Living Room / gmail slowing down??

gmailTbird01.png

anyone else having problems with gmail?
for me, it's been very slow to send mail of late, sometimes will only go on second attempt [EDIT: using email client]

I dont think it's my connection,
or client (Thunderbird)
as I get mail from other sources without problem (in fairness though I dont use other addresses as much)

Just thinking though I send all my mail from gmail and thats where the problem is noticable -
just sent test mail with attachment from another address - no problems sending

So, how is it going for gmail and you??

Living Room / Re: Windows XP Annoyance: ToolTip pop-ups

I have a "multi-level" taskbar  :)

When i mouse over icons in systray, the tip always shows above the icon
obviously hiding the icon above, but its manageable.

EDIT: thats the case for me for the top row of icons as well..
If your bar looks like this there must be something wrong!
This is not how its supposed to!
Yeah, it shouldnt hide the icon you're mousing over

I love scouring for useful freeware, and I think software in general is pretty cool (my husband has a t-shirt that says "I love my geek"--says it all, doesn't it?)
;D nice one!

Have you had a look at Agenda at Once

see review here
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5789.0

I havent tried any other organisers so cant really compare -
but you can drag todo tasks to calender/scheduler & show all in one window.
theres things I'd like changed -
but theres a beta just out so I have great hopes for it!

I would prefer the main window appearing on a double click of the icon.
agreed, good idea.
or
how about (optionally I guess) on single click of try icon -
I would always use the shortcut to bring up the clips so this would be better for me at any rate ..

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here
(or should i say I have a bit of a dilemma here - english is slowly slipping from my grasp :) - dont know if thats from living abroad or the strong beer I just drank too quickly)

Anyways, down to business!
Dilemma is I now have a list of exactly 200 Disc catalogers sent to me by Crush who says I can
You can do with it what you want

with credit naturally -
thats some list Crush!

but I still unsure how to present it.
Does anyone else have opinion or ideas - HELP  :tellme:

I could show it as a table, putting it in post 2,
that would overlap with post one but ....
Post one could become then the "best of"
Thing is I dont really want to commit myself to such long term caretaking of list
But I guess it could stand as a snapshot & people can reuse any info there if they want

Hey Darwin hope you're feeling a bit better..

I'm downloading - that should be uploading i guess - photos from camera as i write so i can post a view from the window or wherever as people were doing earlier in this thread.

Tom's the name - but "tom" was gone when i first joined the forum (just over a year ago - finally introducing myself!)

Anyways,
I'm irish and i live in germany for the last 4 & half years now.
Dont get homesick but do find the language a struggle at times, complicated by the fact that most people around here speak a dialect that even native speakers from elsewhere take time to come to grips with ...

I was 43 a couple weeks ago - at the beginning here i thought i was old for here but this thread & that one about what age people are made me feel a bit more "average" ! (I know - why should i want to be average, well it all began when I was a wee fellah... )

Computerwise, I'm probably about the same level as Curt who describes himself as "IT Analphabet" -
I'm not afraid to jump in and get my hands dirty though!
On the other hand I love software that works well and is easy to figure out -
I find if something promises something but doesent work easily out of the box I'll probably just forget about it unless I really want to do whatever it does.

I like taking fotos especially of where i live so -

from the front door - sun just over the hill
Fischbach03.jpg

from the window - south, morning again
Fischbach02.jpg

north-west, evening, edge of the village (about 5 houses up the hill  :) )

It's more that i notice how much mac's seem  to be marketed to people who don't want to get involved in installing software, configuring, etc.  to each his own i guess.

in other words, Steve Jobs wants his users to be smug n00bs,... no news there ;)

I guess that makes me a bit of a n00b - but not a smug one at least  :)

I mean:-
I dont mind installing (it the uninstalling that bothers me..)
- dont mind configuring (long as its not too complicated to figure out - e.g. I nearly always change shortcuts if I can..)
but
I love software thats "ready to go" so-to-say, software that works well out of the box, and in a logical way
(cant help of thinking about Opera vs. FireFox..)

On the other hand
it can be very rewarding to be involved (as a user I mean) in the development of a piece of software wher the author/s listen to what people want e.g. lots of stuff here, Surfulater, (hopefully Agenda at Once!)

General Software Discussion / Re: Must-have apps in the System tray?
« Last post by tomos on April 18, 2007, 11:51 AM »
the only reason I decided to post here in the end was I didnt see any taskbars quite like mine  :D

Taskbar01.png

I mean so high (5 icons high in systray, 4 in quick launch)
With Autohide of course, saves the need for virtual desktops - for me at any rate.

