Developer's Corner / Microsoft gives app developers 180 days to fix bugs
« Last post by app103 on July 16, 2013, 05:41 PM »
But the Redmond giant has also announced a change to the Security Policy for its Store Apps, in order to make the apps available on Windows Store, Windows Phone Store, Office Store, and Azure Marketplace safer for users.

"The policy, which is effective immediately, requires developers to fix security vulnerabilities in their apps and enables Microsoft to remove an app from sale if the developer does not provide an effective fix. The requirement applies to all apps available in the online stores, including Microsoft apps," the company explained.

"Developers will have a maximum of 180 days to submit an updated app for security vulnerabilities that are not under active attack and are rated Critical or Important according to the Microsoft Security Response Center rating system. The updated app must be submitted to the store within 180 days of the first report that reproduces the issue."

Living Room / Feds asked to avoid DEF CON this year
« Last post by app103 on July 16, 2013, 05:14 PM »
Jeff Moss (aka “The Dark Tangent”), founder and director of the Black Hat conference and DEF CON, has officially announced that employees of US federal agencies should keep away from this year's edition of DEF CON, which is scheduled for the beginning of August.

"For over two decades DEF CON has been an open nexus of hacker culture, a place where seasoned pros, hackers, academics, and feds can meet, share ideas and party on neutral territory. Our community operates in the spirit of openness, verified trust, and mutual respect," he wrote in a statement titled "Feds, we need some time apart."

"When it comes to sharing and socializing with feds, recent revelations have made many in the community uncomfortable about this relationship. Therefore, I think it would be best for everyone involved if the feds call a "time-out" and not attend DEF CON this year. This will give everybody time to think about how we got here, and what comes next," he concluded.

Living Room / Re: Computers Outlawed in Florida

Actually that's not even the worst part. The worst part was the flimsy assed excuse that the came up with for banning the cafes in the first place. You see...The cafe's were construed to be a specifically cash business...which then of course auto-magically made them more susceptible to (well basically causal of) crime.

I shit you not, it was on the news...and came directly out of the mouth of one of the state big wigs.

What a complete and utter jackass. It seems none of these retards has ever heard of, check cashing companies, pawn shops, we buy gold/silver stores, or any bar/liquor store ... All of which are either strictly or predominantly cash businesses.

I frequently left the bar at night with anywhere between $500 - $3,000 in cash on me. Banks were closed, and locking it in the building -- With a monitored alarm system -- not more than 2 miles from the fuzz -- just didn't work out because we got robbed (after hours break in).

I thought it was because of the absurd assumption that all internet cafes were nothing more than casinos in disguise, set up for the sole purpose of offering and profiting from illegal gambling. The ban most likely includes all computers on purpose, since any computer capable of playing any sort of game for money is an illegal gambling device, in their minds...no other purpose or use of these devices exists that is more important or more used than the purpose they are trying to end.

The bottles should be sterile. You can get bottle sterilizer at any home brew shop. If not, just wash well & rinse well.

Or keep your eyes open for yard sales (or ebay), where someone might be selling an electric steam baby bottle sterilizer.  ;)

Oh man!  I remember the Entemann's Cheese Cakes!!!  I used to get them on every grocery shopping trip and had it with coffee in the morning and after supper.  Didn't know they stopped making them though, just thought the grocery store stopped carrying them for some reason.  They were excellent.....and very rich.

They still make the Deluxe French Cheese Cake, but it is considered a seasonal item.

I remember the pineapple upside-down cheesecake, from when I was a kid. I have never tasted a cheesecake quite like that one in my entire adult life.

Do you have any idea how much chocolate fudge cake one had to eat to get 6 of these mugs for "free"? (they are worth about $15.00 each, today)

Also, it's probably not popular enough for people to pass around much. (People are pretty lazy.) It was an in-depth analysis of dichotomous concepts and the logical consequences of them with data and examples to back it up. Not really the kind of thing that most people find exciting or fun. There are pics of cute kittens and puppies to be viewed out there, and only so much time... ;)

The site was off the beaten path too, which only exacerbates the problem. i.e. Smaller search engines are less likely to have encountered it.

Don't underestimate the friendfeed userbase. They are not a bunch of mindless boneheads that have nothing better to do than look at kitties all day. It ain't Facebook.

And as far as "smaller search engines" go, can you name one that can still search saved bookmarks from Ma.gnolia? How about comments from Backtype? If a friendfeed user connected their account and imported their data from those accounts back when those services still existed, it still exists in the friendfeed database, acting almost as the only backup, in some cases. And friendfeed users will go to great lengths to import their data from everywhere, including places where it takes a great deal of effort and work to do so.

If I had some real subject keywords to work with and not vague concepts, I could attempt the search for you. A search for "dichotomous concepts" didn't turn up much of anything.

