The one thing that prevented me from ever legally buying DOpus is the absurd price. Honestly, its usability advantages when compared to other file managers are not that large.

I've tried quite a few of them.  The incremental updates per year are not that much... but yeah, it's better to me than any others and thus worth the price at least for a periodic buy.

I only see 5 games on GOG Connect right now. I'm not sure if they're all different from the 7 earlier ones, or if just two of the previous ones dropped away. But it may be worth checking again.

They're different. None of the others are available right now.

Living Room / Surreal trip through the $175 B Amazon Marketplace
« Last post by wraith808 on December 19, 2018, 02:14 PM »

(courtesy of The Verge)

When you buy something on Amazon, the odds are, you aren’t buying it from Amazon at all. Plansky is one of 6 million sellers on Amazon Marketplace, the company’s third-party platform. They are largely hidden from customers, but behind any item for sale, there could be dozens of sellers, all competing for your click. This year, Marketplace sales were almost double those of Amazon retail itself, according to Marketplace Pulse, making the seller platform alone the largest e-commerce business in the world.

For sellers, Amazon is a quasi-state. They rely on its infrastructure — its warehouses, shipping network, financial systems, and portal to millions of customers — and pay taxes in the form of fees. They also live in terror of its rules, which often change and are harshly enforced. A cryptic email like the one Plansky received can send a seller’s business into bankruptcy, with few avenues for appeal.

Sellers are more worried about a case being opened on Amazon than in actual court, says Dave Bryant, an Amazon seller and blogger. Amazon’s judgment is swifter and less predictable, and now that the company controls nearly half of the online retail market in the US, its rulings can instantly determine the success or failure of your business, he says. “Amazon is the judge, the jury, and the executioner.”

That and more on the specific instance in the article that sounds Hellish and arbitrary at the Verge.

I purchase a lot off Amazon.  I did the vast majority of my Christmas shopping there.  I use Subscribe & Save, Prime Pantry, Prime Reload, Twitch Prime, and a lot of other Amazon programs.  I try to stay away from Kindle, but even have books there now, and excised Alexa in favor of Google Home (though it's really two devils in that case, rather than a devil and an angel).  But seeing these articles, it makes it hard to support them.  But so far, the convenience outweighs my conscience.  That, and knowing people who make a lot more money in that way than they ever were able to through Mail Order, eBay, and Brick and Mortar.

With the impending G+ doom, I've been looking at a lot of options: The FediVerse (Diaspora, HubZilla, etc), the Mastodon Federation, MeWe, OpenSocial, and more.

But I just came across the concept for SOLID. (Github)

From the page, the blurb is "Solid was created by the inventor of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Its mission is to reshape the web as we know it. Solid will foster a new breed of applications with capabilities above and beyond anything that exists today."

It's based on data ownership and making your data yours.  The applications that you choose to give access to it do not store that data, they merely use it to deliver their functionality to you.  This location where you store your data is termed a POD, which can be hosted on a provider, or locally, or in any location of your choosing.  It seems a lot like Keybase in that manner, though a lot less techy.

Has anyone looked into this or heard about it?  I'm just exploring it a bit now, as there is an importer for all of the G+ information exported from Takeout.

Yes, unfortunately the preview doesnt do anything with the images until after that point. If you attach them to the post as files, you'll see an option to embed them. Click that, and it should embed a thumbnail wherever the cursor is in the post.

Now, I make a NANY entry :) There's a few JSON Viewers out there, but none do what that html viewer does in my experience.  I'll also try to make something that allowes you to stitch selected JSON together in one file.

I apologize if this has been discussed anywhere on the forum but I did not turn up anything during a search.

Google+ is shutting down in four months (April 2019). They offer a service known as Takeaway that will download your G+ data but not viewable in a very convenient way.
In the G+ universe, the posts are shown and accessible on one webpage. When downloaded, each post is it's own html page. It would be nice if there was a way to view all the posts without having to open each one individually. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated by myself and the G+ community.

Larry

You should request it as JSON instead of HTML.  The HTML output is essentially useless.

That article makes me more paranoid about this notification from WinPatrol:

Why does Google Chrome need an elevation service?

My ergonomic needs are usually uppermost (and that could probably be true for most users, were they but aware of it) and before I use/trial a new app. I invariably head for the options panel for application settings  - for view/fonts/background colours, etc.
For example:
But that's for you. Makes no difference to me. Individual differences. That's the point.

That's usually what it comes to in the end.  And assuming that your method is better than someone else's method is folly.  Just as different people learn in different fashions, different people process work in different fashions.  And there's nothing wrong with that.  Only with use do you tend to find out what's right for you.  Blindly following someone else's methodology is a good way to get frustrated quickly.

You mean you Trust OneDrive?

