Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.107.04 beta - Sep 23, 2012
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2012, 11:25 PM »
Is anyone else getting new exception errors under win7 with one of my plugins installed?  I have a feeling that the new use of a manifest file in the new build of FARR is causing windows to be more strict about plugins trying to save their options under program files\ instead of in user doc area.  I think i may have to release an update of my plugins asap..

I uploaded new versions of all my plugins that should fix the problem I hope.

Newsletter for February 14, 2012
"Codename: Heart of a Bird"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings.  It's been about a month since we posted the results of our NANY 2012 event; if you haven't checked out the videos of all of the new free apps yet, you'll find a link in section 4 below -- I encourage you to give them a look.

Things have been a bit quiet on DC since then, except for the day we joined ranks with Wikipedia and went offline for 24 hours to protest and help kill the proposed SOPA legislation that would harm Internet freedom (see section 8 below), and except for a major new software release: Screenshot Captor 3.

I hope you will forgive me taking some space in the newsletter editorial to talk a bit about this release.  I want to say thank you to all the Screenshot Captor users and testers, and especially the donators, who have made it possible for me to keep working on the program for all these years.  Version 2 came out on September 3rd, 2005.  That's six years and over 100 updates ago.

If you've not tried Screenshot Captor yet, this might be the perfect time to do so.  And if you're already a user of Screenshot Captor but haven't yet made a donation -- I'm hoping you will take this opportunity to do so -- it would mean a lot to me.  Even better would be to take some time and use our DonationCredits system to distribute your donation to different members on our site whose work you want to support.

Lastly, I want to dedicate this Screenshot Captor Version 3 release to Gizmo's Tech Support Alert website, which gave Screenshot Captor its Best in Class award for screenshot tools.  Gizmo has always been super supportive of this site, and I can't express how honored I feel to have Screenshot Captor receive that award.  It motivated me to double my efforts to improve the program.  See below for links to more reviews as well as some videos showing off the new features.

Oh yes -- and happy Valentine's day!

2. DonationCoder Software Updates and Discussions

Below you will find some updates and discussion threads for some of the main DC applications.  The Screenshot Captor and Find and Run Robot releases this month also mark the start of a new process for packaging the releases.  In the past each program had a single zip-compatible installer.  The new releases are now provided as two separate downloads, a standard installer and a portable zip file.  This should eliminate any confusion with portable versions and eliminate some partial download difficulties.  In addition you will find the files are now digitally signed, which should eliminate some annoying warnings about unknown downloads in some browsers.

3. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions.  In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

4. DC Member Software Threads

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on.  This month quite a few of the projects from NANY 2012 are seeing some active development.

5. Mini-Reviews

We are always interested in hearing what our forum members think of software they use.

6. General Software Discussion

Almost half the posts on the forum fall into the category of general software discussions, questions, recommendations, etc. This is one of the most active sections of the DC forum and a great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software discussions.

7. Specific Software Discussion

This section of the newsletter draws attention to some of the standout discussions about specific programs that have been started since the last newsletter.

8. Fun and Education: Website Discoveries, Debates, Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out...

9. Discounts and Giveaways

We haven't been doing too many discounts and giveaways lately.  That's partly a reflection of the existence of some reasonable sites dedicated to such things.  But I did want to note a few items.

Mass Effect 3 is coming out soon and it will be one of the few games I play this year.

There is a transparency setting for frames, push that to max.

Version 2.104.01 - Feb 14, 2012
  • [MajorFeature] Executable and setup are now digitally signed for extra security; instead of a zip-compatible installer, there are now 2 separate downloads for installer and portable version.
  • [BugFix] When using the -launch commandline call, and several other unusual places where files were launched, custom plugins were not being given a chance to take over launching.
  • [BugFix] Some windows 7 start menu items were failing to launch (for example the Snipping tool)
  • [MinorFeature] Added context menu item to run the selected result "as admin"
  • [MinorFeature] New option in custom font overides to set statusbar font size same as small text fontsize.

Thanks so much everyone for the feedback.
I guess this is good enough for me to do a public release of this version.

Next version I will do some more substantial feature additions.

Beta download is now gone as it is now an official download 2.104.01 (no need to update if you already grabbed the beta).

Developer's Corner / Essay: Mobile Sites vs. Apps: The Coming Strategy Shift
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2012, 06:23 AM »
Interesting article on the future business market for mobile sites vs mobile apps:

As of this writing, there's no contest: ship mobile apps if you can afford it. Our usability studies with mobile devices clearly show that users perform better with apps than with mobile sites. (Mobile sites have higher measured usability than desktop sites when used on a phone, but mobile apps score even higher.)...
In the future, the cost-benefit tradeoff for apps vs. mobile sites will change... Now for the $64,000 question — or, more accurately for most companies, the million-dollar question: When will the recommended strategy change? In other words, when will the changeover in favor of mobile sites be strong enough for you to abandon mobile apps?..

Screenshot Captor / Re: Can SC capture user defined multiple objects ?
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2012, 05:42 AM »
So let me ask.. if you use the new object capture mode in SC3 -- you can capture any one object easily -- and you would just like a faster way to capture a bunch of objects one after the other more quickly?

So in SC3, if you start an object capture, then you control+Click, you get a dialog where you can push 2 to capture another object, and so on.

So if I simply added an additional key that captured the object under the red box and immediately let you stay in the red box mode to capture more objects, that would do what you want?

I'd particularly like to hear if MS Office links launch fine for people with x64 operating systems.

Find And Run Robot / FARR beta release Feb 14, 2012 -- feedback please?
« Last post by mouser on February 14, 2012, 02:51 AM »
I have uploaded a Find and Run Robot beta:

NOTE: The beta is now an official release, download via the normal Find and Run Robot webpage.

I'd appreciate some feedback about whether it's launching everything properly for people?  This is the first build using a manifest and signed executable, and some new code to disable windows redirection for x64 Operating systems, and so i'm a little nervous about things breaking.

So I would appreciate some feedback about whether the new build refuses to launch any files/documents that the previous build had not trouble with.  The beta *should* fix the problem where some windows 7 tools (Snipping tool for example) in the start menu were not launching.

Thanks!

I noticed your RaggedBR2.png and RaggedBR2.png.mask...  Just couldn't figure out how to use them...

ah yes, so i think if you just named your frame like: "HandsFrame.png"
and then named your mask: "HandsFrame.png.mask"

and put them both in Frames directory, they should get applied both at the same time.

you have to account for part of the screenshot getting cut off the ends.

yeah, on my todo list is a fix for that.  wouldn't be that hard.

ha!
pretty nice.

Screenshot - 2_12_2012 , 5_55_51 PM_ver001.png

hell if people are going to start using this frame/mask feature i just might start making it easier to use, like not having to apply the mask and frame as separate steps..
