Announce Your Software/Service/Product / A TON of info
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 10, 2008, 06:37 PM »
I suppose it is about time for a fresh update to keep everyone informed, isn't it?

Someone somewhere asked me a question a while back- where do you program? Well...
Spoiler
I now program everywhere. Literally. I was writing (with a pen) code in math class today for SnapSuite. I take my laptop on drives almost anywhere to get some work done. If I am behind a computer (or even a pen and paper) I am usually doing something related to programming. Even sitting at lunch I brag about what I am doing (with laptop sitting on the table :)), and then show confusing bits of code to friends for that extra "oooh" :P (it is quite amusing)

Anyways...

Currently, work is flowing quite well. This new updated version will be a hybrid between Visual Basic 2008 and AutoHotkey. Let me elaborate as to why this is.

Visual Basic is a fine programming language- it has a broad range of capabilities and is fairly easy to start with. AutoHotkey on the other hand has an almost instantaneous language to learn, due to the (insanely) easy to access online command list. So obviously I know much more about AHK than VB, and therefore it is easier to not only develop, but to maintain and support code that I know is solid and stable.

Anyways, other than dual-coding...

Right now, here is the 411.

The Start tab is complete. It gives a quick and to-the-point bit of information for users.
AppLaunch is complete. I am not going to worry about the "scan your computer for applicable software" thing. I doubt anyone that uses Safari will try to run Maxthon.
AutoType is making slow progress. It will be one of the less challenging of the list, however.
DateMaker, SnapSuite's calender/planner, is complete (it doesn't actually do anything, more details soon)
FastNote, the big brother of MultiNote, is currently idle. It has a GUI and the interface is locked loaded and ready to rock, but it does NOTHING (currently).
KidDraw, a simplified MSPaint aimed at kids/doodle work, is currently idle. The GUI isn't ready and there is no backend to it. It may not make it to final :(
MediaControl is in it's final stages. The GUI needs some final touches, and the backend is prepped.
SmartBrowse is complete. Browse simpler! ;)
SystemCare is making steady progress. The GUI is being finalized and the backend has basic functionality.
The Updater is idle. Nothing to report on this- no GUI, no functionality. It may be pulled from the final release for the old system :(
The Support tab is in it's final stages. I need to make a FAQ, but other than that, I have provided enough contact info that no matter what you use- AIM, MSN, Y!, IRC, ICQ, Gadu-Gadu, MySpace IM, Google Talk, Forum PM, or Email, you have NO EXCUSE not to be able to get in touch with me. It even gives links to the official website, as well as this topic.
The About tab is about (excuse the pun :P) complete. I just need to verify I have everyone's name down for credit.

So, if you have read this entire post, have a cookie. And a break from the computer. You deserve it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Logitech's Setpoint
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 08, 2008, 10:16 PM »
You have never had any lags with your G7?  Their forum is overflowing with users who are seeing this.

Never an instant. Response time improved over any mouse I have had to date. Plugged, played, and installed SetPoint. :)

Only "complaint" I have is that it runs about 1.5 days of gaming on weekends without needing a battery swap, but a good few days on school days before recharging. Not my idea of long battery life, but a 2 hour charge isn't something to bitch about, either. :-\

I have SetPoint on my Vista machine with my Logitech G11 gaming keyboard and G7 wireless gaming mouse, and I have no issues. I use the options frequently to fine tune things and it goes off without a hitch. Not sure why you guys are seeing problems

After reading J-Mac's post, though, I will not be buying a $100 webcam from Logitech if it means it may screw over my $150 SoundBlaster card. :o

@ tomos: Check your PM :)

@ everyone: I have been working still at the VB SnapSuite, making amazing (to me, at least) progress (I just debugged a huge problem that has stopped me from doing anything else for the last 4 days!!! :D)

So, I figured I would post a to-do list here before I crash to bed (school has resumed, unfortunately). Please note that there are items in this list that are not listed anywhere (including above screenshots) and may be taken out because of problems at any time (possibly without notice).

This is nothing fancy, but here is my "ToDo list for snapsuite"

-Brandon

I've read  that in the "low-end" Vista versions you cannot use/access the Shadow backups, and you also cannot stop them from being created.  A lot of bloggers have complained that it takes up a fair amount of disk space for an unusable feature.

