I think it makes a ton of sense to have the old pc up and running for quite some time while you use the new machine, to make sure you didn't forget anything.

With the current pc prices I highly recommend having 2 pcs so you can do this kind of thing easily.

I can't think of any licensing trouble you would have.

Beta addon to do full screen directX capture using this code for SC here: https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=30008

Note: The capture code is a bit of a hit or miss thing.. sometimes it kills the patient during or after injection, sometimes it doesn't.

Screenshot Captor / Screenshot Captor DirectX Capture Addon - EARLY BUGGY BETA
« Last post by mouser on February 18, 2012, 07:33 PM »
If anyone wants to try the new screenshot captor addon for capturing DirectX full screen images, I have uploaded it here:

You will need to install the new screenshot captor release, and then the addon.  The addon will also make you install the SlimDx runtimes, and you will have to reboot your pc after the install.

Then you can set a hotkey for DirectX full screen capture (may default to Ctrl+Alt+Shift+X).

How well does it work?

Well.. It's a bit hit or miss at this point -- and I have to warn you that there is a fairly good chance it will crash your directX application when invoked.

If your directx game has its own way to take screenshots, that will without a doubt be a better solution than trying to use SC to take them.

So this is only for people who really like testing stuff early.  But I would like to hear reports of whether it works for you.

Thanks to Justin S, who's code powers this addon.  See this thread for a more discussion of the issues involved: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=29890.0

Screenshot Captor / Re: Feature request: Sizable canvas.
« Last post by mouser on February 18, 2012, 07:28 PM »
Although not as nice as your diagram, you can resize canvas from the Edit->Resize Image menu (Ctrl+C), just make sure you check the "Resize Canvas" checkbox on the right hand size.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service
« Last post by mouser on February 17, 2012, 05:07 PM »
On my old computer (which was slow) I set it to use 0% cpu and bandwidth while I was present, which meant it only did it's job when I left the computer for more than 10 minutes.

Yeah but CrashPlanService.exe is using 50-80mb of memory even when it's just sitting in the background doing NOTHING.  I'm not even talking about the desktop application which uses a lot more.  I'm talking about the background process that should be doing nothing (watching for friends who might try to connect?).  Even for me, who usually doesn't worry about such things, that's pretty excessive memory use for a tool that's not doing *anything*.

It may be due to highend's observation that this is a java app..

Anyone else?

There is also a place to set it from the pop-up dialog itself, and from the system tray.  Try setting it there.

If that still doesn't work, send my your ScreenshotCaptor.ini settings file ([email protected]) and i will see what's up.

awesome!

You should be able to put the icon in the alias directory.  Icon with multiple sizes should work fine.

Why not send me the alias "package" you have to far and i can see if i can remember how to tweak it to behave properly regarding icon.

Thats the option -- after you set that you should not see the post-capture dialog.  Works here.
Are you sure you have that adjusted that setting?

Since I am not a user of the post-capture dialog I would be keenly interested if it was being forced on people :)

Talking to app about different advertising services, it occurred to me that an advertising service that would be really interesting would be one where you could set some fee for showing ads on your site for a day, and then have NOTHING shown unless someone reached that fee.

That might be nice for a site like DC, because we could set the fee high enough that on 350 days of the year there would be no ads, but once a month or so there would be a day of ads for some special event that someone really wanted to get the word out about..  Seems like that kind of thing we might be able to live with..  Interesting idea at least..

ps. The last time we tried putting up ads I decided it would be much more consistent with the nature of this site to "advertise" our own stuff -- since we have so many different things going on hear.  Thus was born "Cody Quote" boxes which you see in the sidebar of some of our pages.  That still seems to me like the best thing -- and 1000% preferable to advertising other peoples stuff!

Just want to reiterate something:

More and more I have come to believe in the importance and significance of the idea of users directly funding the products they want.

And more and more I have come to view with frustration, suspicion, and trepidation, the move towards making everything cost free and funded by advertising something else.  I think the distortion this does to everything is harmful.  I think the world is a better place when people contribute directly to fund stuff they like.

So.. trying to fund the site using ads instead of donations is really NOT NOT NOT a direction I want to go.

But I'm not opposed to trying short term experiments to see what it's like.

Nothing wrong with rsync, or the ftp-based tools i already have.  But that doesn't address the issue of what online storage provider to use.  You say you use hidrive -- that's outside of my budget.

and I fear it might be lost or changed to something totally different because of this move.

i as well think that the whole feel of the community could be badly disrupted and tainted if we ever moved to trying to run ads on the site permanently.  i think there is a good chance it would make people feel less like donating, leading to less of a community, and less of a sense of participation, etc.  that is why i do not have any intention of continuing it long term.  i just think it's useful to test it out and see what kind of results it has.

i'm just curious about it -- curious to see if the ads bring in less or more revenue then when we tried it in 2007.  Curious to see if it feels as counter-productive and dirty as it did back then.  Curious to see if it changes our position in search engines or search engine analytics. Curious to see what ads are shown.  Just plain curious!
