I forget who I talked to about BackBlaze, but there were two things I wasn't happy about:
1. That BackBlaze tries to backup EVERYTHING on your pc and you have to work to exclude stuff.
2. This: "Backblaze will keep versions of a file that changes for up to 30 days. However, Backblaze is not designed as an additional storage system when you run out of space. Backblaze mirrors your drive. If you delete your data, it will be deleted from Backblaze after 30 days."

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Hotkey commnads via icons
« Last post by mouser on April 16, 2012, 01:37 AM »
The ability to simulate hotkeys when pushing a button has now been added to LaunchBar Commander 1.32.01.
It restores the last active window and so can be used to send keys to that window and even paste specific text into it.
11453
New release:

v1.132.01 - April 15, 2012
  • [Feature] You can now drop urls and url shotcuts onto items (like browsers) that accept them, in the same way you can drop files onto items that accept files.
  • [Feature] You can now drop urls and url shortcutes onto an empty space to create new items to launch those urls (just like when dropping files)
  • [MajorFeature] New node type: Paste Text/SendKey simulator -- you can paste preset text into last active window, or simulate the pressing of global hotkeys (function keys, contrl/alt/shift etc).  Supports both Ctrl+V use for fast pasting large block of text, or one-by-one character simulation which can support virtual keys and can work in any target window (even a dos box).
  • [MajorFeature] You can now use the virtual commands "paste" and "sendkeys" in menus built from text files, plugins, or commandline output.  This makes it fairly easy to use LBC to show a large menu (stored in a plain text file) of things to past into the active window.
  • [Feature] New node type for MenuContents from File -- which allows you to specify a text file whose contents will be used to build menu dynamically.  This feature was actually already possible using the MenuContents from Commandline node by specifying a .txt file, and could be used by .lbctool files to support plugin-like use of text file menus, however the new node type also allows you to manually specify some menu content text directly in the node configuration itself.  I don't recommend using this for large menus but for quickie stuff and testing it can be useful.
  • [Feature] Portable zip now uses ConfigDir_Default.ini which is overridden by the presence of a ConfigDir.ini file, so users unpacking the contents won't overwrite any custom ConfigDir.ini  they may have.

A couple of significant updates here that work well together.

You can now create nodes (buttons, menu items) that paste text into the last active window -- or simulate global hotkey pressing (like function keys, ctrl+alt+shift, etc.); this may be useful in using buttons to trigger events on your pc that you normally have to use a keyboard for.

You can now also easily use dynamic submenus whose structure is determined by the contents of a text file; this works identically to the way commandline (plugin) tools worked; such structures can specify nested menus, custom captions, custom icons.  These text-based menus can make use of the new paste text / sendkeys stuff, so it would be fairly easy to create a large nested menu of items to paste into the current document, and bring this up from the dock bar or via a popup menu tied to a hotkey.  You can actually specify the menu text DIRECTLY within the FileContents node so you dont even have to use a separate text file -- perfect for quickie testing.

Keep in mind these are fairly advanced features that the overwhelming majority of people will not have use for!

CrashPlan was the best I found but I simply could not get over the insane memory use issues, so i dropped it after my 30 day trial.  However I may try it again at some point.

We are back to normal now.  Thanks to gothic's help.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Dropped Files
« Last post by mouser on April 14, 2012, 10:25 PM »
actually the problem here is simpler -- the restrictions on dropping files are not obeyed at all; all items are treated as if they can accept dropped files. i am hiding that tap for now since it serves no purpose, and i'm not really sure it's needed.

I don't know if it is a bug or not, but it seems setting one node to accept one file is setting all other nodes to the same setting.
I added dreamweaver and other adobe programs to my dock and currently all are set to don't accept files.
But dropping a .txt is opening dreamweaver and for testing also premiere.
I see that i can set filters, but they are useless when dropping is set to not allow, but do so.

[edit] for me it is a bug.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capture cursor?
« Last post by mouser on April 14, 2012, 02:47 PM »
To let the cat out of the bag -- now when you trigger a region capture, the cursor is shown where it was when you initiated the capture -- BUT, and here's the nice part -- you can hit the C key at any time to move it to be under the current position of the mouse. You can even use this to add the cursor when you don't have it set by default to capture.
11464
And for those who like to do precise cropping after the capture, from within the Screenshot Captor interface, comes this new screencast video, teaching you how to use keyboard shortcuts to nudge the selection in different ways:

One of the really wonderful things about the site, and I wish this was a lesson i had learned in my real life -- and i beg all of you younger folk to absorb it, is that DC is "Built to live within its means".

