General Software Discussion / Re: Are you going to wait for Windows 9?
« Last post by rgdot on November 21, 2012, 04:39 PM »
Not sure about locked infrastructure coming to the desktop but on the whole topic of Windows versions...the problem here is new versions too soon and then adding relatively minor stuff for it to be worthy of a new version. I would wait for Windows 9 mainly (only?) because 6 years - between 7 and 9 - will provide me with more of a case to upgrade. Not really because Metro sucks or not.

Living Room / Re: How Much Do You Trust Wikipedia?
« Last post by rgdot on November 18, 2012, 05:37 PM »
The thing Wikipedia is sometimes ridiculed for is almost, I said almost ;) , a strength.

Take this scenario:
If I have site that I only edit and it happened to rank high on search engines, I fill it with wrong info. That's bad right? At least Wikipedia can be corrected, checked and edited.

In this sense one should trust it compared to other online sources. Not really a substitute for physical encyclopedias though. I am tempted between a 4 and 'It all depends...'

Poorly constructed sentence, not my first time :P

I meant (using 'meant' loosely :D) to say it works on stuff other than internal HDs

On my site http://www.rgdot.com...recovery-standard-2/

Tenorshare Data Recovery Standard is a straightforward tool to recover deleted files and not only files – documents, photos, video or music in 100s of formats -  from an internal hard drive but also from USB flash drives, media cards and any FAT or NTFS system. It also supports recovering damaged or formatted partitions and files in them.

And the excuse that people can't change the system lives on...while it might be true in some sense it is the same people who perpetuate it.

EDIT: Now I am off to another Politburo meeting, readying statements for both eventualities  :D

I have no connection of any kind to it but have enjoyed TreeProjects a lot, it's also mentioned a few times on OutlinerSoftware.com. It is a good option in my opinion.

Got to say that in these days of 8 and 16 GB of RAM, 90% of what I would need is open and stays open, much less need for shortcuts of any kind - bars, launchers, start menu, etc. My main PC is still an old XP but I am making a kind of generalization.

Not read this, just posting it: http://www.theverge....f-whats-really-going

It's never in doubt that any system, including Mexico's, is set up to protect the bigger guys and give them avenues to appeal (protect) themselves

Does this call for sending the Mexican dept a Christmas present?  ;D

Yes :D

Developer's Corner / Re: FTC to give $50,000 for robocall solution
« Last post by rgdot on November 01, 2012, 11:16 PM »
That's entirely in the phone companies' hands, they can disable that. As far as I understand it it's not like DNS, Mac addresses or anything. At least not in the plain old system, maybe VoIP complicates it.
I don't want to get political one more time but this robocall issue cannot become another excuse for the phone companies to pass another cost to the consumers. Call it some 'infrastructure spending' and then sorry another bill hike...

What?! Much like Friday The 13th the emperor and Vader didn't actually die?  :D

Both of those... Lucas?  Especially considering taking a look at the other side of that (Natalie Portman) in Star Wars vs other movies.  But don't take my word for it... check out Life as a Housew, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.  Look at Ep 4 and 6 vs. 5.  The difference?  Lucas.  Star Wars was a great (adaptation of an) idea.  But its success propelled him to a place where he could coast secure that he was better than he really is in other areas.

Thanks, will try to watch

Hayden Christiansen is actually a decent actor- don't take the Star Wars movies as indicative of what any of the actors can do.  Any of them that managed to bring any level of characterization to the roles did that in spite of his clunky dialog and inept direction, not because of the same.  Natalie Portman and Liam Neeson are both great actors also, and suffered from the same.

It's probably not fair that I base it on Star Wars and one other movie but based on those I disagree. For example when he is telling Padme to not believe the lies it seems so forced and unnatural, he couldn't even pull that off in my opinion. Similarly when he left Padme to go find his mother.

I find your lack of faith, disturbing...

 ;D   :P

Still a huge Star Wars fan but ...
I am in the camp that believes Episode I was too much 'video game' and Episode II too much 'soap opera'
And speaking of missteps he personally picked Hayden Christensen, correct?

Has happened to me more than a few times:
Using the pro version a site/IP gets blocked, another pc has the free one and visits that same site moments later. Scanning the pc with the free version finds nothing. I guess this is one form of false positive and as valuable as MBAM is I don't like this.

I could be mistaken, but I think the IP protection works only in the Pro version.  Thus, a PC with just the free version will not get warnings or IP blocking.  Also, Malwarebytes blocks IP addresses and ranges of IP addresses that are known to be used by malicious websites.  It's perfectly possible that the site you went to on the PC with MBAM's free version shares its IP address with malicious domains, and thus going to that IP address could result in malware being transferred to your computer, but it also could result in nothing bad happening.  The blocking is not really a false positive if the IP address is also used by malicious sites.  However, you can always instruct your copy of MBAM not to block a specific IP number, if you're confident that nothing bad will happen, even if the site shares its IP address with bad guys.  And if you're convinced that the IP address is not being shared with bad guys, you can also report the blockage as a false positive on the MBAM forum website.  They will investigate and either change their listing so the IP address is no longer blocked or explain to you why they feel it IS a malicious IP address.  Either way, they're good about explaining what they're doing, and you can override their judgment if you wish.

Yes the pro version does that. I understand your explanation about 'shared IP so maybe not that particular site'. My post wasn't so much about not liking MBAM itself but about how to manage its usage for the non techy. Non techy sees pro version blocking a site but when shown the site on a pc with free version no ill effects...

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service
« Last post by rgdot on October 30, 2012, 09:02 PM »
I know this is not adding anything to the discussion but.........uploading, downloading that much goes over the caps of (even) business accounts here, several times over in almost all cases. If you ask me online backup loses its practicality when it goes over 1 (yes just 1) GB.
1099
I also installed MBAM PRO on my other laptop that my daughter uses. Even if MBAM PRO potentially sometimes could be a bit conservative (e.g., "false positives" as suggested by @rgdot), I have not yet experienced that and anyway I could put up with that. B

I gladly put up with it too, MBAM has saved me more than all others (AVs, etc.) combined. Just said "don't like"  because people I have helped complain about what seems legitimate to them and I didn't see any adverse effects when using the free version.
