General Software Discussion / Re: CPU Utilization Alerter ?
« Last post by Renegade on December 12, 2006, 09:19 AM »
Thanks for all the suggestions.
  What a great forum!

Very good forum - There are some very smart people in here.

One of the things I really like is that there are a lot of developers and users here. It makes for a really cool mix.

- I'll have to check out some of those suggestions as well.

However I doubt anything will work reliably with Outlook as it loves to chew up CPU... (That was a blatant stab at Outlook... My FAVORITE application of all time...) Ooops... Was my tongue in my cheek? I should get back to work. :)

Well, I won't be entering this contest, but I've received some email from a blind user of my software and I'll be trying to work in some accessibility in a future version.

It won't be easy to start, but this is something that has always been on my mind. Until I got that email though, it was a VERY distant priority.

Fortunately he gave me some resource links to find out more so that I can work it in.

While good eye-sight is something a lot of us take for granted, not everyone has it. (I believe that it can be partially fixed by smoking marijuana, but if I'm wrong you'd at least have fun trying.)

But honestly, I had no idea that there was an entire genre of games out there like that. (But I don't play games either - they're more addictive than heroin.)

In any event, good luck to the participants and may the most fun game win! :D

Next on the agenda?

Spreading the word of the flying spaghetti monster! That's the hidden agenda of this site :)

Amen and pass the parmasan!

When you put up a prize worth $10k, everyone enters.  Whether they need it or not.

Yep. I entered. I didn't need it, but "wanted" it.

While I don't have a Team System license, I do have an MSDN Universal Subscription. (Which gives me a tonne of licenses.)

Looking at the results, I'd say that I'm happy that someone who needs it got it. (As I stated in my entry.)

I have no problems with how mouser runs things at all. I've donated software licenses to DC before and would do it again.

IF - and I stress IF - there was anything improper, the only result of it was good.

Mouser - if you want more licenses from me you have only to ask. DC's and your integrity is not in question - it's held with high esteem.

Cheers,

Ryan Smyth

Combine Scroogle with TOR and you've got a fantastic way to search for poisons to kill your cheating spouse and ways to dispose of the body!

Tried out XYplorer, and while it might work ok, I found it a bit rough around the edges. I use FileBoss for when I need heavy duty work and the learning curve was smaller. XYplorer seems to take a bit more. Which seems wierd as FileBoss has a lot more heavy lifting functionality in it.

YMMV I suppose.

Oh - I'm going to have to give that XYplorer a spin. I used to have PowerDesk years ago and liked it, but then... Well - it's just time to have a look again. Thanks for the recommendation.

Maybe I'm just a grump about this, or perhaps I'm just a web bigot, but "best" and "online app" don't belong in the same sentence.

I still find that there is nothing like a client interface. A web browser is still a poor-man's client.

The reasons for that for me boil down to browsers still being inordinately heavy. While they are great as a 'swiss army knife', they just don't cut it when you want a razor for precision or an axe for brute force. You simply can't shave with a swiss army knife, and chopping down trees is possible, but takes forever.

Maybe in the future they may work, but right now, well, they're just not up to snuff.

More reliable bandwidth and faster browsers will make a big difference.

For RSS, email, and some other things there is no avoiding using a network. Office applications? Calendars? Remote file access? Ummm... Can we say "RealVNC"? Actually there are some companies making a killing off of remote access. But that will die like many other markets. Heck - I need to shut up now before I blather on forever... before you know it I'll be spouting off about technology life-cycles and other boring junk.

Peace, Love, and Eternal Groovieness!   8)

Did anyone ever read anything by Stephen Huff in the alt.shareware.authors (or whatever it's called) NG? Man... That was hilarious. Biggest flame was I've ever laughed at! :D

There was a Microsoft site where in the CSS comments someone wrote something like "Stupid workaround for IE bug." Not profanity, but certainly obscene! :D

Hahahahaha~!  :D

Nothing like comments in code! :D

Thank-you very much for posting that! It's probably the most abso-fucking-lutely entertaining and informative post ever on source code!  8)

(I'm not surprised that PHP wins out there.)

