N.A.N.Y. 2012 / Re: NANY 2012 Mugs, etc. -- All participants please read in

Ok I have created the DonationCoder shop for NANY2012, and made products with "Finalist" and "Developer".  No more suggestions please!

You can view the items here:
http://www.cafepress...onationcoder/8418608

Do *not* buy anything there yet!

I will be sending out gift certificates to participants today if all goes well.  The gift certificates will be for $20, which is enough to buy yourself a mug, shotglass, drinking glass, mousepad, tote bag, or anything under about $13, and have it shipped anywhere in the world.  Many of the other items will end up costing more than that, so if you want something else you'll have to pay the remainder yourself.

jgpaiva, that could happen if people use the service to spam others, but i think in this case this isn't a real concern.
but on the other hand if you are just using NoteMe to send email to yourself, it's easy enough to whitelist the email,
so i don't think this is a big concern.  having mail marked as spam is only really problematic if you are mailing it to others.

Hi SFDude.

Well the Preview Tab is rendering using the IE ActiveX control.. HOWEVER, it never opens web pages inside it -- those are all opened with your default browser.
So the only thing shown in the preview IE activeX is the list of urls, which doesn't contain any content from web pages themselves.  So it should be absolutely safe.

Don't get discouraged.. most of my apps don't get used much if at all either :)

And I'm sorry if it seems like I am trying to warn people from using it -- I'm not.. I'm much more focused on trying to save you the headaches of having to deal with problems further down the road.

There are plenty of diary programs for the computer, ranging from the very simple to the complex. WebcamVideoDiary, though, brings the journal concept into the 21st century by letting you easily create a video diary using your Web cam. You could do this yourself using a couple of different pieces of software, but WebcamVideoDiary puts them together in one easy-to-use package. You get a straightforward interface for recording your video comments, along with space to keep any text notes that you'd like.

I link to have a thread with pointers to reviews and recommendations of my programs.

So users can visit to read more opinions about our programs, and most importantly so that our users can easily go and leave their comments for others to read.  If you like our programs, it's one of the best ways you can help - it let's people know the software is actually being used by real people who like it.

That's a good question.  My suggestion would be to at some point start a new thread about it, and point to the new thread from the NANY thread.

Very cool.  Like Renegade I have a hard time even imagining the experience -- I'd really love to hear more about the mental aspects of it -- the progression of moods and feelings during the trip.  60 days is just such a huge amount of time to be in such a different environment, away from everything stable that you are used to except for each other..  If the photos are any clue you guys look remarkably well adjusted.  I think if those photos were of me, on day 1 I'd be smiling and by day 50 I'd look like I needed to be institutionalized.

'participant' or 'winner' ?, if one seems like consolation prize, the other makes it top prize. There must be some in between.

agreed. we need a better term.

"Developer" could work, but maybe there is something better?

What about "Finalist"  ?

Hi Weg,

My plan is to release some updates of my software this weekend, including SC -- i will see if i can track down this bug and fix it for that release.

nice ideas.

i particularly like the set selection size thing -- i'll do that right away.

the open with SC.. i can add that easily enough, but would it be ok if sc switched to that file's folder too?  if not it might be harder.

When i close, and open, "preference and option" window, this window das not remember where is close down and always open to the same monitor on LBC!

you mean it does not remember where the Preferences window was last located?

I don't understand the 2nd bug -- could you try to explain it again? maybe a screenshot?

I have found unicode universally painful as hell to deal with -- even when working with languages that have good support for it (Python).

Living Room / Re: Found on the Web: Short Rant Against Users of Free Web Apps
« Last post by mouser on January 05, 2012, 11:26 AM »
I wonder if the key problem here isn't so much that a service is technically "free", but that the free users view the service as making money off of them indirectly.  If facebook and google are making billions from advertising off their "free" services, it's not surprising when users don't feel a strong loyalty or bond with the site (how google continues to reap so much good will from people i don't know -- they certainly don't get it from me).

I think the relationship with users is quite different if they don't feel like they are being used as cattle.

Living Room / Found on the Web: Short Rant Against Users of Free Web Apps
« Last post by mouser on January 05, 2012, 10:37 AM »
Short post about frustration and abandonment of a freemium web service -- being picked up by sites like slashdot and hackernews.

There's nothing notable or special about this -- I think it's just striking a nerve that I suspect we'll see more of as more and more business people come to terms with the limits of building a business model on giving away free services.  Still, it's worth reading and discussing..

I am done with “free”. I have come to the realization that most people who want something for free will never, ever think of paying you, no matter how valuable they find your service...
