The idea of making a special forum section specifically for moving threads that might otherwise be disruptive elsewhere is not a bad idea at all..

My feeling in general is that the site benefits greatly from having only two really big general purpose sections (Living Room and Software) where most of our conversation takes place.  I think that helps a lot in keeping us tight as a community.  I am not a fan of breaking up the site into little enclaves.

But having a section where topics could be MOVED if they venture too much into politics/religion might be a better solution than asking people to stop talking about them if they start to feel distracting.  It would also make it possible for people to more easily ignore that section if they don't want to be bothered with it.  I don't think we would need to have it so that you had to request to get into such a section -- it would be enough that it was a bit more out of the way than the main sections..

Screenshot Captor / Re: SSC auto delete files ...?

There is no auto-deleting function in Screenshot Captor; something else must be going on.

Would I be advised to install Python2 for now and update in the future when everyone else does the same?!

That is the conclusion that I reached.

ps.
I wonder if there are any other examples of such a major language update that has been such a failure in terms of adoption as Python3..  It's a pretty severe lesson about the power of backward compatibility and the cost to be paid if you deviate from it.

I agree that you should not run any repair windows or severe fixit tools for something like this.  The suggestion to look at autoruns and programs configured to run at boot time is your best bet i think.  Look for a line that is trying to run diskeeper on windows bootup even though you've uninstalled it.

i can see why that might be a nice feature.. i'll have to think about how easy it would be to do.

It's probably not a virus, so don't get scared.  But do see if you can track down what it is.

One request, could you make the special key instructions textarea autosize?
oops, yes will do.

Would it be wrong for me to suggest this thread started off as being borderline appropriate for DC and is only becoming more so..   It's not that these discussions aren't valuable to have, just a question of whether they are most appropriate for this forum..  Of course there is great latitude for going off topic in the Living room section, but still..

Great to see you making use of the new sendkeys function in LBC! Makes me happy I added it.

I will still check into the problem when launching the commandline version via LBC and it losing focus.  What I suspect is that LBC is trying to change focus to the newly launched program, but since it exists after triggering the existing running FARR, you get the result of no window having focus.

There are some posts on the web talking about tricks to force java apps to let go of memory or use less memory.

While Wraith has a point -- it may actually make more sense than one might think to try to trick a java app into using less memory -- precisely because, unlike 99.9999% of applications, it seems that the Java runtime does explicitly make some dynamic decisions about how much memory to claim and when to release it.  Which means that if you can convince Java that it shouldn't be using so much of your system memory, and perform garbage collection more frequently, you *may* be able to keep it in check.  That's assuming that the memory use problems of CrashPlan aren't due to memory leaks in the code..

Currently i do simply start farr with -show, but i always have to click on farr first in order to type in my search query.

That sounds like a bug -- i'm not sure why you should have to click on it to start typing -- sounds like possibly an oversight on my part.
Does it have the same behavior no matter how you launch it from a dos box or is it only when you launch it from LBC that it does not get focus?

Gridmove is probably what you are thinking of.

No need to explicitly "close" a discussion.. when there is nothing more to talk about people will simply stop replying :)

However, one thing that hasn't been said yet is that you can add your own custom hotkeys to trigger FARR in different ways.

So you might want to consider setting a new hotkey in the FARR options that is more convenient for you to type on your laptop keyboard.

DcUpdater / Re: Update frequency
« Last post by mouser on April 18, 2012, 02:11 AM »
Do you have Find and Run Robot installed? That's my only program that tries to use DcUpdater to check for updates regularly; you can change the frequency of checks and even disable them completely from the Find and Run Robot options.

I have nothing to compare it to, but it still seems pretty darn impressive.

Welcome to the site, evildeepblue!

I'm afraid it doesn't have the ability to switch languages.

It is a feature I have considered adding, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm glad that solves the problem for you.. but now I still have to figure out why this is failing for some people and if i've made a mistake making it the new default.

Just a quick illustration of how to use the new "Menu from File Contents" node, in addition to the new paste and sendkeys options.

Let's have a look at the new test node i added:

Screenshot - 4_16_2012 , 1_35_37 PM.png

Note that I specified my menu contents directly in the node configuration -- but could have combined that with an external text file.  The syntax for the menu specification can be found in the documentation; it includes the ability to use custom captions (shown in example above), but also custom icons, and nested menus.

And of course you can link to programs, documents, folders, or urls as the menu items (not just paste commands!)

The paste and sendkeys items you see will send text to the last active window, in different ways that may be suitable for different targets; in general paste works on plain text and is fastest (uses the clipboard); sendkeys can simulate any keypresses.

Can you try messing with the other launch options in the Launching Files tab, notably the "Disable WOW64 redirection" checkbox, since that is the thing that's really new, and the "use file helper" checkbox.
