This video actually gives you REAL science to back up claims, and not just some namby-pamby soft claims and BS like you usually get. (Very refreshing!)

I recommend watching that video very highly. I cannot stress enough just how insightful it is, and how good the information is. Most often you get some wishy-washy BS with no hard science and no real information. This guy is hard core and doesn't dumb things down. He has actual information and explains it intelligently. That being said, put your thinking cap on as it will challenge you unless you are well educated in biochemistry.

Thanks for the video.  The book the guy mentioned by John Yudkin:

  Pure, White and Deadly

Sounds quite interesting too -- but out of print...

According to:

  http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread36157-6.html#53

The book may be back in print around 2012-11.

The following site was brought up in the video:

SweetSurprise.com - The Facts about High Fructose Corn Syrup

Also came across this bit on Linus Pauling and John Yudkin:

When a user of my software has a problem or a question, I would love to see a short screencast of the problem occurring instead of vague textual description (missing crucial context) in an email.

Great use case!

A related use case involves a user that would like to create a video tutorial for my software, but does not want to invest too much time.

Another nice one :)

Now why isn't this sort of thing in the OS ;)

Thanks for the clarification.  I think then that Wubi may not fit:

I want to have a linux OS on my winxp, without a boot live cd or something, just as I run a portable app or it would still be ok if I have to install it

Or may be I'm missing something.

Living Room / Re: I want a Sony Xperia SX, but I think it's stupid to buy one.
« Last post by ewemoa on September 03, 2012, 03:08 AM »
To be honest though, my preference is some very small device that communicates with a larger device which I keep in my bag.

Future smart watches that speak Bluetooth  (successors to the likes of the pebble) are what I'm hoping for.  I don't really want a device that is a phone.  What I want is the ability to use a mobile network for voice and data -- along with WiFi, etc.

The small device I might carry on me -- I'd like for it to be easy to glance at with a minimal display which allows me to do a few essential things (perhaps some simple acknowledgement to messages it receives from a larger device).  For more complex tasks I can imagine pulling out more powerful computational power from my bag -- I should be able to decide this through a simple interaction with the small device.

I don't think I'm alone in imagining this sort of thing.

We're not that uniform, but I bet the market here is comparable to whatever they are getting in Asia.

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population, Japan's population is about 128 million while that of the U.S. is 314 million.  I am clueless regarding what the target sizes are for this phone, but I bet it's much easier to target to larger groups in Japan than the U.S.

I checked a couple of other sites.  It's not just me.  people really want the SX.

I wonder how many people this would add up to.

Don't get me wrong, there have been devices I've wanted that have only been available in other countries!  I've usually given up with the thinking that what I would like and the way in which I'd like to use something is never common enough to be interesting to a large company.  Trying to satisfy my gadget desires has seemed futile for some years now so for the last few years I've decided it's not worth directing my energy there.  Perhaps the recent activity of folks building their own hardware is a constructive way to redirect one's energies :)

Still, I can appreciate small phones -- I recently chose an older (a model from 2 years back) smaller phone over more recent offerings because it would fit more easily in trouser pockets.

Perhaps a case of...If you can release something that's less sophisticated and make more profit...

My impression with Japan and Korea (at least recently) is that people are willing to pay more for things than in some other countries (e.g. U.S.) -- this might be the case seeing as both of these countries appear to be much more uniform than say the U.S., so it's easier to tailor to larger audiences.  I don't know if this is true, but may be it's a factor.

Does Wubi have a mode of operation that works while Windows is running?

From the Wikipedia page:

"Wubi adds an entry to the Windows boot menu which allows the user to run Linux."

My memory of its operation was that it required a choice at boot time.  May be I missed something or things have changed?

I don't know what sorts of programs you use, but if they are command line oriented, tools such as tmux or screen might be put to good use.

I'm not familiar with how mobile phone stuff works in the U.S. -- it's easy enough to bring a phone to some carrier and get them to use it?

It's possible the prices you came across were for sign-up with a plan.  The following two links lead to pages which IIUC suggest that if one actually uses the phone for 24 months with a plan determined at sign-up, the SX initially costs 13400 yen (pages in Japanese):

  http://someya.tv/xperia/device/gxsxprice01.php
  http://www.itmedia.co.jp/mobile/articles/1208/10/news084.html

In my experience with Sony products in recent times, I've not found them to be amenable to the idea of people using their products in ways that they haven't specifically thought are good for Sony (like Apple).  In recent years, I have the impression that many companies are following this path.  Sony and Apple products are things I am not likely to purchase any more -- I used to though.

I didn't manage to find out anything useful regarding whether the phone can be purchased without signing up for service.

See?  The docomo site, if you click the "English" button on the main page, shows this: (see attachment in previous post)
What the f--- does "In Japanese only" mean?

May be this is what 40hz meant -- in this case I believe it means that if you click on the link, the resulting page is in Japanese.

There was a downloadable manual for the phone and within it there was a description of a procedure for changing the UI language so I don't think you have anything to worry about on that account.

I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you're looking for, but I've had some good luck with (haven't tried Zorin OS -- but have tried others):

  YUMI

Version 0.0.7.0 claims to support Zorin OS -- see "List of Installable Live Linux Distributions" on the aforementioned page.

Also came across:

  http://zorin-os.webs.com/apps/forums/topics/show/2031471

I've not used the mentioned UNetbootin.

One more thread:

  Persistent for USB

I have used Universal USB Installer before but I don't remember about its persistent-related functionality.

The following page appears to indicate that the SX is on sale:

  http://www.sonymobile.co.jp/product/docomo/so-05d/

At least I think that's what:

  http://www.sonymobile.co.jp/product/docomo/so-05d/images/index_bg.jpg

means.

The following also seems to claim availability:

  http://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/product/with/so05d/

Just tested with WinSCP 4.3.9 (portable mode) with success.

The settings used were:

  • Host name: dcmembers.com
  • Port number: 21
  • User name: <filled-in-appropriately>
  • Password: <filled-in-appropriately>
  • File protocol: FTP TLS Explicit encryption

Note that for File protocol there are two drop-downs.
1195
May be mouser or someone with admin access to dcmembers can examine the logs on the server end for the ftp daemon and/or perhaps DOpus has some diagnostic ability (e.g. recording network-related activities via a log) that might be utilized to investigate further as to why its not succeeding with FTP SSL Explicit mode...

Possibly useful things to look for in the logs include error messages and port numbers...I believe for dcmembers, one wants to initially connect to port 21 (not 990).
1196
Just some confirming data...

So it looks like filezilla uses one way to successfully log in, and dopus works with the other way.

IIRC, when I use FileZilla for dcmembers, I use FTP TLS in Explicit mode.

From the command line, I think I've had success using both SFTP as well as scp (older method in SSH protocol for file transfer).

Note that despite similarities in naming, FTP and SFTP are entirely different protocols.

Perhaps DOpus provides some ability to view diagnostic information regarding network connections (e.g. logs)...

Heck, even Wikipedia has being found doing information manipulation, eliminating information that is against the believes of whoever is an op there while putting propaganda as the truth.

Do you know if they have manipulated the history of edits for any page?

has a bit about being able to lay a document near the device and have it take pictures as you turn pages:

Quite neat sounding!

May be there's a video of that somewhere...
