especially for MIDI, although most FW devices include a little extra buffering to smooth playback, which can increase latency a bit.
Along with RME's FireWire options, Echo's Audiofire line should do you good there.
http://www.echoaudio...interfaces_index.php

If you're not absolutely sold on external stuff, then yes, PCI-e wins hands down over anything else; that is it SHOULD, but hardly anybody is making consumer-level PCI-e soundgear yet (oh, but it's going to be FUN when they do...), and I could only find two PCI-express product lines that had a MIDI interface.
http://www.rme-audio..._express_list#intern
http://www.esi-audio...om/products/maya44e/
^replaced by the Maya44Xte, which doesn't have a midi interface

Haven't checked on prices yet for those, but I imagine they ain't cheap.

Whew, haven't done that much research in a long while...  :tellme:

Just to clarify, are you looking for a multi-track solution for home recording, or just looking for something better than on-board sound?
This topic has gone far enough off that it might warrant a new thread.

The reason M-Audio hasn't updated is that the 2496 has been good enough or better than much of what has been out there since they came out.
Everybody else has finally caught up, as you can find 24-bit/96kHz cards just about anywhere for a good price, although M-Audio are still THE solution for decent-quality affordable home recording.
Personally, I have been drooling for a 2496 for YEARS (now the 192... sigh), sorry to hear yours is going south.

If you just want to listen to music, Creative has been leading that pack for many years, and they've evolved WAY beyond being just a gamer's soundcard, what with their THX-enabled home-theater grade X-Fi series, among others.
I haven't personally checked out their USB offerings, but I do know that USB audio has advanced quite a bit since the early days, and you can get the X-Fi Go! for about 30-40 dollars from Amazon, or spend up to 50 or so and get the X-Fi surround that's about the same size as a small external HD.
Check the product comparison chart here:
http://www.amazon.co...SB1095/dp/B0044DEDCA

I've been told to avoid Behringer.

I have no idea what anybody else is doing, but I'm sure Sony and Phillips have something...

I was about to post a bunch of my favorite puns; I had ten of them... real zingers, too.
Reading through them, I tried to keep only the best, and ones nobody had heard before.
In the end, I had weeded out pretty much all of them.
So, did any make the cut?

No pun in ten did.
1294
In the final analysis, if you don't like windows or how it operates.... don't buy it.
It is amazing how many problems would be solved if people followed this philosophy.

I've been saying as much all along, but this is a VERY different beast we're now talking about.
This is hardware.

"So what? Apple's done that for years", you might say.
This is diffferent.
Apple has their own stuff, and a niche market.
This is Microsoft.
That means everything else.
Do you not get it yet?

EVERYTHING ELSE.

Please understand this, I don't want to get angry.
.. yet.

I don't know - when I was a kid we used to have a dynamo next to the wheel and that meant that my pedalling powered my front and back lights. A quick search seems to show that this can easily produce 12v (that's the cheap standard ones, I bet more is possible) but for a LED style strip it might need much stabler power supply (dynamo output probably can be stabilised in some way by putting some kind of rechargeable battery or capacitor in the way)

Dynamo -> rectifier (to make somewhat smooth DC voltage) -> ~18v rechargeable battery pack (with some sort of protection from over-charging) -> 12v voltage regulator to keep it smooth until the battery drains.

... or something like that.

For a DIY approach, more info >Here< though the 6v stated could be easily tweaked for different voltages.

If you have the domain and it's only for email, why not host it yourself?
Don't do this. No, wait, scratch that - don't even consider doing that. There's simply too many headaches involved.
...
Really, the money spent on email hosting is well spent.

Well, I kinda figgered, but thought the question was at least worth asking.

One of the places I worked for had our email running a spare box in a friend of the owners' basement.  :o
I think we had email go down 3 times in 4 years, but when it did, it was a hassle.
He was apparently a semi-retired Sun Microsystems alumni, and ran a hosting service.
At least twice, I proved myself more knowledgeable, but he never took my advice and simply persuaded the owners to go with another service after a while.

Who knew that a stock Red Hat Server install doesn't allow SpamAssassin to modify X-Spam-Status headers?

I'm liking Spicebird (it's been mentioned on DC a few times).
Based on Mozilla code, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi about it that I like very much, where I disliked Thunderbird for the same (read: nebulous) reasons.
Handles multiple accounts pretty well, and setup is 5-year-old-level easy.

That said, there are a few nits about it, like not being able to use T-bird extensions, that would probably not please some people.

YMMV, $0.02, etc...
