Possibly Unrelated Note:
What all my wordiness is saying is that when you own an Nvidia graphics card and experience problems it doesn't necessarily mean you need a new card (Unless you have one of the hardware-defective 8x00 cards). All problems mean is that you need to use a different driver...maybe a beta driver...maybe a driver 1 or 2 revisions behind or ahead of the one you are using now. Experiment and you'll almost always find a fix to the problem without having to lay out any money or swap any hardware.

I only install Nvidia's latest officially released driver, and my only deviations from that are if my computer's graphics performance drops severely or I start seeing sudden nvdisp.dll crashes; in that case I drop back to the last good driver. Unless a really bad driver is installed I still don’t see why a program should balk at having an Nvidia card. And remember, I didn't hear anything like that from IDimager - I just mentioned it because I did get such excuses a few years ago from another developer. And finally I have not had any similar issues with any other apps with my current driver. Just sayin'.

Thank you.

Uninstall/reinstall?

That's probably something I'll try, but I would really like to get a response from the developer before trying anything. I would think that he would want to get some info from me first, like logs, settings, etc. for diagnostic purposes. That is if he is interested in helping at all - which I am starting to doubt unfortunately.

Does it use .NET or anything?

- Oshyan

Not sure but I know I have .NET 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x installed. Various apps I use have requirements for one of those and thus all three needed to be installed at some point. It would be unusual for a program to need a prerequisite like a certain version of .NET or other platform and not check for it or install it first. At least that has been my experience with the software I use; and I use a lot of it!

Possibly Unrelated Note: In the past I have had a couple of developers tell me that their apps always have difficulties rendering properly on computers with Nvidia graphics cards and that I should try changing out my card for another brand because of that. At which point I told both of them to go sh*t in their hats! Nvidia cards are in more computers than any other brand and my card (along with the last two I have used) is considered a "gaming" graphics card and has the capabilities for pretty extreme 3D rendering and hardware acceleration. (Though I have all that set for "Normal"), so an Nvidia card should be able to handle just about any program I can throw at it. If a developer must resort to specifying which specific hardware component brands to use then I don’t need to use that particular software! More often some software apps have difficulties when related Nvidia software is installed, like the Nvidia Control Panel and their "Forceware" stuff. I am not using any of those for that reason.

Just a thought...

Thanks!

from j-mac's screenshots

You've prompted me to look at them again.

First noticing that the 2nd box above the column headers is empty. It's the filter box & I don't know how to get it empty. When I have no filter chosen, it says No Filter. Maybe it would be empty if I had never clicked on it. Can't remember that far back.

Second, the columns far to the right. The last of those is the repeat of the File Name. But this is only partly showing even though the scroll bar is as far to the right as it can go. This must be a display problem of some sort. Could be IDI - sometimes it can take a while to get the display completely organised when you change view; and yours seems to go very slowly quite often (eg. as in changing style). The next two to its left are presumably Bookmarked and In-Sync. That means you are missing 8 columns. I assume that the Column titles for the 3 far right columns you do have aren't showing either?

Maybe, it has got stuck drawing the window.

Dormouse,

Actually I might have all the columns; if I scroll across all the way, bit by bit, I can see various other columns. Two specific problems, though: 1) No column headers, even above each column. Running my mouse across there doesn’t help; pointing and dragging does nothing so it isn't just that the separator lines are hidden - the headers are not there. 2) When I scroll horizontally IDI uses ~50% CPU resources, and there is a long lag between moving the scrollbar and the window moving - a long lag. Like three to five minutes to move a half inch or less.

I'll send in another support request and see if I get any reply this time...

Thank you.

Java - Yes for latest Graphics card driver, no for any alternate shell stuff. No WindowBlinds or anything like that.

I cannot change anything in that column header bar - it doesn’t allow me to find the hidden separators between the columns - I don’t think they are there.

They have to be there somewhere. Unless the Program installation got corrupted by something.

If you haven't already done it, you can:
a) Try using the zoom trick to make all columns visible; that should give you the separators.

Doesn’t work - I cannot get all columns into the view no matter what I set it at.

b) Use the scroll bar to go to the right where the other columns are. When you see the separator for File Name, move it to the left.

This I can do but there are no column headers to drag the edges of - I have tried; nothing allows me to change the column widths.

Thank you.

So there are some "hidden" columns it seems...

Ah yes, I've never had that scroll bar because all my columns were showing. Maybe because that's because I've got a big widescreen monitor.
Another way (usually anyway) of seeing all the columns would be to use the zoom bar at the top right to zoom right out, reducing the amount of the screen that everything is taking.