Jim

The "low end" versions (non Business/Enterprise/Ultimate) do not make Shadow Copies. The feature is not installed into Windows. Not sure where that came about  (I would notice if, when I installed Crysis, suddenly 12GB went lost into space instead of 6). Disk Cleanup also says, "In some versions of Windows Vista, the disk might include file shadow copies..."

Even the official Windows Vista website states that...
Windows Vista includes a useful innovation to help you protect your data: Shadow Copy. Available in the Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise editions of Windows Vista...

And still, even if you were using Business/Enterprise/Ultimate, you could simply go into Disk Cleanup, hit the More Options tab, and click the Clean Up button under System Restore and Shadow Copies, to clean all but the most recent restore point and all shadow copies.
1131
I am still working to get this done, and am getting quite a bit of knowledge along the way :)

I am updating the website a little every week with new info, right now there is a new page on the features for the VB version of SnapSuite (see here: http://incredisims.c...suitevbfeatures.aspx)

I am looking for any programs that anyone wants to see support for in AppLaunch before I call it final and work on other things.

Right now the current list of supported programs is...

  • Firefox
  • Opera
  • Maxthon
  • Netscape
  • Safari
  • K-Meleon
  • Smartbrowse
  • Internet Explorer
  • Thunderbird
  • Windows Mail (Vista)
  • Windows Live Mail
  • Outlook Express
  • Microsoft Office Outlook
  • The Bat!
  • iTunes
  • Songbird
  • RealPlayer
  • Foobar2000
  • Windows Media Player

If you have an app you want to see in the list then just post here or send me a PM :)

-Brandon
1132
Unless he is using Windows Vista Ultimate with the shadow copy feature, no, Vista isn't doing this. Only Ultimate makes shadow copies. The programs may have to apply additional patches for Vista or something. :-\

So, it's no longer "reimplementing" Firefox options dialog? :)

It is in a way, but only about 1/2 of it is copied from FF's options. It is the same structure and layout, but there are new tabs and options to set related to song downloads, kotkeys, and other misc stuff.

I just downloaded it myself but it looks like the options are all there (finally) and it seems to play songs faster than before. :-\

« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 02, 2008, 03:32 PM »
I am working hard on alpha 2 to get SystemCare working so that more people can transition over to this new version.

Here are a couple changes I have made:

 - Added code in AppLaunch to ignore errors if you click a button to start an app you don't have
 - Added new buttons in much of the program, both toolbars and main panel
 - Added the SnapSuite icon
 - Made the GUI 75% transparent (100% being a normal window, 0% being invisible) [NOTE: This does not appear in the screenshot below- ScreenShot captor doesn't catch it for some reason :-\]
 - SystemCare works 5/8 of what you see in the screenshot below (totally new system for doing this)
 - Because of the new SystemCare setup, you can now schedule programs to run individually via Windows Task Scheduler (they run the same as from within SnapSuite itself)

General Software Discussion / Re: Vista Aero interface and colors
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 01, 2008, 06:09 PM »
Yes, you can get classic mode, but then all the fancyness of Aero, including acceleration and the new taskbar.

The "personalization settings" hardly let you change anything.

Classic View -> Advanced does let you tweak stuff, but this only applies to a few apps (my guess: things that don't use a manifest file/resource, and thus wouldn't have "new look" on XP either).

I don't mean classic (2k) mode. I am talking about if you change the color of the AERO/color density you should be able to see everything more clearly. There are a lot more Advanced options as well- and they don't apply to just a few apps.

My dad's desktop has this problem - the LCD is just over-bright or something, so you can barely see the blue around it. I know you can change it somewhere in there (just don't know where right now).

f0dder, you can manually adjust the colors, brightness and all that good stuff from within Vista's "Personalization" area (right click the desktop, bottom option). Then hit Window Color and Appearance and Show Color Mixer. You can get the old XP style options to fine tune every little detail here too by clicking on "Open classic appearance properties for more color options"
1139
FYI...

If you get an error trying to run SnapSuite VB Edition, you need Microsoft .NET 3.5. You can get it here http://www.microsoft...6&displaylang=en

Sorry about that! :-[

SnapSuite 2008 Visual Basic Edition Alpha 1 Build 3 is now downloadable!

