kfitting, can you explain more.. i'm not sure what you are asking..

IF you are asking if SC can create still images of selected frames from a video file, then yes it can.
10604
System sound not just mic audio?

I'm not made of magic -- you'll be able to select your audio device line -- if your soundcard has a "mix" or "what you hear" input, then you'll be able to record system sound, otherwise you'll have to choose a mic input.

Again -- if you have real and regular need to record high quality screencast videos -- this tool is not for you! Get yourself a serious screencast tool, there are some excellent ones out there.

This is for quick and dirty screencast recordings for people who can't be bothered to install and learn a full tool, and/or who want a screencast tool that integrates quickly into Screenshot Captor.

Easy Screencast Recorder is a mini screencast recorder.
It can be used standalone or can be integrated into Screenshot Captor to easily record simple screencasts.

Download from:

v1.17.01 - May 30, 2017
  • [BugFix] Rewrote redbox overlay code to hopefully eliminate spurious displays of red on some recordings.
  • [BugFix] Repeated calls to select window to capture might not work if dll hooks are disabled in options.
  • [BugFix] Better error reporting.

v1.16.01 - May 25, 2017
  • [Improvement] High-DPI Windows (text size > 100%) is now supported well.
  • [Improvement] Installer now offers to run app after installation.
  • [Improvement] Options now accessible from system tray.
  • [BugFix] On windows 10 a remnant red overlay was seen when changing capture modes.
  • [BugFix] Another attempt to fix bug where Red region was stuck on screen for some people during recording; new kludge option that should absolutely solve it if you still see it.

v1.12.01 - April 22, 2015
  • [Feature] You can now set whether the main dialog stays on top of other windows or not.
  • [MinorFeature] Hotkey configuration box is now larger.

v1.11.01 - Sep 26, 2014
  • [BugFix] Trying to capture videos larger than about 2000x1014 could sometimes result in final output being resized to very small dimensions.
  • [BugFix] About box was going to wrong homepage.
  • [BugFix] Minor typos.
  • [Feature] Added option to check for updates on startup.

Basically it's intended to be a bare-bones simple screencast recorder for people who don't need a real screencast tool (I highly recommend most people get a real screencast tool which supports editing and callouts, etc.).

Simple interface:

Showing region area selection:

Showing countdown prior to recording start:

I use FARR and LBC for common stuff but i still have a deep start menu of EVERYTHING installed on the PC so that i can find things by category.

I think one of the problems is that most people dont know how to organize their start menu.  When organized it's a wonderful tool.
Instead of making it easier to organize, MS is trying to kill and hide it.  Very bad choice.

There is a real benefit to having a hierarchical organization of everything installed on the computer.

The thing is, from a programmer's perspective I actually think the generic "Tiling" approach is actually a smart improvement upon the ad hoc gadget approach to putting things on the desktop.

It seems to me it's much more maintainable and sustainable in the sense that it offers a clean way to put stuff on the screen in a way that trying to support arbitrarily shaped and sized gadgets is not.  It's a good example of choosing a simpler more reliable and maintainable solution over allowing everything under the sun.  And those simple-looking solid color tiles, again it's just a cleaner solution that suggest easier programming and UI consistency.

My major complaint against what Microsoft is doing is about their decision to make it so hard and confusing to switch between this tiled stuff and desktop view without these gadgets, and how ill-suited this approach is for a large start menu hierarchy, etc.

I think a much smarter approach would have been to leave the original taskbar, startmenu, system tray -- which to my way of thinking are excellent, and simply replace desktop icons with the tiling system, with a simple way to toggle tiles off to yield a blank desktop (or switch between tile sets); to me this would have been so much better than the confusing approach they have come up.

I can only hope they will realize that this tile/gadget/ipad/touch layout is only suitable for certain workflows, and make it more natural and intuitive to switch modes of operation.

I think that article makes some good points using a hefty dose of sarcasm.

You'll also find the more recent changes listed on the main forum thread for new FARR releases:
10610
It's at the bottom of the help file.

You can also find that online, if you go to the FARR web page, then click on the "Online Help/History" link, and then click on the "Version History" link at the bottom of that page

Frankly I had just about the exact same experience as that guy in the video, except with a lot more angry cursing, and general depression about the future of Microsoft.
10612
Ha! funny video -- I think I've seen it before but it's still funny.

Ok so it seems like the problem you are experiencing is actually a more general one, that the settings are not being saved when the computer reboots.  That's not good.  Can you check in the options on the first General Settings tab and make sure you dont have the checkbox checked labeled "Skip saving settings on logoff or system shutdown", and uncheck that if so.

If that box isn't checked, let me know so I know I've got a bug to solve.

even after selecting "Show on Taskbar" option in "Window Options"

did you make sure to restart FARR after changing that setting?

It works like a charm!

Great!

I can not quickly find is possibility to assign hotkey to "Engage Auto Capture Timer"

There is no hot key for this.. though there is a tray menu item for it.. I'm thinking about making a more generic hotkey system -- if so I will support it.

I've noticed that too on my pc.. can you check something for me -- if you try it several times in a row (maybe try it with excel already open), does it *sometimes* work?

Quick CrashPlan update:

I'm back to 40k/s speeds and occasional notices that backup has stopped for mystery reasons and that the next backup is scheduled for "18 hours from now" (despite initial backup not being done yet) with no way to nudge it to get started again and no hint as to why it's not running.

Regarding your other more general programming questions.. Best thing I can say is to just hang around the forum here -- there are lots of new coders just learning how to program here and you're in good company.

We even have a little event coming up at the end of the year that you might try to participate in, called NANY.

Screenshot Captor / Re: %num% counter does not function
« Last post by mouser on November 01, 2012, 12:26 PM »
I apologize that it's taking so long to get our a proper new release with the fix for this.

In the meantime I've just uploaded a new beta for you to try at:

The new beta does not change the function of the %num% field, but adds a new field %numinc%.

Let me explain the difference:
  • %num% - a 3 digit number that is AUTOMATICALLY generated and set as needed to avoid filename clashes.  So if a new screenshot filename would overwrite an existing one, SC will try finding a value for %num% that is unique, starting at 1 and going up from there to 999.  If %num% is found explicitly in the file name template, it will be used there, otherwise it will be added to the end to uniquify the filename if (and only if) needed.  Essentially this is all automatic -- the only reason the %num% field is exposed in the filename template is so that you can change its position in your filename if you want to.
  • %numinc% - a new 5 digit number that is only used if it is explicitly specified in the filename template.  If found, it is ALWAYS used, and its value is ALWAYS incremented, and is kept persistent between runs (even when you exit and restart SC).  It starts off at a value of 1 and can be manually changed in the "File Naming Template" tab. This will give a unique number to every capture if you use it.

So I hope you guys will try out the new %numinc% field and tell me if it does what you wanted.  Remember you have to explicitly go to the File Naming Template tab and add it to your filename template in order for it to be used.

For example:

So the static site is really self-contained html -- it does not use any php and is fully navigable? that's a pretty big win if so.

My apps have a built in ability to check for updates now (when you ask them to), they just can't download the update for you -- instead they will refer you to the webpage if you don't have dcupdater installed.

However, as you suggest, FARR plugins are not included in this -- only dcupdater knows about farr plugins; you'll have to get those manually.
10623
Can you talk a little bit about what you mean by the option to generate a static copy of the site?
It sounds like an awesome feature for people who want top speed or who want to be able to create a dynamic site locally but only upload static pages to a cloud-like host.
10624
Love the website, very clean.