Cheers!

It's a good program. I use it to open installers on a regular basis. Works like a charm.

It's a bit awkward for regular daily use as there are friendlier alternatives, but for power users and developers, it's a must have.

And were those screen shots taken with Screen Captor by any chance? It's a pretty good program from what I've seen. :D (Thanks mouser!)

The guy who created it was just interviewed on Venture Voice or Hanselminutes recently. I forget which. I think it was Venture Voice.

Might be worthwhile. But you do have to work it smartly. You can't just invite everyone and their grandmother. But it sounds like a good tool.

Developer's Corner / Decent Outlook/Office Programming Resources?
« Last post by Renegade on November 20, 2006, 05:13 PM »
Hello all,

I'm just so eternally frustrated with Outlook... It's eroding my sanity in large chunks. (Worse than iTunes.)

So, I've pretty much decided to take up Office and Outlook programming so that I can hammer Outlook into something faster and more useable for myself.

If anyone does any Office/Outlook programming, would you care to point me to some of the better resources. This is one of those things that I just don't care to learn much about - I just want to get things done ASAP - so any good resources that you've found useful will be greatly appreciated.

I'll of course check out the MSDN Magazine site and the Code Project first as those two generally seem to be some of the best places to look at sample code.

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Hmmm... Might make for a fun project too. :)

Once I get the other ones out of the way though... Focus Ryan... Focus... Now repeat after me, "I will finish my current projects before I pick up more... I will finish my current projects before I pick up more... I will finish my current projects before I pick up more... " :D

In the meantime, I'm sure that there are some Windows Explorer replacements that should have that built in. (Or I'd hope so - I seems like such an obvious thing.)

Ok - That was removed. It only applies to IE 4. :(

Which sucks - I wish MS would fix the problem rather than just pull functionality. It's stupid users that really cause problems for everyone else. The constant nagging in Vista is another example of how click-happy users spread viruses and ruin things for everyone.

It's too bad. Because that preview functionality was very cool. I used to use it all the time.

There is a preview on the left that I remember. I forget how to get it to show, but try turning off the treview and you might see it. It was in Windows 2000.

If you select (on XP) there will be a "Play all" but it isn't quite what you want.

I can't remember how to turn it on though. You could just use a regular player. ALSong lets you browse music in the playlist like in folders, so that's kind of similar but not the same.

General Software Discussion / Outlook revealed to me what databases really are...
« Last post by Renegade on November 16, 2006, 10:47 PM »
But it's not printable here. It is here though.

While fighting with Outlook and the miserable way that it handles its own data, it occurred to me what databases really are. Only in the most crass of terms though.  ;)

Anyways, it looks like I've got an infinite loop while exporting from Outlook for the new box. Joy. I've only had to reinstall Office once so far though. I suppose I should count myself lucky...  :-\

Great program. It's a must have if you need to track down rogue processes.

Simple to the point of being stupid, but still very very cool. Much better than MySpace. ;)

Now, here's my first post that has been shrinksterized, tinyurlized, and shortextized...

General Software Discussion / Doing the "Mac"arena
« Last post by Renegade on November 07, 2006, 06:50 AM »
Seems like the Macarena is dancing on a few Macs :)

There's a new virus called the "Macarena" that infect some files on OSX and if they are executed, they can take control of the machine. Symantec gives it a "low" threat assessment (make of that what you will), but warns that this may be the beginning of virus writers beginning to target the OSX OS.

Now for the hard part... Must... Resist... Urge... To...

Ah... Urge resisted successfully! :D

While Opera is fast to display HTML, and quick loading, the way it handles javascript is very slow. This is a common criticism of Opera, and probably the major reason why I don't use it more than I do. (I use Opera for some things - not many though.)