Ahem.....  24" Widescreen monitor here - can't get that much bigger...

I thought I would try changing the skin, or "style" as they call it, but each time I try the program uses 50%+ CPU and stays that way for over 10 minutes - at which time I kill it. I shouldn’t run into any issues running the program on this box; my specs are noted below:

Falcon Northwest Mach V
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, 2200.0 MHz
4 GB RAM (PC3200 DDR-SDRAM)

OK - here's a clue: Notice the scroll bar at the bottom? Tough to notice with the dark skin. I dragged it all the way to the right and got this:

So there are some "hidden" columns it seems...

Dormouse,

Here's what I see in the Collection Viewer after clicking View>Details:

[attachthumb=#1][/attachthumb]

And here is the "Image Detail" pane at the lower right of the main window that I mentioned in a previous post:

[attachthumb=#2][/attachthumb]

I have to look for hidden columns somewhere I guess...

Thanks!

And that is when I discovered that there is nowhere in the program that shows me the size in pixels; the size that I can easily see in any other image organizer or editor in the world, and even in Explorer. I have asked about it at the forum, I have read and searched their Help file, and I have read all Parts of Mike Buckley's ebook on IDimager 5.

Do you happen to know where/how I can see that info within IDimager?

On the View menu, put it into 'View Details' mode. That gives  a number of columns with simple info including Image Dimensions.

Now see, I am not seeing that here...   On my system that just opens a "Details" pane at the bottom right of the window and that doesn’t show much actual detail at all. And it definitely does not show the image size anywhere.

One other thing I should check: Maybe the columns are too narrow to see or some other problem like that. I have already come across a few similar weird issues in IDimager Pro so far. E.g., double-clicking a thumbnail, as in most image/photo apps, opens a window with a larger view of that image. This worked the first few times I used it but then all of a sudden I was getting what appeared to be a blank window - no image at all showing in it. After I stopped muttering all kinds of unkind words to the program (Yes, I do talk to programs when they drive me to it!) I noticed that the window was actually a "recipe" window; turns out that whenever you open a large image view like this it usually has a recipe sidebar (for lack of a better way to put it) on the right-hand side. Well for whatever reason the blank recipe window (since I have created no recipes) had taken over that whole window, squeezing the actual image window down to about 2 pixels wide. Once I grabbed the left edge of the blank recipe pane with my mouse and drug it over to the right I could see the image. Why did it do that? Who knows - I certainly had not even clicked in the window before, nor dragged any edges around. For some reason IDimager just decided to expand that recipe window over the image window. Maybe something like this is happening to hide the image size column. I'll take a closer look - but I am getting weary of having to look for things that the program decided to hide!

Thanks!

What a rotten image organizer! I have spent so much time trying to work through their endless mazes of toolbars, panes, and menus trying to get the most basic things done with it only to find out that "you can't do that in IDimager".

Just a quick note to say I've only just seen this & will get back to you later today, if it would still be helpful.

I didn't realise you were having any problems - I don't often visit the IDI forums.
Have just had a quick look & the stuff you want to do can be done fairly straightforwardly. Can see all the info you want in IDI; can apply labels to all images in folder by drag and drop.

Dormouse:  You're kidding, aren't you? Why didn't anyone in the forum there say so? IMO the forum for IDimager is not very helpful. The developer doesn’t respond there and other users, well, you see what answers/suggestions I received there. For the record I have about 60% of my images labeled now but it's such a complex process to do what should be a very simple task. Most tasks in IDimager seem to be much more complex than need be. And it does everything at the speed of a watched pot waiting to boil. Though I am still pissed at ACDSee for not creating a Win7-compatible version at least you could do a lot of the same things in ACDSee quicker and without a dozen keystrokes and having 6 panes open to do it all. (Though their latest Pro versions have gotten just as bad with the various panes from what I understand).

There's no getting away from the fact that it is a highly complex prog with lots of options & it is very easy to get lost in it. Surprised you didn't get responses that told you how to what you wanted on the forums..

Unfortunately they have made it complex needlessly in many areas it seems. Category labels and keywords should not be that difficult to assign! And "synchronizing with XMP" is just crazy! Took the program three full days and nights to "sync" my ~20,000 images - and I don’t use the XMP format! But in order to get the basic EXIF details in there apparently it requires me to do this. Again, crazy. Or just stupid.

Worst thing I have run into with IDimager: I cannot see the size of any of my images. That information is nowhere that I can find. I have asked about that in their forum and not gotten any replies. I tried to use the "Move to folder..." feature in the right-click menu but the resultant dialog said it was going to automatically resize the images in order to move them. Why?!?! And there was no way to deselect that - I could change the new size and/or the method used to resize it but I didn't want the damn image resized! So I thought that perhaps the image was too large for the program, that maybe the program has a size limit on images. (Though my images don’t generally exceed about 2272 x 1704 x 24 px).