The icons in the SysTray seem to fluctuate
but usually have ones with * running.
Left to right & top to bottom -

Screenshot Captor for the shot
*Agenda at Once
*FRITZ!DSL (Broadband)
Surfulater
DC Forum Post Notifier
*Autohotkey
*Active Virus Shield (AOL - no spam yet, thank god)
*SpyBot - had Spyware Terminater for a while but went back to this trusty
*Backup4all
*FARR  :)
*Directory Opus
*Instant Boss -  :)
*Grid Move - more greets  :)
*Clip Help &Spell - & more :)
*Process Explorer

*PTRreplicator (Karens Tools) is also usually there to synch stuff to USB stick

Would like to change date thingy (I know what year it is..) but think I have to get another app for that (It seems to take it from the default which i dont want to change)
Also dont like the way the DE is always highlighted but it is handy to remind me why shortcuts sometimes dont work ...

General Software Discussion / Re: RANT: High Software Prices!
« Last post by tomos on April 18, 2007, 11:11 AM »
So we are left in this strange situation where companies are officially fighting to keep the program out of the hands of people who can't afford it, just so they can extract high dollars out of the people who can.  This is the kind of thing that makes me long for the day when we can all pay what we think a program is worth to us (i know it's not going to happen im just saying).
I suppose they reckon as well that if they reduce the price the others - "people who can't afford it" still wont buy it - maybe they're right...

in general i guess i evaluate companies and get a feeling for if i think they are trying to jack up their prices and update charges in order to maximize profits with no real "love" of their customers.  i want to support companies which balance making a profit with having happy users.  show me a company trying to bleed their users dry to squeeze the last drop of potential profits, and i'll show you a company whose users are looking for an excuse to jump ship.

nicely put!
I actually think the commercial world isn't so bad that way - just got to wait around sometimes for some other product to catch up  :)

EDIT: I think I need to tweak the settings of which file to index a bit... or perhaps index only part of my data. Estimate: 690'152 documents, 396.89 GB, 146.8GB index size. That's a task for tomorrow :)

Is that 146.8GB a typo, or
is that the norm,
that the Index size would be almost half the size of the indexed files !!! :tellme:
Would that also be the norm for other desktop searchers ?

zridling: I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to pay those prices anymore!'

PS: If you didn't watch the movie, you might be slightly confused now. No problem, just watch the movie. 8)
I never even heard of the movie but had a good  ;D ;D ;D at that one!!

More and more I'm looking for and donating money and feedback to open source and donationware programs where I can find them. I'm just sick of companies like Microsoft and Adobe   ....   Better, let's start listing all the companies and software vendors that treat their registered users well!

I think people are looking for alternatives - you see it here all the time & I know I am too - I use graphic software but dont get paid equivalent prices - even if i did I'd be looking - & am looking - at alternatives at the prices Adobe wants.

They (Adobe et al) are going to suffer in the long run when all of a sudden Photofiltre or Xara or whoever takes over their world

A few alternatives:

If using Win2K, with the focus on an error box, you can just press Control-C to have Windows send the text to the clipboard.
that sounds like the way to go!

Lastly, Nir Sofer's SystemExporter:

SysExporter utility allows you to grab the data stored in standard
list-views, tree-views, list boxes, combo boxes, text-boxes, and
WebBrowser/HTML controls from almost any application running on your
system, and export it to text, HTML or XML file.
Here's some examples for data that you can export with SysExporter:
* The files list inside archive file (.zip, .rar, and so on) as
displayed by WinZip or 7-Zip File Manager.
* The files list inside a folder.
* The event log of Windows.
* The list of emails and contacts in Outlook Express.
* The Registry values displayed in the right pane of the Registry
  Editor.
* The data displayed by SysInternals utilities (Registry Monitor, File
  Monitor, Process Explorer, and others.)

& that sounds very good

General Software Discussion / AutoHotkey scripts - what to do?!
« Last post by tomos on April 17, 2007, 03:05 AM »
Basic Autohotkey question:
I know I could go to Autohotkey forums, maybe should even.

But,
there's so many helpful Autohotkey scripts here that I thought I'd ask here  :)

If you have an *.ahk file -
I believe if you simply open it, (with Autohotkey running) it will work/run/do whatever it's supposed to do.
Or often theres *.exe versions of the scripts. But if one can run various scripts through AHK it would naturally be a lot neater.

What I want to know is if you can simply add contents of the .ahk file to the default .ini file that loads with AHK
or would it be better or
can you make it load with AHK as well as the default script

grab windows object hotkey in SC is Ctrl+Shift+PrtScr i think.
Bring that up and then select the object and hit Ctrl+T.

dunno ..

maybe I'm still misunderstanding?