I haven't seen any reason not to, and it's helped me out.  For the price, I get 1TB and Office for 5 people.

One Question about Syncovery:  Do you know how it will handle cases where the files are buried beyond the Max_Path point?  I run into this a lot on these exact folders.  I am sure that a number of them are going to be like that.  Many Backup programs either Choke or return error codes for those files.  Yet they  really are there and can be opened, read, modified etc. by the programs (and people) that put them there.

I don't have anything that deep that I can recall, unfortunately.  You could ask on the Syncovery site.  They've been responsive, even after the change from Super Flexible File Synchronizer.

Last time I got this software for free on 'BitsDuJour' or 'GiveAway Of The Day' and it helped me out with JSON.

Yet at 28 USD JSONBuddy isn't that expensive for what it does.

I just use plain text in Sublime Text or VS Code, along with a few tools that are online:

1240
I think if I ever had to do something that Syncovery didn't cover, that Robocopy would be easier to alter little aspects.  But so far, I haven't come up against anything that Syncovery didn't cover, so I just gave in and started using it pretty much exclusively.  I haven't messed with the scheduling yet.  But I've been thinking about it.

My backup routine is (a) I have my documents in a couple of locations, depending on use.  My books and such are directly in my OneDrive directory.  The projects that I can't directly sync (Scrivener, Development) are in their own folder.  I sync those to my OneDrive directories when I work in those folders.  I also sync my OneDrive directories that I want to have a backup copy of to my NAS.  So my development work and writing are in 4 different locations (not counting the fact that I sync OneDrive to 3 other computers), and my other things are in 3 different locations.  I've never had to resort to my backups, but hopefully, that's good enough if I ever do...

I may use Protocol Buffers as the data file format. See here: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=46840

I'd shy away from that for this.  You want them to be human readable, right?  That's been the deciding factor in a lot of cases...

We had this same discussion at work, and use a combination of the two.  I don't think that either is a case of lets use this in all cases, as each has its own strengths and weaknesses of which one of the primary ones that leads us to use JSON in many cases- JSON is human readable.

They say it well, right before their conclusion in that second article:

And probably lots more. In the end, as always, it’s very important to keep tradeoffs in mind and blindly choosing one technology over another won’t get you anywhere.

1244
PS:  Update I FINALLY got Robocopy to work   perfectly at that.  I have been told that I can even shorten this but here is the Working Script to create an empty copy of a dir with only all paths

Code: Text [Select]
  1. robocopy.exe /R:0 /W:0 "C:\SCRIPTS\A" "C:\SCRIPTS\B" /E /Z /Copy:DT /XF "*.???" /LOG:"C:\SCRIPTS\EMPTY.LOG"

where A is the original folder and B is the exact copy with no files in it
At this stage I alwasy add a pause when trying things i dont know for sure but all ran well and the log said no errors

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you too... and good job on the implementation!     I use robocopy at work for a variety of tasks, but just rather kick back with Syncovery at home :)
1245
Are you open to a pay solution?  I use Syncovery, and it can do exactly what you're saying.

Liquid Web is really a great outfit.  Again, maybe you can save some $$ on A,B,C but when you want voice tech-help, they are there, with real names, in the USA, lots of savvy, and your successful resoluation being their concern.  Our business had to move away from them for a hosted package, for our main website, but I am sticking with them for lots of stuff, on one reasonably priced server.  The usage may include some auxiliary landing pages, blogs and such from the biz, so then the $60 a month or so is not so daunting, as it might be for only private use.

You've basically outlined why I stay with them, even though it costs a bit more.
1247
Yes, those are indeed the pair.  And within them, I run Powershell, MSys, Cmd, etc.  They're basically the same as Promptpal.  They aren't a shell in and of themselves, they're just an enhancement to shells that already exist.  Those others that you list fall into the same category.  Shells would be Powershell, MSys, Cmd, Bash, Cygwin, etc.

I would go crazy with this layout.

And as an alternative, I can't see myself ever going back to even a TKL, let alone a full sized.  I'm preparing to build an 1800 (the TKC 1800), as that might tempt me.  But I'm doing that more for the exercise in making a cool board, as anything else.

I've used bbPress and BuddyPress.  Of the two, I liked bbPress better, and it had most of the functionality of SMF (which I used before) easily accessible.  I had to add a separate plugin for polls, but that wasn't difficult either.  I haven't used them in a couple of years (both were for guilds, and the groups that I was using them for either broke up, or I stopped playing the games that we were using it for), but I imagine that they have only become better in the interim.

A couple of articles on Forum plugins:

Oh, and as a plus, I was running on LiquidWeb infrastructure also, so they were very compatible with that.

Well, if you're using it as a blog, why not try blogging software?  Forums on WordPress are actually pretty well implemented for the forum use, and of course blogging is well implemented. Or is that not an option?
