Very minor bugfix update:

v2.103.01 - Nov 13, 2011
  • [BugFix] Fixed bug where thumbnail panel would not always update after new screenshot.

Next on my SC todo list is to finish the scrolling window capture recode.

Minor update, but this may solve some rare random crashing for people, and should improve performance of dupe checking significantly, which is important since dupe checking option is very useful:

v2.11.01 - November 13, 2011
  • [Feature] Revamped hash/index based dupe checking; should be faster in checking duplicates.
  • [BugFix] Fixed an application crash that could occur when dupe checking was enabled on some applications like Open Office calc -- perhaps related to large clips.
  • [BugFix] Tab order in quick-add dialog fixed.

I too am very interested in tools for combining images into grids of different dimensions and with different options.

It's something that I think would be useful to integrate into my Screenshot Captor tool, as I think people often have the need to combine multiple images into a grid.

I've considered writing a little tool for this but I keep thinking there must be good free/donationware/cheap tools for it already.

Can you elaborate a little bit on what you'd like to do.. i'm not sure exactly what you want.

It does give me an idea though.. I wonder if it might be useful to add a feature that would print out all images in the thumbnail panel, side by side with their comments, or something like that.  Sounds like a bit of work though..

This thread just confirms my general paranoia against ever using a "move" operation for more than one file or for sensitive data.. Always copy, check, then delete.

One thing i'd like you to try is to go to the General options tab.  If you have it set to "stay in memory longer", try setting that to "Average memory use" and see if that helps.

I'm going to split this issue off into its own thread, Iain.

You can just unpack the new files on top of the old ones -- except for the one mess up above which is now fixed -- your configuration files won't be messed with.

Usually its just the FindAndRunRobot.ext that is updated, and the help file.  But future updates could change other files.

well it sounds like you have a reliable problem on your hands -- which in a way is good -- i'll try to get a new beta to you in next day or two to test.

Someone mentioned on another post a similar problem -- I'm going to look into it here -- I have an idea for something to try that might fix it.

This is one of those tricky problems that is hard to reproduce.

Question: How many screenshots do you have in your thumbnail panel?

It sounds so amazing.. What an experience.  I can only imagine.  You really got a chance to step outside of our normal reality.  I'm jealous.
I can't wait to hear more about it as you have time to digest the experience.

Ok so now I know where the problem is I will try to fix it properly -- I wouldn't be surprised if this same crash wasn't happening in other scenarios as well.

Ok first report is, I'm fairly certain the bug is related to Duplicate Checking.

Can you try turning off duplicate checking (might be sufficient to also choose "Leave Original Ignore New") and see if that fixes the problem (if so you can remove sofice from the exclude list):

Let me know if that works for you.  Meanwhile I will try to fix the root of the problem.

How do I get the favorites from my XP-machine to the W7 machine?

Assuming you are happy replacing all the data (not just favorites) on the new W7 machine with all the data from the XP machine, just exit CHS on both machines, and then copy the contents of the Database directory from the old machine to the new one.

Now if replacing all of the data on the Win7 machine is not acceptable.. I'm afraid CHS does not have a nice easy way to do this.  Perhaps it's something i could add.

« Last post by mouser on November 06, 2011, 11:27 AM »
This is the result of something that confuses a lot of people.
The FARR default install comes with all of those folders, but they are just placeholders to help DcUpdater know what plugins are available for install.  The actual plugins are not installed by default, so they will not show up from within FARR.

Hi Jacob.

I can report that it does not crash with my open office (a bit old version) spreadsheet on windows xp pro (x64).

But I don't doubt it's happening on yours -- I just have to figure out why..

Can anyone else reproduce the problem?

In the meantime as a poor workaround until the bug is fixed you could add open office to the list of programs that CHS should ignore.  Just go to CHS options tab "Capture Options" and put the openoffice executable in the Ignore list (upper left).

For OpenOffice I think the filename to add is: soffice.bin

Meanwhile, I will try to reproduce this on a virtual machine with windows 7 and new version of open office.  Jacob can you check that the contents of the row dont matter? if you just have a row with 1 number in it, the crash still occurs?

Living Room / Re: Is "Thank you for your service" enough for veterans?
« Last post by mouser on November 06, 2011, 12:35 AM »
A man/woman in uniform has no more control over what military operations their country engages in than any other citizen.

That's why I think it makes sense to separate support for the men and women who serve in the military from the politicians and the military-industrial corporations who are always so hungry for war.

I think the anti-war movement has been very wise to make this distinction in modern times.

I think we have every right to demand that police officers and military men and women meet the highest standards of behavior and complain loudly when they do not.  And expect them to refuse illegal orders and speak out when they see wrongdoing, and to participate in our political process to bring about change for the better.

But it's unfair to hold a person in uniform responsible for decisions made by politicians.  And by the same token, military men and women have to accept that when people vehemently oppose a military intervention -- it is not a personal judgement against the men and women in the military.

Quick question, do you have the option checked to "Don't Auto Save Captures?"

Josh, thank you for your service.

Hmm, that's troubling and surprising.  Updating should not have caused any change to your favorites.

CHS is very reluctant to actually delete any clips, so it's hard to imagine any of your favorites actually being deleted, and I've never heard of this happening.  But maybe they are just misplaced somewhere..

The first step would be to find your CHS database file backups, and make a copy of them just in case.
If you're using Windows XP or running CHS portably, this will be in C:\Program Files\Clipboard Help+Spell\Backups.  If you're using windows vista or windows 7, it will by default be C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents\DonationCoder\Clipboard Help+Spell\Backups.

So the first thing i would do is make a copy of all the files there -- by default you will see backups from the last couple of weeks.

After I did that i would open the CHS options, go to the Backup/Maintenance tab, and click the "NOW" button to make a new backup with my current settings.  You could also make copies of the actual current files in the Database directory.

Ok so once you've done all that, you have some backed up files in a safe place so you don't have to worry about things getting worse than they already are, and you can experiment.

  • So the first thing I would do if I were you is see if you can find your previous and now missing favorites.
  • Is it possible that they are still there but are being filtered out of view?
  • Do you have any quick search filter set in the top bar of the main window?
  • If you go into the Favorites group on left you don't see them?
  • Do you remember any specific one you can search for using the quick search filter?
  • Try selecting the "ALL" group at top of the tree and searching for them.
  • See if any are in Recycle Bin.
