I don't think I can answer that definitively, and I don't want to pass on misinformation -- but the impression I got was that tomorrow they are going to merge all search history they have on you so far, into their private opaque storage of your habits -- and that you may not ever be able to undo that or clear that.  You may be able to clear your web search history after tomorrow from some separate standalone list, but your prior search history from earlier may be walled off from you and kept permanently and inaccessible to you.  Again I don't know for sure but that's the impression I got.  Maybe someone else can help clarify.

From ITWorld:

Google announced in January it would unify most of its services under a single privacy policy and a single set of data-gathering tools that will arrange all Google's useful data on each of its customers in an efficient database, from which it is much simpler to sell that customer as a commodity to advertisers looking for specific patterns of behavior.

... if you're cautious at all about the amount of information Google has about you, uncertain at all how little evil Google will do with all the consolidated information or just a little woogy about anyone having big chunks of surveillance on you with a yen to sell it: go erase your Google history now.

...

Tomorrow, after all your odd searches, secret obsessions and kinky lunch reading is ensconced inside a special database, you won't be able to get to the data any more...

The history you have to delete is on Google.com. When you're signed in, Google keeps track of where you're going and what you're looking at, and stores that history on its server files.

Today only you can still delete that data, by following the instructions provided by EFF.

Step by step guide to clearing your search history via the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation): here.

Great work Armando.  I will certainly put this tip in the help file, but I should probably also try to detect the presence of MSE and report the tip to the user if it is found running.

It's new, and used when you capture an OBJECT (not shown when you simply capture the screen or the active window).

You can't stop it from popping up yet, but I will be adding a way to bypass it and simply capture the object in the next version.

I agree it's not a long enough sample time to get a really accurate picture -- but it should be enough to satisfy some curiosity by the time the month is over.  We could always extend it a little bit if it looked like things were changing fast enough that we wanted to wait for them to settle.

ha -- it's true once you see it it's pretty dead on.

Ok i understand now what you want.

Perhaps a simpler way to say it is:

"I want to be able to print from an application (MS Word for example) to PDF -- but with each page stored as an image, so that no text is stored or recoverable from the PDF file."
11811
i'm not sure i understand what you are asking for.

I am currently trying CrashPlan on my main real pc.  Memory use has been in the 200-300mb range, which is high, but cpu usage is reasonable and i feel like i can spare the memory, so i'm not stressing over it.  We shall see..

Tao, interesting idea.. but i'm afraid that would be a very narrow experiment..

Wraith, your question is the same as Chris's, and I don't have a very good answer.. It's just been a few years since we last tried it and I'm curious to what happens if we try it again.. How much revenue will ads generated? What kind of ads will it show? Will it change the number of people who donate? Will google change our search rankings?  None of these reasons are particularly compelling, and if it would take a lot of work to put it in place it would hardly be worth the effort, but since we implemented it a long time ago it's really just a matter of throwing a switch.

« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2012, 08:38 PM »
Interesting.. Well it shouldnt be invoking more than one at a time, so I'm not sure why it would make a difference how rapidly you *try* to capture from the directx window -- it should only be doing one attempt at a time.

However it's possible that the code to unhook is not being given enough time to do its thing before the commandline tool exits?

Also, given my testing which shows that success is a bit random -- it may not have to do with trying to do lots of captures in a row -- and more to do with simply an X% probability of failing to capture on any given request?

Appreciate the thoughts, but 90 days is too long to live with ads on the site.

These aren't real articles. They are generated by software to look and sound real, but they are fake and generated completely autonomously.

Ok so I guess the game is to explain what these articles are.

I know the answer but I'll not spoil it for others who are reading these wondering why they feel confused.

Anand,

I'm afraid your experience is typical -- most people do not seem to care much if they are bombarded by ads because it has become our normal way of existing.

To be more accurate, last month we averaged 29.20 gigabytes per day.

Appreciate all the thoughtful comments, but just to keep us grounded:

  • I do not want to put ads permanently on DC, and do not intend to do so, and won't be doing so.
  • I do not think we get the kind of daily traffic that would bring much income from ads (we have 35+ gigabytes a day of downloads of our software, which is pretty huge, but we do not have so many daily readers, the way a popular blog does)
  • This is really just a matter of being curious, nothing more.
