Living Room / Re: Hacker Demos Security Flaw in Hotel Room Locks
« Last post by rgdot on October 27, 2012, 07:54 PM »
Hacks and security flaws that require physical access? I would be more worried about securing the hotel to begin with, either from intruders who just walk in or workers who are tempted to do these stuff. Yes I realize I left out hotel guests as a possibility but to be honest if I go to a hotel and need to worry about who is staying in the room above mine then I shouldn't go on vacations ever.

OMG! I have been hacked by Mouser!!! :o

We will look back at this in 2020 when the planet is renamed Apple and wish we gave MS more of a chance  ;)

Has anybody tried WinMetro by IOBit, that kind of emulates Metro on XP and later?

I played around with it, it is not too bad, such as it is (not the real thing obviously)

I have had the chance to read industry type publications like Information Week (as opposed to consumer stuff like PC World) and I have kept some issues somewhere in a pile in my dusty closet. One of the things I remember in the years leading up to Vista was MS flirting with making a big change and I remember abandoning 'legacy' being mentioned in several articles. It never happened because there was a backlash, not a consumer one because this was before any public releases, but a developer and business one. Windows 8 seems to be at least a bit of a step in that direction. My point is change will encounter resistance, not to be pro or anti Windows 8, but to realize any change will meet resistance and I don't think DC would be any different in reacting to it.

My vote goes for not being able to 'accidentally' delete favorites that way.
For *me* 'delete last x' is likely to always be more useful than any total wipes.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Listary Pro for only $9.95 on Friday 19 October
« Last post by rgdot on October 21, 2012, 01:26 PM »
Couple of observations:

Listary seems to be a modern version of the old powerpro.
Maybe one small aspect of Powerpro. IMO, Powerpro is the single greatest utility ever coded. I have Windows 8 Pro x64 and I still use Powerpro. I use it for managing my clipboard, I built my dock using PP, I use it for text replacement, etc. True, it's also capable for favorite folders but I don't need that aspect as I use Directory Opus and Windows built in favorites for dialogs.

For sure, small subset of what powerpro can do. I still use the shortcuts, clipboard, notes, recent apps, recent folders, send keys and more features of it.

Listary seems to be difficult to describe by techy people and even through video. Example: rjbull (not picking on you, just observing)

you can make any standard File Open/Save dialog instantly switch to whatever directory your file manager of choice is currently pointing to.

I am already pointing to a directory and have navigated to that directory using the FM. So presumably I can already work in that directory when I am already there.
Note: I am not saying you are wrong or it's not useful, I am talking about how to describe Listary to some one.

Even in the days of php and the like, believe it or not I can personally use good csv to html (or txt) tools, similar to FilesFromCSV but in my case for example multi line is a must.

The 'traditional' 9. The rest have to go through a very lengthy admission process. The rule is their application will be considered only when they are visited by humans.

Run the exe. It will offer you some rectangle combinations like templates, either use them or ignore them and create your own places.

If you choose one of the templates you can copy and paste files and folders into the places.

If you want to create your own places, right click the tray icon and choose 'Places settings'. Use the + sign and browse to the file or folder you want.

(Folders with lots sub folders and files will take a while to appear and explorer.exe may even crash)

General Software Discussion / Re: Does the browser Opera suck?
« Last post by rgdot on October 10, 2012, 06:02 PM »
Is Internet Explorer really that dangerous nowadays? I think this mentality is something leftover from the IE6 Pre-SP2 days....and yes, Opera does suck as you will see more and more as you continue to use it. But, in the end, use whatever works for you.

That said, redirection is not necessarily a problem IE, but could be the way the site is coded. Just saying...

Flame war ;)

I would say security wise not using IE is probably not valid anymore*, certainly not compared to IE6 days like Josh says. Primary reason to use Firefox is add-ons, speed and open source. Chrome is speed and extensions. Opera the same. Several attempts at switching to Opera have failed in my case, it is just different as you noticed, may be not worse but for sure different.

*One example: For me, on an older (XP) pc, IE8 is the slowest to open and that's even compared to add-on loaded Firefox installs.