That is -- the only fixed expense of DC is the website hosting costs -- and that is inevitably correlated with donations.. So that if donations dropped precipitously at some point, we wouldn't need the bandwidth and could shift to a cheaper host.  Outside of that, every donation is just a wonderful bonus, and the site can run forever.
11468
I don't have a chart, but for the curious, there have been a total of 363 donations to the fundraiser.
That puts the average donation at a littler under $20.
Highest donation was $200, lowest was 1 penny.

I think the story/lesson of DC is what it's always been -- it's in the eye of the beholder.

If you think about the millions of downloads of the software every year, or the kickstarter or indiebundle things we read about, then 363 people choosing to donate during a two-week fundraiser may not look that great.

But on the other hand if you think of it in the context of software actually being supported by voluntary donations from the user base, i think we can hold our heads high and be proud -- it's a very rare thing to get any donations at all.  It's a nice feeling to be appreciated and supported but most of all it's just wonderful to be around people who are interesting and inspiring and fun.  I think there is a lot to be said for staying small and personal, and that's how we like it.
11469
No worries, splitting of a topic is just a good solution when we have two long discussions on different topics in one thread.  Splitting it just makes it easier for people to talk on either issue.
11470
Heads up: I'm going to split this discussion of donations off into a separate thread from the newsletter.

Living Room / CamelCamelCamel: Nice Amazon Price Watcher
« Last post by mouser on April 14, 2012, 10:15 AM »
I'm not sure why there isn't a post about this already -- it's not something new and I've had it installed for quite a while.. Surely it's been mentioned before on DC, but I can't find it.

CamelCamelCamel is a free tool which can show you charts of the prices of items on Amazon.com (and now also NewEgg, BestBuy, and others.).  There is a plugin for FireFox and probably for other browsers too.  It will show you a nice chart of price over time, including the amazon.com official price and the best used price as well.

I think it's as a plugin that this really shines, especially if you do a lot of browsing on Amazon.com.

It will also let you create notifications so that you are emailed if the price ever drops below your target.

This tool is especially useful and fascinating for a site like Amazon, because Amazon has a very aggressive and experimental pricing system that is CONSTANTLY fluctuating the prices of items to find out how it effects behavior.

If you didn't know that already, make sure you absorb it now: The price of any item on Amazon.com is likely to change dramatically from day to day.  And with this tool (and there are alternatives that are similar to it) -- you can see what the high/low/average price is of the item you are looking at compared to the current price.

Highly recommended, easy to use, free, and a funny about page -- I wouldn't shop amazon without it.

Quick note: if you downloaded the beta early, please force a redownload; the version info hasn't changed since the beta but i fixed a couple of minor things.
11473
New version with quite a few fixes and some big improvements:

v3.04.01 - Apr 12, 2012
  • [BugFix] Panel height for resizable bottom info panel was not being saved/restored between runs.
  • [Feature] Selection (marching ants) is now shown live in the bottom left zoom panel (cursor location is now shown more clearly too).
  • [BugFix] Dirty files are saved prior to executing a zupload action (ensures you dont upload a file that has changed but not been saved yet).
  • [Feature] Added cancel button in options to abandon any changes made in options dialog.
  • [Feature] Installer now has checkbox to start-with-windows (unchecked by default); you can use /MERGETASKS="startforall" if you want to enable this by default during install.
  • [Feature] You can now use alt+arrows to nudge upper left corner of selection (use shift+arrows to nudge bottom right corner, plain arrows to move selection box, and ctrl+arrows to adjust both corners).
  • [Feature] Color of pixel under cursor is now shown on statusbar menu toolbar; hit Ctrl+Alt+B in main window to copy it to cursor (or use alt+E to choose copy color from Edit menu).
  • [MajorFeature] When performing a selected-region capture you can now see a zoomed inset window showing magnified pixel details and precise selection crosshairs; see options for control over the zoom magnification and panel size, and to disable.
  • [Feature] You can now move the cursor icon to be captured when performing a selected-region capture; just hit the C key to move it under the mouse.  You can even use this to ADD the cursor if you do not have "capture cursor" mode enabled by default.
  • [Feature] In selected-region capture you can hit the spacebar to reset the starting selection box position (escape cancels).
  • [MinorFeature] Option added to revert to old small crosshairs in selection-region capture mode.
  • [BugFix] Using the MoveTo.. menu item to browse to a folder already on the MoveTo list would result in duplicate directories being added.

I will have another update in not too long as well.

Demonstration of the new zoom/magnification panel in selected region capture mode.

This feature has been requested several times, most notably by Samer at freewaregenius.com.

The demonstration also shows how to place the cursor where you want it during selected region capture.