^ long name ^ :P

This is a basic release, just showcasing the new interface (yay!) and the ability to actually surf the web properly now. Not much works, but I am just looking for opinions on display and ease of navigation now. This is seperate from the standard (AHK) edition, so don't try to "update" to this (because I know someone will...;))

Notes:

Only Firefox, Opera and IE buttons work in AppLaunch.
AutoType tab is blank
FastNote does nothing yet (unless you copy and paste whatever you put in there)
MediaControl is blank
SmartBrowse is complete except the URL bar doesn't work (not a problem right now, it puts you at Google to make up for it)
SystemCare is blank
Updates is blank
About is blank

So obviously, not much is doing much, but it works. There are no bugs (:O) but if it doesn't do anything you can't really expect bugs... (once again, we aren't talking about Norton or AOL here ;D)

Also, credit where credit is due...
Wordzilla helped me a great deal getting started on this, so he needs a pat on the back :)
The icons used in the SmartBrowse tab are the FamFamFam Silk icons, I did not create them.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / VB 08 SnapSuite
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on December 31, 2007, 12:05 AM »
*Screams in happiness*

OK, not really. But I really, really want to. Really. :P

I have been kinda doodling around in MS Visual Basic for the last 3 months or so, not really getting anywhere. I can drag and drop but that is about it. Well, I decided to take the dive into the new 2008 version, seeing as it is out of beta stage now.

After about 3 hours of installing (twice), I started dragging and dropping and screwing things up (as usual ;D) and figured I would try to recreate SnapSuite (still being done in AHK) in VB. So about a half an hour later, I can happily say that I think the next main program version will be done in VB!!! :D

I honestly had no idea what the heck I was getting into when I downloaded VB 05 back in early October. I still don't know most of what I am doing. But I want to figure it out so badly that if I don't I will drive myself mad until I do.

Right now I just figured out how to do quite a few things...

1) Rename a control (not the text part, but the control itself) and the code controlling that control
2) Add tabs to a tab control (it sounds dumb, but...well yea...)
3) Start a program! This was the main problem for me- I couldn't make anything DO anything. (And that obviously defeats the purpose of a program. Unless of course we're talking about Norton or AOL here...;D)

If anyone can help me out in VB Express 08 that would be greatly appreciated ;)

And also, Happy New Year all :)

Living Room / The Sims 2 Project: "The World's Greatest House"
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on December 29, 2007, 07:27 PM »
(FYI: This post has a link to all the images available at the bottom)
NOTE: DC won't take the post attached images. Too long to upload. :( Just download the ZIP file that is linked below (or PM me).

OK, so the house's name isn't all that original or catchy, but it is a name.

Anyways...

If you know about, have played, or are a fan of The Sims series of games you probably want to keep reading. Otherwise you will end up getting confused (go on if you want, but unless you know how everything works it ends up being a jumble of confusing crap).

I have taken the last 2 weeks and used a little bit of time each day developing the best house I have made in The Sims (1 or 2) - and I have been playing for...8 years now?

I decided to build a house simply because I love architecture and whatnot, and making a house "optimized" for usage is something that always challenges me. It has to be functional, easy to access, and quickly reachable all at the same time. It can't be basic and it has to be one level. Basements are fine but no 2nd or 3rd story stuff. And I think I have finally figured out how to do it- all without a freaking driveway! Oh well, the grass is green enough to park a car on anyways :P

Here is my home realtor style info sheet explaining everything- it is pretty much to the point, but be prepared to read...

The Sims 2
CompuTech Computer Maintenance and Coding
Brandon Seal

Home name: The World's Greatest House
Size: Extra Large
Number of stories: 1 1/2
Number of rooms: 9
Number of baths: 1/2
Number of bedrooms: 1/2
Total price: 247,031 (encounting)

Summary: This large single-story home is designed for the party animal. It sports features never before seen, and is capable of holding over 75 sims at any given time.

Details: This house is the most detailed ever made by Brandon Seal. It has a unique 10 (outer) wall design, and the inner rooms range in size greatly. The entire house is made based on symmetry, although not being 100% symmetrical (due to house sizing and foundation problems).

It has a mid-sized welcome room with 8 couches able to hold a total of 22 people.

The kitchen and dining area has 3 large tables and is able to seat 24 people at once. The kitchen itself has enough room for an entire buffet just in counter space, and sports 3 top-of-the-line refrigerator/freezer combos (these have been connected to provide the ultimate in food storage)!

There is a luxurious entertainment room with a full surround sound entertainment system, plasma screen TV, 3 couches and 3 full recliners. This room holds up to 10 people being seated at once.

