Ok I think i figured it out, you are using the highlighting box object.  And I can reproduce the bug.  It has something to do with when the highlighting object is flattened to the image, it looks like its undergoing an antialiasing operation or something that is causing the issue.  I'm on it.

Can you clarify what you mean when you say you apply a border? what exactly are you doing?

Like most things in life there are shades of gray in all of these things and it's hard to come up with labels that aren't a bit fuzzy.. Corporations do charity work.. Charities sell things to make money, etc.

With open source becoming a money-making business for many companies these days.. things are getting messy and confusing.

I think part of the answer to what you are is all about your priorities.. Is maximizing profit your primary goal?  Or is it something else?

From my standpoint, my long term and unrealistic hope was and still is a world where individuals (writers, programmers, musicians, etc.) can make enough money to live off of from voluntary contributions from end users -- and where full access to content is available to people regardless of their financial status.

To me that is the heart of what i'm interested in, and there is no logical reason why it shouldn't work -- only cultural obstacles.

For DC this has meant having to straddle an often uncomfortable position of spending a lot of time talking about raising money (hell it's right in the name of the site) while not letting money corrupt the spirit of the site and play anything but a minor role in what we do.

I know I speak for many coders when I say that I write code because I love writing code and love when users enjoy the programs I write.  Money is not the end goal here -- it's the necessary evil needed to pay bills so that we can continue coding.

The traditional way to handle all this is so much cleaner: Separate the things you do in life for money from the things you do in life as a hobby, and don't try to combine the two.  Most of open source seems to fall under this kind of model.  People have their "real" jobs that pay the bills, and then they can spend their spare time releasing free and open source software, without having to worry about raising any income from it.  That road seems logical and less complicated.

But I still think there should be a way to get direct funding from users of the stuff you create, while still being able to make it available for free.  And I think there are unique non-financial benefits that come out of such a relationship with the community.  And that relationship may be the most important and rewarding aspect of the whole experience -- potentially deeper and more fulfilling than what comes out of simply giving away stuff that you create as a hobby.  At least that's been my experience here on DC -- where the experience I've had with everyone here has been so much more than i ever imagined, and is the most important thing to me.

bizzarre.

let's try to narrow things down a bit.  exit program and restart it.

(stop as soon as you see any error when performing steps below):

give it a second or two to start up -- does it show balloon messages about starting up and being ready?

no errors yet?

ok now right-click on the icon and choose "show main window"

does the main window show ok? and no errors yet?

if so, go to menu View->Options and then "Backup/Maintenance" tab, and click the "Now" button located at top middle.

any errors yet?

I suspect only the first error is of any real import -- the rest *probably* just reflect the cascade of problems caused by the first.

Ok guys so see if this fixes the ridiculous error about "Modifactionate":
https://www.donation...elpAndSpellSetup.exe

Assuming yes, let's resume the hunt for the remaining errors -- let me know what other errors you get now with this version.

I apologize for the frustration and appreciate your help tracking these bugs down and exterminating them.

Mark, are you also using Microsoft Security Essentials?

On Windows 7 the database will under the directory:
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell

Ok i've found the bug with the virtual image clip folder -- my stupid mistake - fixing now.

But i don't think that should have any bearing on any other errors.. frustrating..

does the error really say "Modifactionate"?

when you ran chs for the first time, are the clip folders all empty?  i'm trying to understand if it really did reset your files or if it left over old data we didn't delete somehow.

Hi Steve,

Ok so let's try to start with a clean slate.  Don't worry about registry entries, but let's delete the files.

So delete the contents of c:\program Files X86\ClipboardHelpAndSpell
and C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell

if you don't find that latter directory, let me know -- it should be something like that.

If you have old database of clips you need to preserve, back up those directories first.

Ok so after removing those, install the most recent stable version of Clipboard Help+Spell:
https://www.donation...elpAndSpellSetup.exe

(or the more recent alpha release: https://www.donation...elpAndSpellSetup.exe)

---

Then let's see if it could be related to microsoft security essentials, so either disable that temporarily, OR
add the following to the list of folders it should exclude from scanning:
C:\Program Files X86\ClipboardHelpAndSpell
and C:\Users\Steve\Documents\DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell

And then start CHS, and let me know if you get any errors.

