^ oh, yes, Thank you for the adware-installing jelly thing! hehe  ;D

Not to worry; I have Abelssoft Keyfinder, so I know the keys in mention.

I was trying to avoid the New Operating System -solution, because of the many (count: "1, 2, many") license key problems there usually will follow for this and that "licensed per machine"-program. Somehow a new operating system often makes the old machine become a new machine, if you ask the third party suppliers' Sales-department.

Maybe the Laptop came with W8 and the owner did a "free downgrade" to W7. Many people did.

I am scheduled to meet him in a week from now, so I will remember to ask him this. Thanks!

The listed files are not installed. But should they be?
I have at least one copy of each on my Windows 8.0 Laptop

According to msdn "Windows API Sets" they are not designed to work on Windows 7.

Maybe 'something' is installed that makes DW confuse my Win 7 for a Win 8 / RT 2012 ?

^ I tried..., but:

2015-2010.gif

so I assumed this couldn't be it.

-----------
I have tested Google's browser; it too will launch, but not go anywhere.
-----------

I forgot to tell that Dependency Walker gave identical results each time I used it to launch Internet Explorer 11, PhotoFiltre Studio X, Sagelight Image Editor, Firefox 23, and Firefox 36. DW was unable to launch any of them, but except from Firefox version 36, they normally don't have any problems.

----------------------
Info:
This 64-bits laptop was given to me "pre-registered" with 32-bits Win 7 PRO installed, without any disc or available key.
And without a disc drive. And only one (1) USB port.

I was very pleased that it also came with Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, which I never have had a copy of before (for longer than a trial). I have a key for MS Office 2003 Standard (and SoftMaker 2012), but I am prepared to go an extra mile or two, to keep MS 2010 Professional.

Which is why I haven't just replaced this 32-bits W7 PRO with the 64-bits Win 7 Home Premium I still have.

Dependency Walker [DW] ... giving these error messages: (see attachment in previous post)

On stackoverflow a user listed the exact same DLLs (as shown in above screenshot), as being named by Dependency Walker as missing. He then installed three OCX files, and voila his problem was gone - even though DW still listed the many DLLs as "missing"! Maybe a coincidence. He never came back to name the OCX files.

http://stackoverflow...-64-bit-dll-problems

dependency walker is telling me that the following DLLs are missing:

    API-MS-WIN-CORE-COM-L1-1-0.DLL
    API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-ERROR-L1-1-0.DLL
    API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-L1-1-0.DLL
    API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-ROBUFFER-L1-1-0.DLL
    API-MS-WIN-CORE-WINRT-STRING-L1-1-0.DLL
    API-MS-WIN-SHCORE-SCALING-L1-1-0.DLL
    DCOMP.DLL

Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
-cmd.exe

But No, I don't have a CD for this one either.
-so this was merely a cmd.exe on the desktop, not during boot.

-thanks, Miles.
However, the problem here is that it's any version younger than version 23 that will launch but not reach the Internet.

---

You could try Dependency Walker and see what differences there are in system requirements between the version that does work and the later ones.

My intention was to have Dependency Walker [DW] open the well-working Firefox 23 and create a "before" report, and then uninstall version 23 and install the not-working version 24 - and have DW run the same test again. That was my intention. To my surprise, DW wouldn't even run Firefox 23, other than giving these error messages:

2015-03-03_DependencyWalk.gif

--------

I know nothing, but I am baffled by this. I was expecting version 23 to run smooth and fast because it was opened and handled by DW, but it didn't open at all! (In DW > "Open..." > C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe), though it runs fine by itself

In the last maybe five years I have purchased at least ten times as many eBooks as paper books. But each and every time I buy an eBook, I get a little frustrated, even angry!, because I know that if it had been a paper book, someone would inherit it after my death, but no-one will be getting the virtual books.

General Software Discussion / CLOX: All The Time in the World
« Last post by Curt on March 01, 2015, 06:39 PM »
eh... was it maybe ten years ago I last heard of Mirage Audio Visual Media and their ("his"?) CLOX? The prices range between $6 and $10, so I probably have a license from many years ago ("Registered users of CLOX from versions 1 to 7 and CLOX 2000 can get CLOX 8 free of charge"!!), I can't recall; my backup is not old enough!

Anyway; after a decade in silence, the company has now launched a new version: CLOX 8
http://mirage-avm.com/mu/clox.htm

All The Time in the World
CLOX is an easy to use world clock app giving both desktop and mobile users analog and digital clocks showing the time in different world time zones

Clox Anywhere

Whilst being a little different from previous versions of CLOX, version 8 continues to provide users with an exceptionally high quality software product at a bargain price. What's more, CLOX is no longer tied to the desktop. The new mobile versions are virtually identical in every way to the new desktop version.