I guess that you can see I can't really discuss this program right now without getting frustrated all over again! Not worth the aggravation!

Thank you.

Yes, I do have Picasa and have used it since its inception. However Picasa doesn’t quite do what I want to do with my photos.

Yeah, finally figured it out. Disturbing checkout system though. Bits promo says $10.82, Buy Now click takes you to Checkout with Premium pre-selected and an additional year of updates selected. Change all that and fill out form, go to next page and - that damn add'l year of updates is slyly selected yet again.

I bought but I really hate shit like that. Poor behavior IMO.

Thank you.

Hey, anybody know which subscription level the Bits promo covers? I thought it would be the Basic but when clicking on the Buy Now button the checkout page has the Premium version pre-selected.

Ad Muncher is available at Bits today for $10.82.

I have seen Ad Muncher mentioned in a very positive light here by many DC members, so I think that I'll get me a copy of it! Comments about Ad Muncher are welcome to help me know if I am getting a winner - or not.   :) :)

Thanks!

Musubi,

This looks like it hasn’t been updated since February 2007 but it might be worth a try. It claims to pretty much do what you are asking - it puts an icon in the system tray and lets you switch sound cards with one click. I haven't tried it.

Give it a shot and let us know if it worked.

I believe that I have 4 Chrome extensions. I had a couple of others but they didn't do much so I removed them. I have no idea what the heck all the processes are doing or why they are there. I have seen others complaining about this or similar at other forums + Google Groups but no one has any definitive answers; just speculation. As usual Google isn't talking.

Thanks!

- it actually has been corrected to 'recovery' - at least on your link's page.

Yeah, I was reading off the Add-0ns dialog within Firefox itself.

Hey folks, I use an extension called AFOM Addon, "Firefox Memory Leakage Recover Application" - I imagine the developer meant "recovery" instead of "recover". That is working well but of course that is only for the memory-hogging issue. The rest of my rants are still biting me.

I don’t have an answer for you but I would love to see this also. Currently I have to open the Help file or Options to see what the shortcuts are. If it is a program I use a lot I often print out a screen cap of the shortcuts and tape it up somewhere near my monitor for quick reference.

Thanks!

I have been going between Chrome and Firefox lately. I agree with bleh75 that Firefox has become more difficult to use lately - ever since about 3.5 if I had to guess. I do have about 25 extensions installed and there is no way to see if any are causing a problem other than disabling all and turning them back on one by one, which is a real PITA. Plus if the problem is an intermittent one then there is no way to diagnose it.

And I love how asinine the Mozillazine forums have become. I have often said that the best thing about Firefox is the extensions, and the worst thing about Firefox is the extensions. Yet post about a problem at Mozillazine and you get Mods and long-time users telling you that it's naturally the extensions - that they don’t use any extensions. Really? Then what other reason is there to use Firefox? Baloney!

Firefox now starts slow, browses slow, shuts down slow - if at all - and it uses so much memory that it is a definite hog. Although Chrome, while being much faster than Firefox, is an even bigger memory hog. I recently had 9 tabs open in Chrome and the Windows Task Manager showed exactly 30 processes named "Chrome", each taking from 35 to 50 MB of RAM. Crazy!

Opera is looking better and better - if only the developers there weren't so damned elitist.

OK - whining rant all done!   :D

Alright. OK. I'm an idiot. Again. And I am about to ditch IDimager Pro and start looking all over again.

What a rotten image organizer! I have spent so much time trying to work through their endless mazes of toolbars, panes, and menus trying to get the most basic things done with it only to find out that "you can't do that in IDimager". I don’t know, maybe this is the way that professional photogs like to work - if they are totally brainless zombies!

The developer put out this version 5 and it seems that half the regular users are having difficulty with it. And me? Hell, I was lost before I got started.

Maybe it is back to Zoner....

General Software Discussion / Re: Chameleon Task Manager
« Last post by J-Mac on March 20, 2010, 09:52 PM »
Curt,

Just about all alternative task managers have an option to replace the Windows Task Manager and have similar wording to what Evgeni uses there. However it is still presumptive to just auto-replace the WTM. Other apps, like Process Explorer and Anvir Task Manager Pro, offer the option and many users do use it in place of WTM, but I personally like to keep WTM available, like Steven. None I have used has ever replaced WTM on its own. I agree with Steven that this should be optional and not the default behavior.

Thanks!