I lost the link for an essay/article, and wanted to find it again. It *was* easy to find through Google before. Not so much now - it's gone from the results. No matter how I try, I cannot find it.

Uh oh! We have a Return of Renny Challenge!
There are few forces (except maybe ex-girls!) as mad as DC members Scorned! So what was the article! First three to find it get Thank-You mentions from Renny!

Because if Snowden taught us anything, it is that when you're stumped, you just Give It To The Interwebs, and they will look for you as a favor!

 8)

How recent was it? Because if you have trouble finding something, and it's the sort of thing people would talk about and share (even if it is considered subversive), perhaps you are searching in the wrong place. Perhaps searching Friendfeed for references to it would work better. (and I am subscribed to a number of people there that choose to keep their posts private, so they would be included in my search results.)

And Friendfeed has an advanced search like no other!

Living Room / Re: Adblock Plus Letting Ads By

We could take a lesson from the ad companies and pay to have the ads blocked. Choose a software with an actual business model that doesn't include accepting bribes from ad companies...perhaps Ad Muncher, which will work with any browser (without a plugin), any desktop RSS reader, any non-browser software that pulls in ad banners from an external source.
It's more than a little unfair, to characterize your remarks very leniently, to insinuate that the developer of Adblock Plus is taking bribes from ad companies. A bribe is something of value given to a person with the intention of inducing him to act contrary to his moral obligations or to refrain from acting in a way that he is morally obliged to act. Please explain to us how it can be justly suggested that the developer of Adblock Plus is accepting bribes.
-CobbleHillGuy (July 09, 2013, 06:40 PM)

I am not sure what else to call it when the developer of a free ad blocker accepts money from advertisers, to not block their ads.

If the developer of a free antivirus application made its money the same way, and accepted cash to treat certain malware in the same way that Adblock Plus has treated certain ads, would it be much different?

Living Room / Re: DonationCoder Recipe Sharing Thread

My daughter contacted me on Facebook, from her boyfriend's house, needing this recipe. And since I had typed it in the box for her, I figured I'd copy & paste it here, too. This is the perfect base recipe, ready for altering in creative ways.

Fat Free Banana Bread (no eggs or milk, so it's also vegan)

  • 6 bananas
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla

1. Preheat oven to 350F. (hopefully, you have tested the oven with a thermometer, by now, for accuracy)
2. Mash the bananas and sugar together.
3. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
4. Stir in the banana mixture and the vanilla.
5. When thoroughly blended, pour into an ungreased non-stick loaf pan and bake about 1 hour.
6. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan.

Now, how to alter this...

Make it with the bananas first, so you know what the consistency of the batter should be. Replace the bananas with 2 cups of any pureed fruit and add the appropriate spices. You can even use 4 of those 4oz jars of baby food fruits, if you don't feel like pureeing them yourself (mix and match, have fun with it).

  • Apple cinnamon bread - 2 cups of chunky apple sauce and a whole lot of cinnamon
  • Oatmeal bread - 2 cups of cooked, cooled oatmeal (handful of raisins optional)
  • Apple cinnamon oatmeal bread - double the recipe and add both of the above - makes 2 loaves
  • Pumpkin bread - 2 cups pureed pumpkin and the same spices needed to make pumpkin pie
  • Strawberry banana bread - 3 bananas and 1 cup of pureed strawberries
  • Chocolate bread - 2 cups cooked, cooled oatmeal and some cocoa (may need extra sugar)
  • Blueberry bread - 2 cups pureed blueberries and some extra whole ones
  • Peach bread - 2 cups pureed peaches (canned or fresh)
  • Mixed fruit bread - 2 cups of drained and pureed fruit cocktail, with an additional .5 cup of unpureed fruit.
  • Mango papaya bread - 1 cup of pureed mango, and 1 cup of pureed papaya.
  • Pina Colada bread - 2 cups of pureed pineapple and some shredded coconut

Just use your imagination and whatever you have on hand. If your batter comes out a bit thick with some of these substitutions, add a little water to thin it down. You might even want to take an adventure into using some pureed, cooked vegetables, such as carrots or sweet potatoes.

At this point, you know what would make the US look really bad? If something horrible happened to him. Even if the US had nothing to do with it, nobody would ever believe that.

So, the US better hope if they have no plans on bring down whatever plane he might decide to fly on, that nobody else does, either...or that the flight doesn't meet with some other sort of actual accident, bad weather, engine malfunction, pilot error, crazy guy trying to impress a celebrity crush, etc.

Well, I don't know about Miami, but all the supermarkets around here (in NJ) sell it, at least that flavor.

What I can't find anywhere is the boysenberry, which was always one of my favorites. I haven't been able to find that one for years. And even though it's listed as an available flavor on the product info page for Fruit on the Bottom,  their site doesn't even offer an option to locate a store that sells that flavor.