If not, then you can try turning Microsoft Security Essentials back on and see if the errors come back.

Let me know. (you can also email me at [email protected]).

Links should stay within the internal browser.. can you check if you open the same page in a regular web browser, and you click on a link, does it open a new browser window or tab?  If so that might explain it, and yes i might be able to have the internal farr browser intercept and cancel the open-in-new-window behavior.

I'm still looking for a nice meaty paper talking about the why of Dart and how it compares to js.  The language spec doesn't help much and the online "articles" are not quite substantial enough.

Hi Sphinx,

Boy it's been a long time since anyone asked about this tool.

Just had a glance at the old code and i can't see anything in there that makes me believe that it actually does implement this feature of choosing one randomly if you separate with ;  it sounds to be like it was a feature i never got around to adding..

Is this something you really have a use for? It wouldn't be hard to add, but I'm wondering if we might ask dc member Skwire to recode it using his awesome skills, and make it a little easier to use.  Since he writes this stuff in his sleep.

Clipboard Help+Spell / CHS: Share your custom modification scripts here
« Last post by mouser on October 10, 2011, 08:55 PM »
Building off of the screencast video here, and a recent discussion on using scripts to transform text here, i thought maybe it would make sense to have a thread where people might share their Clipboard Help+Spell scripts and executables for transforming text.

NOTE: You currently need to download the ALPHA RELEASE of CHS 2.09.01 to use these tools.

I'm going to start with this sample perl script that does nothing but reverse the order of characters on each line of text.  This is not useful in and of itself, but it does serve as a skeleton for those who might want to write perl scripts for Clipboard Help+Spell.  This sample script file is included with the new version of CHS (v2.09.01) in the tools folder.  Note that you need to have perl installed and configured on your pc to use perl .pl scripts directly from Clipboard Help+Spell:
Code: Perl [Select]
  1. # check and get commandline args
  2. ($#ARGV >=1) || die "ERROR: first two arguments should be input path and output path (place each one in double quotes)\n";
  3. $infilepath=$ARGV[0];
  4. $outfilepath=$ARGV[1];
  5.
  6. # open files
  7. open(IN,$infilepath) || die "cannot open input file";
  8. open(OUT,">".$outfilepath) || die "cannot open output file";
  9.
  10. # write out modified text
  11. while(<IN>)
  12.         {
  13.         # reverse the line
  14.         $outline = reverse($_);
  15.         # now write it out
  16.         print OUT $outline;
  17.         }
  18.
  19. # close files
  20. close(IN);
  21. close(OUT);

Next up is a link where you can download the C++ source code for a C++ tool that does a similar thing -- takes input and output file paths on commandline and performs a text transformation:
https://www.donation...s/chs_sampletool.zip

This was built using visual studio 2010, but it's plain ordinary c++ that can be compiled with any c++ compiler.

So, anyone got any to share?

Find And Run Robot / Re: [FEATURE REQUEST] Feature Lockdown
« Last post by mouser on October 10, 2011, 05:40 PM »
Send me an email ([email protected]) - I'm very interested in having FARR make its corporate debut and would be quite willing to make these kinds of changes to have it fit in.

In addition to locking down some features -- it would be easy to make a custom installer (or portable version) that included custom aliases that were shared across the company as well as eliminating those you didn't want.

In addition to disabling the update check -- another option would be to simply change the update check location which is easy enough, so that it checked your own servers for your own custom updates, etc.

As promised, here is a video screencast demo talking about how to use and configure custom modification presets that invoke external scripts/tools:

I've uploaded a new version that will also work with tools that write out the changes to the input file.

You can test this by downloading new version and then setting the tool to: notepad.exe

But if you do, make sure you change the argument string to just "%infile%" (instead of "%infile%" "%outfile%").
