try the new beta official release:

v3.04.01 - Apr 12, 2012
  • [BugFix] Panel height for resizable bottom info panel was not being saved/restored between runs.
  • [Feature] Selection (marching ants) is now shown live in the bottom left zoom panel (cursor location is now shown more clearly too).
  • [BugFix] Dirty files are saved prior to executing a zupload action (ensures you dont upload a file that has changed but not been saved yet).
  • [Feature] Added cancel button in options to abandon any changes made in options dialog.
  • [Feature] Installer now has checkbox to start-with-windows (unchecked by default); you can use /MERGETASKS="startforall" if you want to enable this by default during install.
  • [Feature] You can now use alt+arrows to nudge upper left corner of selection (use shift+arrows to nudge bottom right corner, plain arrows to move selection box, and ctrl+arrows to adjust both corners).
  • [Feature] Color of pixel under cursor is now shown on statusbar menu toolbar; hit Ctrl+Alt+B in main window to copy it to cursor (or use alt+E to choose copy color from Edit menu).
  • [MajorFeature] When performing a selected-region capture you can now see a zoomed inset window showing magnified pixel details and precise selection crosshairs; see options for control over the zoom magnification and panel size, and to disable.
  • [Feature] You can now move the cursor icon to be captured when performing a selected-region capture; just hit the C key to move it under the mouse.  You can even use this to ADD the cursor if you do not have "capture cursor" mode enabled by default.
  • [Feature] In selected-region capture you can hit the spacebar to reset the starting selection box position (escape cancels).
  • [MinorFeature] Option added to revert to old small crosshairs in selection-region capture mode.

Working on new update that will be uploaded before end of weekend.  Among the improvements is an improved zoom panel and color info in status bar:

This is an old (but new to me) 2008 article the science of memorization and the software tool SuperMemo which tries to remind you of information you are trying to remember, at the scientifically optimal delays.  DC member ewemoa tipped me off to it.

I particularly enjoyed this paragraph:

"The most popular learning systems sold today — for instance, foreign language software like Rosetta Stone — cheerfully defy every one of the psychologists' warnings. With its constant feedback and easily accessible clues, Rosetta Stone brilliantly creates a sensation of progress. "Go to Amazon and look at the reviews," says Greg Keim, Rosetta Stone's CTO, when I ask him what evidence he has that people are really remembering what they learn. "That is as objective as you can get in terms of a user's sense of achievement." The sole problem here, from the psychologists' perspective, is that the user's sense of achievement is exactly what we should most distrust."

I think a very good solution for the budget conscious would simply be a reasonable quality usb headset with built-in microphone and make sure to position the mic correctly so you aren't blowing air into it.  For $30 bucks or so and you wouldn't need a new sound card.  I think that would be a good first step.

I would just go to amazon.com search for usb headset with microphone, and look for 5 star rated items.

DCISV is one of the additional experimental domains we set up on our the server -- it hosts the redmine project management system we use for projects (and make available for member projects);  it's on it's own virtual machine for security reasons.

On thing that Renegade didn't mention, but I know he can talk about, is the ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL issue of having a good microphone.

It is painful to listen to someone who has recorded with a bad microphone, and nothing will send people away faster.

I wrote a couple of new pages on the wiki to try to do a better job of explaining what YUMPS actually is (and is not), since I know it's confusing.

Does this help? https://redmine.dcis...ms2/wiki/WhatIsYumps

At the bottom of that page you will also find a link to a new page on why YUMPS might not be what you want: https://redmine.dcis.../wiki/YumpsNotForYou

Perhaps a good way to phrases this is: does anyone have any suggestions for tools/software and just general guidance for someone who wants to sell digital media content like audio or video recordings / podcasting.

Beautiful looking dog, Tinman. I'm sorry for your loss.

I recently had a problem with my pc that i managed to recover from, but it's once again reminded me that it may be asking for serious trouble to put off a request to reboot your computer.

You know the drill -- you run a windows update, or you install or uninstall some software, and you get the dialog saying something like "Windows needs to restart" with buttons to restart now, or do it manually later:
restart-updates-Windows8.png

Now I don't know about you but I often click the button labeled for "I'll do it later myself", and tell myself i'll do it in just a minute.

But then time flies and I forget, and don't get around to rebooting for quite some time.

I'm here to tell you that this is really playing with fire and could come back to bite you badly.

The problem is that when windows wants to reboot to finish installing or uninstalling stuff, it has created entries in your registry to do operations like delete directories, replace files, etc.

And if you postpone rebooting, and then do something that could interefere with these operations (like deleting temporary files, etc.), you could be in for a world of pain -- and sometimes you might not even realize you are doing things that would conflict with these reboot-enabled-operations.

I think in general it's also dangerous because when you make a change that requires a reboot, it's probably a very good idea indeed to make sure they didn't change anything that cause you to have problems booting -- rather than postponing the discovery until 10 different things are installed.

Anyway just my 2 cents -- when windows wants to reboot, let it reboot without much delay.

is there already a discussion somewhere about the Wordpress software directory thingy?

We are working on the CMS move of DC now -- immediately after that we will begin with a better software repository, and the revival of the DonationCoder columnist/bloggers idea.  Stephen found a pretty good software repository software system but it feels a little overcomplicated to me so I'm still looking.

Tell you what, I'll create a sub-section of the forum where we can discuss the cms move. standby.

Living Room / Kid's homemade cardboard carnival arcade (video)
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2012, 12:59 PM »
Fun video of a kid with a passion for making his own carnival games, who is surprised by a flashmob of supportive fans.

Caine Monroy is a 9-year old boy who spent his summer vacation building an elaborate DIY cardboard arcade in his dad’s used auto parts store.

Caine dreamed of the day he would have lots of customers visit his arcade, and he spent months preparing everything, perfecting the game design, making displays for the prizes, designing elaborate security systems, and hand labeling paper-lunch-gift-bags. However, his dad’s autoparts store (located in an industrial part of East LA) gets almost zero foot traffic, so Caine’s chances of getting a customer were very small, and the few walk in customers that came through were always in too much of a hurry to get their auto part to play Caine’s Arcade. But Caine never gave up.

Ok I have set the final final goal of the fundraiser, to $7,000.  We've already exceeded our expectations so whether we reach that or not means nothing -- but I thought we might as well set it now to something that we have to stretch for.