The computer area is where the action takes place. Up to 12 people can duke it out in the ultimate frag contest. All computers are Alienware and capable of running resolutions over 2000 pixels wide. In addition, each station has a comfortable seating setup and personal desk lamp so the action can go on through the night!

The bedroom/bathroom combo is the strangest portion of the house. There is no divider between the bedroom area and the bathroom area, because it is a single sim home. The room itself is quite spacious with plenty of room for additional areas if the need were to arise.

There is also a unique hallway connecting the bedroom and kitchen together; both for ease-of-access and emergency use.

The pool area, built directly into the ground as if it were an outdoor pool, is lower than the rest of the house. It is in the middle, surrounded comfortably by concrete walkways capable of having 4 people walk past each other in the same location at once. On 1 side of the pool there is no fence and the driving board and 2 ladders are located here. On the 2 sides of the pool are a glass wall and outdoor recliners for relaxation. On the far side of the pool is another glass wall, but with soft, indoor lounges for napping or relaxing after a dip in the warm water.

Bonus features:
The pool area is fenced in on 3/4 of the sides
The pool is lit by underground lighting whenever needed
The pool has a porch type of system for accessing it. Both doorways into the area have this.
The kitchen has lights strategically placed over the counter tops that have items needing lighting.
All rooms have a phone (except the pet rooms)
All rooms have a smoke alarm (except the pet rooms)
All rooms are generously lit for nighttime access
All windows (with the exception of behind the shower and refrigerator) feature curtains
All rooms have a plant (except the pet rooms)
The front porch is very large and has many plants around the front wall of the house
The walkway up to the front porch is extremely large and comes in diagonally from the sidewalk.
The walkway up to the front porch and the front porch itself are lit very well from solar night lighting on either side of the walkway.
The public sidewalk has been equipped with solar night lighting as well.
The mailbox has been moved on to the front porch walkway to add ease of access for the homeowner(s)
There is a side porch that has 2 swings, a table and chairs (seating 6) and a barbecue.
The perimeter of the home is enclosed by wood fencing.
The front room of the home has a burglar alarm to herd away intruders.
The front doors are colored differently than the interior doors.
The doors going into the pool area and to the 2nd porch are sliding doors, unlike the rest of the house.
All windows are the same, and offer a large amount of sunlight each.
All lights inside are built into the ceiling to prevent floor and wall clutter.
All wall coverings are the same, but carpets are not. The colors look good together and no two colors are repeated.
The grass has been over-seeded and is extra green for the homeowners.
The house also offers a magnificent view of the Pleasantview bridge, as well as easy access to the silent tram that runs by on the hill several hundred feet away.
The house is on the beach, high enough to be safe from natural disaster but close enough to be just less than a hundred feet away.
The exterior of the house is made of brick to keep it secure and stable in storms.
The ground was leveled out to be the same as street level prior to building.

And the house isn't even done yet!!

Here is a link to a ZIP with all 25 images in it, and 5 individual images are below (they are included in the zip also).

I also plan to upload a YouTube video tour of it sometime soon.

N.A.N.Y. 2008 / SnapSuite 2008
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on December 28, 2007, 06:24 PM »
(Sorry about the large number of images, but I figured I should show all the parts of the program)

Hi everyone,

Here is my N.A.N.Y. 08 submission, a large combination of many programs made by myself in order to simplify many daily tasks.

SnapSuite is a fully featured program with manu unique features.

It has a program launcher recognizing many popular programs like Opera and Thunderbird (known as AppLaunch)
It has a semi-automatic typing tool to automate long words and phrases (AutoType)
It has an Instant Message/Chat Room cleaner for times when the boss/the parents come in and the content on the window is not..."suitable" (AutoType)
It has a media control "center" that lets you control playback and volume levels (MediaControl)
It has a full callendar, notepad (known as "MultiNote") and file downloader (MultiBar)
It has a basic web browser based on the Internet Explorer engine (SmartBrowse)

SnapSuite's main feature, however, is none of these. It has a complete, automatic, and extremely simple to use computer maintenance solution. This part of the program, known as SystemCare, allows you to do 4 stages of file system cleaning, registry cleaning, system optimization, file system defragmentation, registry defragmentation, malware scans, Windows/Office updates, Apple Software updates, and updates to other programs (most of this is powered by 3rd party, freeware programs - these are tested extensively and used on all computers in my home for maximum peace-of-mind and usability). If you don't have something that SystemCare needs to help you keep your system in tip-top shape, it will automatically download AND install it for you! SystemCare also includes 2 schedulable programs for quick, automatic system maintenance while you are sleeping or otherwise away from the computer.

