Activation/License/Language Help / Re: Use in work environment ?
« Last post by mouser on August 23, 2012, 10:55 AM »
Welcome Constance.

This page will answer your question formally:
https://www.donation...r.com/Help/entry/23/

Quoting from that page:
If you are simply an individual using the program at work, it doesn't matter if you are a member of a large business -- you do not need a formal commercial license (unless the program specifically says a commercial license is required for all profit making use).  Commercial Licenses are normally intended for the situation where many people at your business all use the program.

i think when you get to wanting to uninstall 100 programs, that's when you are probably better off formatting the hard drisk, and installing a clean coy of windows, and just reinstalling the programs you use on the new clean pc.

you say you dropped a bookmark "folder" -- clearly from the screenshot it created one item with the combined text.. definitely not what you wanted.
i'll have a look at it but can you tell me more about what you mean when you say you dropped a "bokmark folder" -- what exactly did you drag and drop onto LBC?

If the Interwebs can generate 700K for a bus monitor who was picked on by 12 year olds, I hope we can do at least 7.5% of that to save a man's life.

one of the hardest's lessons to learn in the age of internet (or global?) funding, and one of the most confusing, is how incredibly arbitrary and capricious and winner-take-all this kind of funding is.  it's not based on logic or need -- it's a mystery combination of factors that create a cascade of publicity.  i find it incredibly disconcerting and troubling.

but i would urge you not to try to use reason or rationality to analyze how much donations/funding something gets, and especially don't compare the funding of one thing to another or you are likely to get extremely depressed and angry at a world/community.

did you try launching the configure screensaver start menu item in the start menu group for multi photo quotes?  if that works it will help me narrow down the cause of the problem.

Can you tell me what operating system you are using?
Can you try running the configure option from the start menu while logged in as an Administrator (or as the same user that installed it).
My memory is that MultiPhotoQuotes doesn't require a license key.

ps. I'm going to be away for a few days so please excuse any delay in further replies.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me understand Virtual Machine [VMWare]
« Last post by mouser on August 19, 2012, 08:30 AM »
More advanced users could use snapshots to keep different saved states, but by far the most common use of a snapshot, for people who use a virtual machine to test software, is:
  • You make a snapshot of the machine after you do the operating system install and after you have updated the operating system.
  • This is your base snapshot of your known trusted good machine.
  • Then when you want to test something you install it, test it, and then eventually REVERT to your base clean snapshot.

That is, you are always going back to your known trusted good clean snapshot after you finish a round of testing.

As has been pointed out by others, in theory a virtual machine is immune to attack by malware, but you should consider a few things before unleashing known malware in a virtual machine:
  • You have to be careful if your virtual machine is able to access the network -- especially because it may look to your real host computer and others on the network, as if the virtual machine is a "trusted" machine on your LAN.  One nice feature of a virtual machine however is that you can DISABLE network connectivity with a simple option, thus locking down the machine from any network access.
  • You also have to worry about any SHARED FOLDERS that the virtual machine software may set up.  A malware could infect such shared folders.
  • Lastly, there is always the possibility that a malware will be specifically coded to exploit bugs in a virtual machine software and "break out" of the virtual machine.  This is not a purely theoretical concern -- I have read about virtual machine exploits -- though I don't have any idea how rare they are.  But you should always be cautious about assuming that a virtual machine provides 100% secure testing environment for truly malicious malware.

A snapshot is functionally equivelent to doing a drive image, with some advantages:
  • Snapshots are managed and executed by the virtual machine software so it is really just a menu click away and could not be easier to use, and requires no extra 3rd party software installation -- snapshot making and restoring are built into the virtual machine software.
  • Snapshots are saved and restored VERY quickly (maybe 10 seconds or so).

Correct.
You could configure Screenshot Captor to always save to clipboard, and CHS would grab the screenshots and store them in it's database.

However let me note that Screenshot Captor is very well suited to being used to permanently store every capture you make with no need to interact with the program itself other than hitting the hotkey.

Yeah I really need to make it easier to find that -- it's a useful feature that is much too hard to discover.

Update: Watching the screencast was super useful - I'm pretty sure I know this error that triggered as you were scrolling the frame panel on the right hand side.  Portable users have reported when scrolling that clipart/frame browser very quickly it can crash.  I suspect you are seeing the same exact bug (whether you are running it portably or not). Seems like I really need to fix that bug.

SC now has a dynamic ragged edge effect under the SpecialFx menu, see here.

Thank you for the report jaden -- I will look into it.
However let me quickly note that SC now has a more flexible ragged edge effect that doesn't use frames.

Select the area to remove and then choose SpecialFx -> Splice out strip (Deluxe) [this is the last item on the menu], and choose "Ragged Edge" as the splice effect.

See sample screenshots here.

Try this version:
https://www.donation...elpAndSpellSetup.exe
(just install over current version).

NOTE: to get the new feature to work you need to go to the Interface Options tab and check the new checkbox at the bottom labeled "After selecting clip from system tray left+click menu, paste into last active window."

Btw since it hasn't been said in this thread yet -- a virtual machine is an absolutely essential tool these days; it lets you test software safely and without polluting your real machine.

Only tangentially related to what you are asking for, but my Web Link Captor program is sort of in the same ballpark.  Discussion area on forum here.

It's designed to collect search results and build a nice summary list with clickable links.

I'm trying to remember if its a bug or by design.. It copies the clip to the clipboard when you select it from tray.  My memory is that it should also copy it into the last active program, but it seems not.  It may have been that I thought it would be better to just copy it to clipboard and not try to paste anywhere, to avoid unexpectedly pasting it into an app didn't expect that to happen and just wanted it copied to clipboard..

I'll have a look -- the least I could do is make it an option.

ps. Welcome to the site.
