As you guys know we occasionally send out DC mugs to members, like these:
3dcmugs.jpg

It would be nice to have a couple more designs for different purposes, like a mug/t-shirt design for programmers who release a bunch of Coding Snack tools.  There might be other occasions that would be nice to honor as well (graduation? military service?).

I'm just posting this in case any DC members who are artists stumble across this and want to give it a shot.. I know we are all faithful to our beloved DC member Nudone and his Cody artwork, but I know he wouldn't mind if we had some alternative designs just to mix things up.

In general, with all my apps the migration strategy works like this:

  • 1. Install the application on your new machine.
  • 2. Run the program once to create the settings files in the right places.
  • 3. Exit program and copy your old settings files over the new ones*.
  • * On winXP your settings files will be in the same directory as the program; on Win7 your settings files will be in Documents\DonationCoder\APPNAME
11303
On Win7 that's where the settings should be; so if you are moving from a winxp (or portable install) to win7 and want to preserve your settings, you would copy the settings ini files from the old program files directory to the new Documents\DonationCoder\APPNAME directory (and remove the old configdir.ini file if you manually copied it over and its trying to tell the app to save its settings in the win7 program files directory).

Now that is some impressive science fiction setup.. Pretty cool stuff!
Judging from those screens it looks like you have set up a command base to communicate with (or coordinate an attack on) some alien invaders.

Screenshot Captor / Re: SSC 3.03 hangs on some screen capture attempts

SSC doesn't really have a concept of CLEARING the window -- it always wants to show the last selected/captured screenshot.
I understand that that might seem a bit counter-intuitive, but I can't think of a reason why one would benefit from clearing the window.
But I'm open to being convinced that it should, if someone has a real reason why such a feature would be useful within SC.

I saw what you did there.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Not capturing menus
« Last post by mouser on May 28, 2012, 09:48 PM »
Maybe the answer is don't use region select mode when trying to capture menus?

Or if you want to capture a bunch of the same regions with different menus, do a region capture first, then with each menu trigger a repeat-region capture, which doesn't require interaction so should capture the menus (as long as you dont use an ALT press in your hotkey).

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Webcam Tips - Reducing Blur
« Last post by mouser on May 28, 2012, 08:37 PM »
If you use your webcam with its default control panel settings, you are likely to see some real bluriness on high motion.

To fix this, you need to go to your webcam controlpanel/property page, and disable automatic exposure and lighting, and manually set a much lower exposure (you can crank up the gain or brightness to compensate).  This is equivalent to increasing the shutter speed on a camera.

You can get access to this page from within FlipSuite by going to Video/Capture options, then "Video Device Settings" tab, then selecting "Custom video device driver settings" from the Show Property Sheet combo box.

Ideally you should have some good bright lighting to compensate.

ps.
The Logitech HD C920 gives quite good results.

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: 1-action Unzip
« Last post by mouser on May 28, 2012, 11:46 AM »
Adding my 2 cents to the issue.  The crux of the dilemma as I see it is that the risks are asymmetrical.  That is:

If you unpack into a newly created subfolder.. The worst case scenario is simply that the user has to go into the subdirectory to move them out.  If they want to "undo" the unzip operation, they just delete the new subfolder.

But if you unpack 500 files into the top-level directory where the zip is, the worst case scenario might be pretty damn bad -- it might mean you've dumped 500 files in with a whole bunch of other files and the user has no easy way to see which files are newly unpacked vs which were already there.  If they want to "undo" the operation they are screwed.

I think for this reason, the prudent thing for quick unzipping where the user hasnt explicitly right clicked and said to unpack into root of a specific directory, is to always create a new subdirectory.

I'm going to move this to the Developer's Corner area.

If you permit me to make a suggestion:  It would be useful to start out a post like this with a very clear and concise paragraph summarizing what you are wanting, and then go into the much longer story.

I try to make myself do this because I have a tendency to want to explain things in a long drawn out "story" form, and I try to force myself to put an executive summary first, for those who either won't read the whole thing, or will get lost along the way.  There is an old suggestion given to speakers "First tell them what you are going to tell them, then tell them, then tell them what you told them."

I know this is long overdue, but just a heads up that i have finished adding a bunch of additional layout options that will work with printer/cutters like this and others that do page-by-page cutting/stacking.  I will be uploading the new version shortly.

Hopefully you can see from this screenshot (click on it to enlarge) that the page numbers are exactly as you diagrammed they should be.  And you'll notice that the new option that enabled this was "Strip Cutting Stacks: Horizontal"; there are more options as well that can be used with different kinds of cutters that might stack differently.

please remember to make your topic subject titles informative so people can:
  • find things when they go searching
  • avoid having to click and read a thread just to find out what it's about.

To help me prioritize this, can I ask if anyone else has use for such functionality?

DesktopCoral / Re: Ok, I give up
« Last post by mouser on May 25, 2012, 10:44 PM »
Sorry for the lack of response, I guess that's my fault.  Desktop Coral doesn't really let you put stuff in the dock -- it just reserves the space on the desktop for special programs that draw graphics directly into an area.  So it really has a very specialized use.

i didn't know that SC couldn't take images of some windows.. can other win7 users confirm this? or is it something that some other security tool is blocking?

Screenshot Captor / Re: minicap autoscroll not working with Outlook
« Last post by mouser on May 25, 2012, 09:20 PM »
not in the same way minicap can, and a little helper, but still, see if screenshot captor works.. if so i might at least consider adding the scrolling capture functions from SC into minicap..
11320
And do i understand that in all of these cases where SC grabs the focus -- you would prefer it behave exactly as it is behaving, EXCEPT that SC should not grab focus, yes?

Screenshot Captor / Re: mincap as com/net component
« Last post by mouser on May 25, 2012, 04:32 PM »
Minicap is built using C++ Builder; it could be made as a DLL.  But I don't think the benefits of that over just using it as a commandline tool are likely to be worth it.
11322
So to confirm, SC is showing on screen when you perform the capture, and then jumps to front after the capture, right?

It sounds like a bug and I think I can reproduce it.. It only happens if the SC window is showing at the time of capture.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Zupload change to ShareX
« Last post by mouser on May 25, 2012, 02:25 PM »
ShareX and ZUploader are wonderful tools, but I have to say that the hotkey registering and no easy way to uncheck the use of hotkeys, and similar things, makes this tool harder and harder to use as a helper.. If anyone has any other uploader tools they would like to suggest as a better match for use with SC let me know.

New version of SC will be released in a day or so with new links to ShareX, and more generic explanation of using any Uploader tool with SC.

Thanks for the report Elv12!

I will update Screenshot Captor; until then i *think* you can solve this by going to the "Screenshot Folder and Tools" tab in options and under "Custom Uploader Tool" browse to the ShareX exe.