SnapSuite has a simple and very fast updating system, and a full "About" section listing many people (mostly here at DC) that have helped me make SnapSuite possible.

As an added bonus I also include random features now and again in updates, the newest one is the ability to show the main GUI window by single-clicking the tray icon :)

I do hope everyone that does download my program benefits from it, and if you do or don't feedback is always welcome  :)

-Brandon

Just an FYI for all SnapSuite users...

JkDefrag 3.33 has been uploaded - run your downloader again to get the new version (or retrieve and overwrite it manually). :)

In a herd of mass confusion, I am re-organizing the website in an attempt to make it look (and function) better.

I am making the download links finally work, giving more in-depth information, putting info where it belongs, and making the pages easier to read.

I also plan to update every page on the site to make sure all information is correct and accurate.

It should be done by 3PM my time (2 hours from now) but just in case something goes belly up the home page says "Under construction until Christmas day".
1148
Also, in addition to the above post

I received a request from tomos a while back about the ability to open the program with just one click on the tray icon.

This has been implemented in 1.0.1! It was a simple line of code so I tossed it in as an extra. :)

make it restore on single click! (campaign for single clicks)

I am in for NANY '08 :)

I have finished working on my program, SnapSuite, and you can get the download here (https://www.donation...=8345.0;attach=25158) and read about what it is and what it does below.

-Brandon

Spoiler
(Copied from the forum topic, https://www.donation...x.php?topic=8345.250)

SnapSuite 2008 combines a powerful program launcher, a text-macro creator, instant message cleaner, media & volume controller, calendar, a basic notepad, a file downloader (NEW!), a web browser, a complete system maintenance solution, and an easy-to-use updater.

Taking approximately 60 to 120 seconds to install on high speed internet, with a simple 2 step initial setup process, SnapSuite can be up and running in about 150 seconds (assuming you have all 3rd party programs required by SystemCare). If you need additional programs for SystemCare to properly maintain your PC, they will be automatically downloaded and installed for you!

SnapSuite starts in approximately 5-7 seconds (including splash screen). It stays running in your system tray for easy access and can be closed anytime by simply right clicking the icon and selecting "Exit SnapSuite".

SystemCare has 2 automated maintenance programs that can be run on-demand or via Window's Scheduler, and they now give a live in-GUI countdown of the time remaining to reboot/shutdown (30 seconds).

Help is built into the program, providing you with information easily, anytime you need it. My email address, along with my AIM, MSN, and Yahoo instant messenger addresses are available at the bottom of the Welcome tab for your convenience if you have a problem, idea, suggestion or complaint. The welcome tab also gives you a rundown of the program's abilities in a small summary, so you can get started right away.

SnapSuite will continue to grow with new updates, enhancements, and more.

Donations are also welcomed, and a button to donate to either me (Brandon Seal) or Walt Winstel (Loki15) is available under the About tab (a list of all the DCers that have helped me with SnapSuite is also available under the About tab, so it is definitely worth a look!)

I really hope you enjoy this program- I have come to love making it and it brings me great joy when I see someone has downloaded it. Please don't be shy if you have something to say about it, including bad things, because that lets me improve and learn. :)

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / SnapSuite 1.0.1
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on December 21, 2007, 08:50 PM »
SnapSuite 1.0.1 Release :D

OK, here is the 1.0.1 version, with an added Disclaimer for maintenance (just basically I am not responsible if nuclear war or whatever takes place because of your running CCleaner... ;D), fixed text for the FileHippo Update Checker deleter, and a fix for the "Shutdown now" and "Reboot now" buttons not working.

If you only need the main exe, you can run the standard updater via SnapSuite > About/Update > Update SnapSuite

If you need all 3 new exes (main, and shutdown/reboot schedulers) then just run your original downloader again.

ALSO, on a related note. If you are a new user and were not able to install because Advanced WindowsCare was not able to download, that has also been resolved. I am very sorry about that! :-[

Enjoy!

-Brandon

EDIT: If you have trouble updating because of an "EXE Corrupted" error message, make sure SnapSuite is closed before clicking Yes in the updater window. It occasionally will not close (even though it is told to).