"grab windows object",
then in main window I click & drag to select text,
then Ctrl+T
then paste in Notepad - well whatever

I just get the date & time of capture.

When I select then go Edit/Copy text to clipboard
as said above, I get the Title of the window & the name of the originating programme & date
as opposed to the text in the actual window/selected area

I notice I'm still using Version 2.25.03
Will bring up to date & see any diff.

the help file definitely needs an update.
to do text scraping, do windows capture mode, select the text object, hit ctrl+t (or use redbox menu to see preview of text and capture to clipboard).
I'm afraid i still dont understand -
specifically
"do windows capture mode" = Alt+PrtScr ?

I tried under Edit > Copy text to clipboard
but got the Title of the (Error)window & the name of the originating programme & date
as opposed to the text of the actual window

Am i making sense - am i understanding the text scraping thingy at all ??

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: List of disc catalogers
« Last post by tomos on April 16, 2007, 01:00 PM »
just my personal opinion, wouldn't such a long list make a person lose interest? btw, how about introducing some criteria and limit to final review to something like 10-15 apps, the rest can included in an appendix.. we can also suggest that readers who don't like the the first 15 can try out the rest by using the same methods followed for the first 15 and post a mini-review.. :)

I kind of like that idea
maybe the "best" choice/selection -
a sort of a short list with more details
(no-one is volunteering to do "full" reviews but hopefully someone out there might eventually be inspired to do so!)
& then
a full list with minimal details ...

on the other hand -
I don´t think that people lose interest by the size of the list - they lose interest if the tools they look at doesn´t meet their needs.

To make them comparable you have to pick out the most interesting features people are searching for. The first one finds it more interesting to have thumbnails for pictures, the other one is more fascinated in MP3-Tagging-features, others prefer high speed searches over a very big list of files (perhaps with features to look inside archives) and less memory usage. Some wants to give out money for a good product - others don´t have enough money for that and need full featured freeware-versions and so on. I now can say that out of these huge list only a few meets my personal needs and no one has all the features I´d personally like to see. Such complex programs like catalogers are too different to say what are the "best". You can only say there´s a best one for a special usage.

Which one´s the right for you depends on whatfor you want to use it!
...

The biggest comparison list I found also had only very few and old entries but this was ok: http://www.cdfinder.de/list2.html The only problem is that this list is looking at rather old and only 68K-/powerpc-processor Mac-Software. This type of list is very helpful to make a good decision. A personal review also would be an addition to something like this. What do you think about it?

the table there http://www.cdfinder.de/list2.html looks good.
Still cant get my head around a list of 200 and how that might look - or be presented

also as you say
To make them comparable you have to pick out the most interesting features people are searching for.
conversely,
I think the best idea would be to point out the best features/strong points of the various programmes -
then
if someone is looking for something that does good thumbnails of their photos they can dig their way through and hopefully find a recommendation ...

I think they can be helpful -
KenR, for example, (I think!) always uses the ThumbsUp for his reccomendations or "Finds"
If someones reviewing/commenting on something they can give relevant symbol.

... I used it for myself to see how many progs are existing, how good are they and what are the shiny pearls (best features) of them, how many are still in development and I wanted to see the amount of free/commercial software and the prices of them. That´s all.

The list is now nearly at the end with nearly 200 entries. Now it´s the question how I could post it here. The best thing would be if others could update or add new programs to the list.

sounds great Crush.
I have thought it would be great if others could add to the list because as you say it's very time consuming (& my list only has 25 I think  :o )
Doing screenshots for such a large number would be out of the question I think..
also,
while screenshots make the whole visually more appealing, more often than not they aren't very informative.

Both of mine [monitors] are way above eye level. This one I'm looking at right now has the bottom of the screen at about eye level, while my other one is about mid-screen at eye level.

mine is also above eye level cause of weird computer table design.
I find it's not good either - I sort of throw my head back -
but luckily can compensate by raising my chair..

how do you disable tool bar -
is that simply the help & options icons in top right?

anyways, couldnt find how to remove them too..

thanks,

as i said before
I was very impressed by this capability (in ExifPro) -

in the viewer with more than one foto displaying,
zoom (+) enlarges all photos at the same time -
if you drag one you drag them all - super for comparing details of similar photos.
- Ctrl+drag just moves one ...

 :-*  :-*

ExifPROViewer4Pane.jpg
Tagging from the viewer is very helpful, especially if trying to decide what to print.

At this stage
I'm also more curious about the "management" side of it -
so I'll shut up about viewers  :P

... and get back when I've tried a bit of cataloging & tagging
