DcUpdater / Re: DCUpdater portable version?
« Last post by mouser on October 31, 2012, 07:34 PM »
There isn't really a portable version.. I suppose I could make one but let me suggest that for portable use,  best not to use dcupdater -- the only thing it does it help you download new versions, so it's not that useful.  Just check for updates within the donationcoder app and let it take you to the webpage to do the manual download.  DcUpdater doesn't save you enough steps to bother with using it portably.

Living Room / You thought those cheap no-name USB/Phone charger were safe?
« Last post by mouser on October 31, 2012, 06:34 PM »
Here's confirmation of your worst fears: Those no-name generic usb/phone chargers really are inferior -- and sometimes unsafe.

In a lengthy and detailed blog article, Ken Shirriff compares a dozen usb chargers and finds some real differences in terms of electrical quality and safety.  his bottom line: "don't buy a counterfeit charger; the price is great, but it's not worth risking your expensive device or your safety."

Can we make this thread a general hurricaine Sandy discussion thread?

My father is in NYC (lower manhattan) and still without power -- but is taking it in stride and says no big deal.

DC member app is in New Jersey (but not too close to shore) and has been offline since it hit.

An update:

I contacted CrashPlan as f0dder suggested, and mentioned the discussions on this forum about CrashPlan; I mentioned that I would like to post any reply to my email to the forum threads.

Somewhat surprisingly I got a reply right away saying they read the post and yes I could include their reply.  Already you have to give them a lot of credit for such a fast support reply and having someone reply who felt comfortable saying I could post their reply:

I do note that you are using our old default settings of 300kbps when away and 200kbps when present.  Please adjust these settings under Settings > Network to something that best suits your network. For reference, our new default is no limit for both present and away. Any computer created in CrashPlan after June or so (I quite honestly do not remember when we made the adjustment) will have the new defaults.

I was advised to adjust my Network tab Settings for "Limit sending rate" upward from what support person said was "old defaults" of around 300k.

Now I had already adjusted those settings under "LAN", which is what I thought was the setting appropriate for me.  But I went ahead and changed the "WAN" settings this time, and whammo I'm up to 500k/s (!)

So the WAN network speed setting was the solution for me -- and i'm a happy camper.

And I must say I'm decidedly more optimistic about CrashPlan now, given both the new upload speed and the speed+quality of the support reply I got.  :up:

Recent negative review of CrashPlan: http://goinside.com/...n-crashes-and-burns/

Also it should be said that CrashPlan has a support forum but its very obviously culled of negative stuff and kept virtually empty.. Another bad sign.

Another thing that really sucks about CrashPlan is the upload speed.. I'm regularly topping out at 30k/s.

Which is just further evidence that CrashPlan is probably best suited for people who have a bunch of computers to back up, but with very little data on each.

Finally the first user of the library!  :)
Welcome Zaq.

Ok so I'm assuming you are using one of my sample scripts as a starting point.  In that code look for a call to .upper() and remove that.  That's the call that is uppercaseing the string.

So for example in samples\codycards\2MakeImages.py,

change:
   title = pobj.get_propertyval("title","")
    title=title.upper()

to
   title = pobj.get_propertyval("title","")

should dock to side of screen fine -- just remember you have to UNDOCK first then drag to new dock place.

Thanks for posting this.  Friend got hit with a nasty virus the other day and the guides on removing it suggested MalwareBytes, which performed well.  One nice thing is that it is easy to use only on demand when you need it, rather than having it stay resident, which makes it a good secondary tool to have in addition to a resident antivirus.

I wanted to give another quick update after finally setting up an online backup service and using it for the last week.

[I went with CrashPlan but any online backup service would do fine, except to say that CrashPlan is well suited if you have a bunch of computers that you own and want to back them all up.]

Anyway, the main thing I wanted to report is simply that it's a real feeling of relief to have critical documents backed up online.  It's just one layer of redundant backup protection, but it was definitely a weak link in my prior setup if there was ever a fire/robbery.

I just want to encourage anyone who has been flirting with the idea of setting up an online backup but who hasn't done so yet, to go ahead and pull the trigger.  It truly is a set it and forget solution and it really does serve a purpose.

Hmm, it *should* remember the 100% setting and stay at 100% until you specifically check the "AutoFit" checkbox..

Cranioscopical, I must apologize, it seems your error was in fact a bug in v2.16.02, which has now been corrected in new version.  See https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=32668.0 for more info.  No need to download the new version since you have already restarted, which also fixes the error.