These screen shots were taken from CLOX 8 for Windows but they could just as well be from a small-screen (320x480) mobile phone. The new design means that CLOX 8 will work beautifully on any popular screen type from the smallest smartphones and tablets upwards.

The examples here show just a tiny selection of the countless possible ways to set up CLOX. You can see a few more screenshots here. CLOX 8 can display up to 12 time zones and including up to 10 analog clocks at a time.
CLOX 8 is currently available for Windows 7 & 8, Android 4.4 & 5 and Windows Phone 8. Shop: http://www.mirage-avm.com/store/cart/

Customers are advised to download and try products before purchasing, as refunds are not normally available, once registration codes have been issued.

In my mind, the accompanying animation is not really doing the program a favour:

I wonder what change took place from version 23 to version 24 ?

One change was the introduction of SpiderMonkey 24 JavaScript engine! (Exclamation mark because I all along have said, without KNOWING, there were some "Java problems", and now it seems I may have been right.) Unfortunately I have no idea what to do if it is or if it isn't.

Later, SpiderMonkey 24 was updated to version 31, but that has not helped me.

I've tested versions 36, 35, 3.5.19, 27, 25, 24, 19, 22, and finally 23.01 (which I am keeping). Older than version 24 will run, version 24 and younger will not move an inch out of the box.

I wonder what change took place from version 23 to version 24 ?  :tellme:

this was most interesting, but also confusing.

BIOS date was 24'th of August 2010, so not all that bad.

The confusing is of course why there are so many older dates. Now I am guessing that the previous owner simply made a "Move everything from your old to your new computer"-installation, hence the many 2006 stamps.

hover_autocopy, a small user script that I am looking forward to start using:

https://greasyfork.o.../3487-hover-autocopy
@namespace      hover_autocopy(at)userscript.org
Created    2014-07-21

hover_autocopy
A small icon will prompt up after you selected some text. The selected text will auto copy to clipboard when you move the cursor over the icon.

You'll need a userscript client that supports GM_setClipboard, or it will prompt an alert. (both Greasemonkey & Scriptish support the API)

***********************
I wrote this script because Firefox's copy in contextmenu is very unreliable, it makes my life easier...

modified:
no, hover_autocopy has gone, because the pop-up interfered with my Auto Context which also is a lot more versatile, (but requires forced compatibility ~ and a click).

It might also be worth installing an older version of FF.  Try something that was released in 2009.
***compatibility issues***

***I am typing this in Firefox 3.5.19. It is a very fast browser***

I tried the portable version 35, but it still won't go anywhere, just like any other new Firefox won't. Each one was removed via Revo Uninstaller Pro > Advanced.

So I guess it now is all about testing, how old a Firefox must be, to run on my laptop.

General Software Discussion / Solved: Why won't my laptop run Firefox?
« Last post by Curt on February 25, 2015, 06:00 PM »
Last August I lost my PC and was forced to take this old laptop into use. To my surprise it won't run Firefox, but only Internet Explorer! This is of course not some management restriction, but merely my real life experience; the Mozilla browser will launch but never go anywhere or open any homepage. Or it will launch, but everything takes longer than forever. And I mean several minutes to (not) open a page. Even with low safety settings and without any safety related program being open! SOMETIMES Firefox will open some pages, or simple pages, but not flash or complex pages - but most times it won't go anywhere at all!

Understand that my test results are sparse because I lose patience long before any homepage connection was made.

***Each and every other program that I have installed will connect to the Internet without a problem***

I have not been able to find any security related setting from the previous owner anywhere.
Computer, drivers, flash and everything are fully updated, so to speak; the laptop seems to be from 2009...

It has now been half a year and I have no more ideas about where to go or what to do, except asking YOU!  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / QTTabbar could become my favourite
« Last post by Curt on February 22, 2015, 11:55 AM »
^ me too!   :-[

Actually I am thinking about going back to version 1.5 beta (partly written by another man), because version 1024 not is acting quite like I would like it to. One problem is of course that I am not sure if my settings are 'optimal', or if a checkmark here or there would make it any better. Also I suspect version 1024 is not all stable. On top of this, the software author is Japanese and doesn't seem to care too much if I understand him or not.

Notice that if you BEGIN uninstalling QTTabbar, you will be given the option to REPAIR the installation, instead of uninstalling. Sometimes this is needed.
