General Software Discussion / Re: 12 Windows Explorer Alternatives Compared
« Last post by urlwolf on July 29, 2007, 09:39 PM »
I have abandoned dopus due to outrageous update fees and have happily moved to TC. TC has colors for filetypes and lots of other small features that make me think it's vastly superior to dopus _for me_.

I'll start at the beginning. Thirty days ago I bought a 15" Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa). I have been interested in learning the Mac OS for awhile, and the only way I could really do it would be forcing myself to use it on a daily basis. So I sold my 17" Dell Inspiron e1705 and went all Mac.

I still use PC's on a daily basis at work and to run certain aspects of my life, such as recording my podcast, running my webserver, etc.

The following is a real-life, honest listing of likes and dislikes comparing Windows Vista to Mac OS X.

Maybe evernote would do more of what you want.
And the underlying format is html.

It uses tags, so your idea of a giant outline may not hold.

OneNote does have all the minuses you list.
here are some definite pluses from my POV:
- best outlining (inside a page) ever.
- fast tables
- easy to reorganize and tag items
- keyboard friendly
- images containing text are OCR'ed and can be searched (!). Ideal to paste stuff from an article
- formulas possible (!)
- quick napkin operations, e,.g. 2 + 2 = will produce 4 automatically.
- most flexible "page": point where you want to start writing and it works.
- can save video and record sound (dictation!)
- can attach any file type
- no need to hit save ever
- recognizes handwriting. Ideal with a tablet or a wacom interface

I recently found HateML.
It's pretty cool. it does PHP Automatic syntax checker, debugger and profiler.
It highlighted CSS in a different background color, and other little nice touches.

It even has a MySQL Manager plugin, and it's absolutely free. Give it a try and let me know what you think...

I forgot: it's portable!

General Software Discussion / djvu: an alternative to scanned pdfs?

This seems like a very reasonable thing to have around.
Not sure if anyone has calculated average space savings...

Is anyone using windows live writer beta 2? I have the same exact settings as in beta 1, and it says it cannot connect to my blog (!). There are two options, wordpress and wordpress 2.2+. I have tried them both. Of course, there's no support for free M$ software, right?

If anyone has a pointer on how to solve this, it'd be greatly appreciated. The new spell check is great.

Thanks

I'd say oneNote 2007 has all you need. May take a while to get used to the approach with basically tabs left, right, and ontop, but it is indexable (by MS search live) and you can access info really fast.

music IP mixer is by far the best I have tried. I went Jriver > Mediamonkey > foobar > MusicIP mixer, if this is of any use.
1136
well, just so you know, wizmo hibernate damit doesn't do anything in my system.
I don't feel like reinstalling the OS just to fix this :), but it's getting annoying.
I have 84 processes running, any idea how to pinpoint the culprit?

General Software Discussion / Re: delicious and opera. Integreation
« Last post by urlwolf on July 04, 2007, 01:00 PM »
@Lashiec,

ctrl + H hides my opera. Maybe you have assigned that to some other action?
I don't really get what you are saying. I'm sure you don't want to hide opera after entering tags, right?
1140
Ok, so it looks like nobody is interested in coding this application.
But would you be interested in _using_ such a system?

I'm asking that because I think it's useful enough for me to either code it myself or delegate it...

Hi Allen,

In my case, I don't care to have my browser bookmarks synchronized.
I want to completely replace the silly tree of bookmarks with the most efficient tag-based system at delicious.

With the right plugin (there are several), FF can do just that, use delicious INSTEAD of its own bookmark system. If you really want, you can do tag groups that work like clusters/folders. This is a collection of tags, so the same link may show up in more than one collection -which is the right thing!-.

In the end, I gave up FF/delicious integration for a simpler, faster Opera. Mainly reloading pages from cache (when hitting back), Opera is ridiculously fast! and this is something that makes my interactions with the web more fluent. so FF is out.

I still miss delicious, though.

This could be an easy project and very useful for many.

Here is the idea.
This is yet another tool to know how much you work/procrastinate, but with a twist. It must be lways on top.
It will have Three digital clocks:
Yellow clock is the MAIN countdown timer. Has a set interval (say 60 min) and warns you once it's over. That's your time for rest. Has a small number that counts how many intervals you have consumed
Can be paused/resumed with a shortcut

Red Clock, it's a 'unscheduled pause' timer, goes up while the main countdown is paused. Records how often you hit pause, and it shows the # of pauses next to it. This is indicative of how often you are interrupted.

Green Clock counts resting time. The difference with the red clock is that this is a scheduled pause, not an interruption. If you hit the start button (well, the shortcut) too early -i.e., not taking the scheduled rest- it'll warn you, but let you do it. The log will show you how many rests you skipped.

At the end of the day, it writes a small report to disk, with date/rest etc. this would be easy to track in excel. It'll also show a timeline (gant chart) of your day in the three colors.

I'd love to have such a tool, as it follows the advice of many time management gurus!

Anyone up for it?

Thanks

http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

it's a multiuse tool I just found because my 2gb laptop often doesn't obey orders and doesn't like to hiberate, even after installing M$ patches that supposedly fixed that! (

Example: wizmo hibernate.

the nice thing is that you can _force_ the command: wizmo hibernate! (aka: hibernate, damit!) :) .

It does understand other commands (see website).

If you have multiple monitors, this might help as well.

I'm still impressed :)

The only problem I see switching from Dopus to UE is that Jim, the developer, doesn't consider this his main product;I mailed him 2 days ago, with kudos and a feature request, and never heard back from him yet.

I think this is the best file management solution available to date.

To the guys who do TC... which plugins are recommended? I want source code highlighting for example...

It's a pity that there is no forum for this program.

Here:

UE seems to be liked.
I find it pretty impressive.
Just when my Dopus 9 demo license is about to expire...
I just need a keyboard shortcut that takes me to the address bar, and I might be set wit UE!

ahk?
onenote?

Those three would cover 95% of my needs.
