you can delete a file attached to a post; just edit the post and uncheck the checkbox for it.

Living Room / Re: How to tell if the Universe is a computer simulation
« Last post by mouser on October 11, 2012, 10:13 AM »
I'll just point out one more quick problem with this approach:
To kick things off, the team of researchers from Bonn have speculated that the problem with all simulations is that they're discretized: to model a physical phenomenon, the real world has to be represented by separate points in time and 3D space. Sure you can make the distance between those points reeeeeeally small—but you still have to have this kind of grid.

There is (and has always been) a very active debate in the physics community about whether the real world is in fact discrete at the lowest level when you really get down to it.

It doesnt have to be very accurate to be useful.   in fact i'll be you could probably produce a useful and reasonably accurate approximation function using only:
  • the company
  • the initial price
  • the initial review scores

It would actually be a fun statistics project for anyone in school looking for an independent study assignment.

You'd just have to scrape the data for a bunch of games, to get the company name, initial price, initial review scores, release date, and find a source that has historical game price data. And then see what kinds of functions you could fit to the data.

The hard part would probably be collecting the historical/training data.

Has someone made a site yet that predicts prices of games over time?  So that for a new game we could see a prediction of how the price will change over the next year?  Might help in making decisions..

Can you try going into the "Launching Files" tab in options, and trying to change some of the options at top.
Most importantly, try unchecking the "Use file launch helper utility", but if that doesnt work try changing the "Launch Method".

Let me know if that helps.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Show us your LaunchBar Commander Screenshots

I wanted to show a screenshot of my subtle non-distracting launchbar on windows 7, because the display options for it require a bit of tweaking, but for those people like me who want their launchbar to be minimally distracting but still stay on the screen, have a look:

Note how I left the theme (in main Options tab, not shown) at Aluminium, BUT had to go into the dock and turn off the border, and change to "Color Skinned" with blue color.  I also set it to have some transparency which makes it duller than it otherwise would be and makes it fade more into background.

Ugh.

If we are going to go down this awful road, these app stores NEED to start VERY CLEARLY labeling software that shows ads as such.  We are getting very dangerously near a situation where ever damn app on the planet is going to be shoving ads down our throats and that's going to become the new definition of "freeware".

SC already has a memo feature for every image, its the text area at the bottom of the image.. that text is saved in metat data of image.

So what you are asking for is 95% done already.

Maybe best to take a step back and ask if there are already good screensavers that simply display a url live that would already be able to handle this.  probably are right?

I mean I have a screensaver tool (MultiPhotoQuotes), I could add an IE window type to it.. But there are probably others.

you could pop up a dialog to ask the user how he would like it handled.

yeah i like that idea a lot.  before the first time, and the first time after you change screenshot directories, it should pop up a dialog telling you what it proposes to do, can you can say yes or no.  that's how i should have done it in the first place.

You can also use the MoveTo menu to delete (and move) items selected in the thumbnail panel.

App summed it up well:
The toolbar on the far right is for working with the image displayed in the main panel, not for working with images in the left panel.

Thank you for the thoughtful post.

The weaklink in that workflow is re-enabling the popup which has to be done in preferences AFAICS.

Not true, you can change this from the system tray:

I explained to them: "No, I'm a computer programmer."

Hey, if I woke up and thought all my pictures were gone I'd be pretty mad too.. I'm sympathetic to people who occasionally come on here to curse me out because I do plenty of cursing and screaming at software myself..

I apologize.

Normally one wouldn't point the screenshot folder of Screenshot Captor at your "My Pictures" directory, which I guess is what you did -- causing Screenshot Captor to treat all those files as its screenshots which it by default moves to the "Older" directory when they are a certain age.  It won't ever delete any files.

I can see how that would be frustrating.  You can turn off this behavior on the bottom of the "Saving and Loading Files" tab of options.

It has been suggested that I disable this feature by default.. I guess maybe this post is the sign that I should.

It's a very very useful feature for screenshots, but I can see that it would cause havok if people change the screenshot folder to some other directory.  Perhaps I should leave it enabled by default BUT disable it any time the screenshot folder is changed.

I'm sorry that it caused confusion and stress.  Like I said it won't ever delete any of your files, so you should not have lost anything.
