And.. we're back!

That was a very long 24 hours offline -- felt like a month to me.

And by the way it seems like the internet protests have had an effect: http://arstechnica.c...onents-in-senate.ars

One tip to try in some apps is to use "by single lines" scrolling mode, which can give much more overlap between captures -- making it easier for the program to guess overlap values.  If you do this, use the "ByRows Mult" value to advance many lines per capture, which will reduce memory consumption and increase the Maximum scrolls value.  I might try to add some code to best guess which pre-capture settings to use..

The IRC channel will still be open for anyone who wants to chat. Grab yourself an IRC client (like mirc) and join the efnet network, channel #donationcoder.

When I click on the gear, and select "Capture Now", it does the scroll (and presumably the capture), and then pops open the define capture settings dialog. The dialog only has an "Ok, begin scrolling capture" button.

that definitely should NOT happen.. im not even sure how it could..   well if you hit escape it could happen.

Holy crap did it just do a weird capture while I was playing with it just now. It appears to be a full scroll of the page ... But it's five pages wide..!?!

the default setting tries to do a horizontal scroll of 5 pages wide.  if the pages dont change it will normally crop those away.. but any change in content (for example an animation on the page) and you will get extra copies because it will think the page has scrolled.  the safest thing in this case is to turn off horizontal scroll if there is no horizontal scroll to perform.

Ctrl-Click is apparently caught by IE to select text. Solution (by mouser) is to use the gear button, but that's kinda out of reach with a maximized window

the new beta should show the button even on maximized window now doesn't it?

For some captures, like a forum thread, where it can't detect when its reached the bottom due to animated images or something, make sure you adjust the TRIM values to get rid of duplicate horizontal or vertical pages, before you click to guess margins and overlaps.  That is, if you find that the final page is duplicated several times without being detected, manually adjust the trim to fix this before continuing.  Otherwise it can get confused.  This should only happen in scenarios where the final page has something on it that changes over time.

We are going offline on January 18 to protest the SOPA bill.

I always wonder how much good such things do, but we stand with our brothers and sisters at Wikipedia, and they have determined that a blackout protest is important -- so we will join with them.

You can read more about the blackout here: http://en.wikipedia....mmary_and_conclusion

See also the earlier discussion on this DC thread.

So will we also be able to save the uncombined pages as individual files?

can someone shed some light on a scenario where that would be useful?

I guess i will post the alpha testing version publicly.. Be prepared for some pain if you try it -- people are reporting mixed success and confusion.

This is a MiniCap-based test -- not a full version of Screenshot Captor.

Download: https://www.donation...wnloads/MiniCaps.zip

Normally I ask people to report problems, but I think in this case it might be better for morale to ask people to report unexpected successes.

NOTE 1: Pay attention to the options prior to capture regarding horizontal captures, and max scrolls -- you may want to turn of horizontal captures and expand vertical scroll limit.

NOTE 2: For some applications (firefox for example), you need to click on the web page content before engaging capture or scrolls will fail to scroll.

Message me if you want to try an early standalone version of Scrolling Capture tool.

I've run into one very unfortunate hiccup that is going to require me to write some more advanced code.

Even so, I hope to have a standalone (MiniCap-based) test implementation of Scrolling Capture tool released in the next couple of days.

Would be easy to add if that was desired -- still not sure why one would want to do that.

Hmm, that's unfortunate. :)

I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that SnagIt does a good job.

Regarding:

I would love to have some examples from people who have use cases where they would like to perform a scrolling capture but existing tools (other screenshot tools) have failed them --- so I can test the new method on these.

This includes horizontal scrolling capture, which I know some other tools have trouble with.

[I just used the new code to quickly grab a perfect scrolling capture of cnn.com homepage from firefox where there was horizontal and vertical scrolling].

I'm happy to report that so far auto-guessing of margins and overlaps is working pretty well.

This is *extremely* good news -- it means that it should be able to handle the easy/common cases mostly automatically, while still letting advanced users handle really tricky cases manually.

How do existing tools perform on a scrolling capture of the ctrl+alt+delete task list?

Make sure the Ordering column is viewable in the clip grid (click the tiny button on the far left of the clip grid header if you dont see it, to enable it).  Then adjust those values on individual clips to control their ordering.

Following up on this -- since quick paste popup is what one uses much of the time, it makes some sense to me to redo the way the user can configure this, and make it more flexible and easy to customize to make it exactly the way one might want it.. I'll consider.

Wish me luck -- today is the day I try to implement the auto-guessing of values -- and the day we find out if the autoscroll capture is going to be powerful but incredibly hard to use tool -- or powerful and mostly automatic.

I removed AddToAny, and replaced it with another middleman, SmartAddon, based on this nice roundup:
http://www.raymond.c...formance-comparison/

HOWEVER, I dislike using these middleman tools.  We need to replace them with local html code that handles this stuff without having to fetch content from a 3rd party middleman.  Anyone want to try whipping up some html/js?

Welcome to the site shx!

Ok the main place where you want to go are the two options tab "Quick Paste Pop-up Menu" and "Quick Paste Menu 2".

Another progress report.

The good:
1. Useable in scenarios where other scrolling capture techniques are not.
2. Very tweakable to get scrolling capture final output perfect.
3. Easy to abort and try different scrolling options -- including manual scrolling.

The bad:
1. Much too much work involved manually changing options to get the final result.
2. Requires skill and a non-trivial understanding of the process to tweak the assembly settings.
3. Tons of memory use.

The hope:
I hope that I can produce a fairly good procedure for automatically/smartly guessing good assembly settings by analyzing the resulting captures.   That would mean that in most cases you won't have to tweak anything after the capture.

It acts as if the launchbar dock was a lot bigger.

i should be able to fix this -- there is no reason LBC should do this.
