Find And Run Robot / Re: Having trouble installing and using plugins
« Last post by mouser on November 19, 2012, 06:58 PM »
The CZB pack can do some very cool things, but it's unusual and can be confusing to set up.
In addition to installing the CZB pack itself, which it sounds like you did fine, you also need to install the FSubScript plugin:
http://czb.dcmembers...cript/FSubScript.zip

Only then will the plugins like jscalc respond.

If you look back at the original CZB Pack post you'll see that listed in the "Requirements" fineprint.. A bit hard to spot.

JSCalc is quite powerful and will let you create your own functions, but you could also try my fcalc calculator plugin:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=8769.0

It's a little more straightforward, with less bells and whistles but it does a good job with the basics.

Just type "fc EXPRESSION" to trigger it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Thoughts on this sort of UI styling?

Personally I tend to favor very traditional windows gui interfaces, but I think that screenshot looks absolutely great.
Having the 4 steps so clearly delineated, each one with a short title and then some explanatory text.

I think it's really great.

My only warning with such approaches is that what works great with a few choices can become completely unusable as options grow -- that's where the non-traditional user interfaces always seem to bite back.

That tool as you have it above worked fine for me (XP x64); I wonder if it could be a problem with me not handling new OS thing right.  What OS are you on?  And when you say you can't get it to work properly, what exactly do you mean.

Looks terrific.  Can we get a commandline invocation method where we can pass it a file path? If so a .sctool could be created for my Screenshot Captor tool, which would be nice.

Can we begin to wind this one down now?

I think with the new system we have in place, which alerts us when people change their profiles or edit posts to include spam, we have a pretty good way to spot spammers, and I'd rather not add additional hurdles for new posters to jump through.

This was simply a case where a moderator jumped the gun and should have more carefully read the posts and given the benefit of the doubt to the poster.  With our new alert system it's not a big deal if we don't catch a potential spammer right away so we can afford to be less trigger-happy.

I think the better solution is as I said earlier, a clear notice to users whose accounts have been banned about what has happened and a way to contact us if we are wrong.  Many of us, if we found ourselves suddenly banned for spamming a forum that we didn't spam on, would contact the forum and say "wtf?!!!!"  but I can understand that some people would just walk away angry.  We can't guarantee that premature banning will never happen again, but we can make it much easier for people to contact us in such a case.

Couple of points:

I'm finding it hard to follow much of what you are saying and I can't say I get the warmest feeling from the posts you have made recently,

BUT:

As I understand it, you have now posted the content of 2 messages of yours that were deleted.

And I do see that the account you used to post those two messages above was in fact banned by a moderator in November 2011 because they concluded your account was spamming, when looking at your posts it seems to me that they were not spam.

I can kind of see why the moderator may have thought you were spamming -- you signed up and then made 2 giant posts within 2 hours of each other.  Your account was not banned because of the content of your posts, it was banned because we were over eager in thinking you were a spammer.

From looking at the posts it seems clear you were not spamming and your account should not have been banned.

I apologize for that. It should not have happened.

I wish we had been made aware of the problem at the time as we would have removed the ban right away.

I can understand why having that account banned with no explanation would have given you a bad feeling about our site, and a feeling that we were trying to censor your posts.  Especially if you took a long time writing those long posts (ironically the length of those two posts was no doubt part of what made the moderator suspect it was spam).

Please do feel free to re-post those 2 posts that were deleted.

Again let me encourage you and anyone else who feels they were incorrectly labeled a spammer to contact me about it.  Realize that we deleted dozens of spammers a day whose only purpose is to post advertising on this forum.  Often such spammers are obvious, but sometimes they employ tricks that we have adapted to and implemented special alerts to catch.  But we're not infallible, and there's always the possibility that we have jumped the gun.  Perhaps one thing we can put in place now is a message to those whose accounts have been banned with clearer info on who to contact if they feel they were wrongly banned.

one does wonder if it might not pay to wait for the black friday deals.
having said that, i have found the core2duo cpu's to be quite satisfactory; the i3/i5/i7 next generation cpus are obviously better but honestly very few people have need for them.

Good form factor for portability.

Looks like I'm the first to make a Gadget post.

Here's mine for this week, a Vacuum Food Sealer:

Screenshot - 11_16_2012 , 6_58_58 AM - cap 00075.png

The idea of a vacuum food sealer is to remove the air and thus preserve foods for longer, and keep frozen foods from developing ice crystals.

Do they work? Consensus on the web seems to be yes they do prolong life of foods, and my personal experience backs that up -- but I wouldn't say they are miracle workers and I wouldn't say you are guaranteed to save money using them unless you store lots of bulk food.

For the irrational gadget lover they are wonderful things, because they make noise, require the purchase of accessory supplies (bags), and give you a serious gadget satisfaction when you use them.

I have had one for a few years and use it regularly.  I tend to make food in batches and freeze some and it's very satisfying to use the device.

I have a FoodSaver brand, forget the model but it's middle of the road.

Hmm I didn't realize local time zone affects what is displayed, perhaps I should fix that.. But the answer is *no* -- we are enforcing a single timezone rule here, so you have to wait for Friday as defined by Central Standard Time.

Living Room / Gadget WEEKENDS
« Last post by mouser on November 15, 2012, 09:09 PM »
I propose we have a thread where we can recommend gadgets that we like, but I suggest we follow some strict rules to make things more interesting.

Here are the rules:

  • 1. You may ONLY post about ONE gadget per week, and only on a FRIDAY WEEKEND.
  • 2. Every gadget item post must include an attached image of the gadget.
  • 3. Every gadget item posted about should be for sale somewhere; you may include a purchase link with an affiliate/referral id.
  • 4. You must personally OWN the item you are posting about.
  • 5. The goal is to introduce gadget addicts to new discoveries.

NOTE: You can make posts on this thread on any day to discuss the items posted about by others - the rules and restriction above only apply to making new posts introducing new gadgets.

The first Gadget FRIDAY WEEKEND starts in 3 hours!
(remember, you can't post on any other day except when forum time, in upper-right corner of page, says it's a Friday).

Afraid so.

Find And Run Robot / Re: How to show results in alphabetical order

First, Welcome to the site freddo.

Second, I'm assuming this is a question about Find and Run Robot, so I'm going to move this thread over to the FARR section.

Third, can you elaborate a little bit? Alias contents should show their results exactly in the order they are listed in the Alias.

Developer's Corner / The unique excitement of coding something emergent
« Last post by mouser on November 14, 2012, 10:21 PM »
I've been meaning to write this post for a while -- a post aimed at new coders.

I want to write a little about the unique excitement and satisfaction that comes from writing code with the capacity to surprise you.

I think fiction writers often get this kind of satisfaction when the characters in their stories start to take on a life of their own and the writer can stand back and marvel at what happens.

There are lots of programming projects that have this flavor of emergent interactions with the ability to surprise.  Most games have this flavor, where enemies and non-player characters interact in ways that you didn't anticipate.  And of course most simulations have this flavor.

So this is my post encouraging new programmers to find a little project that is like a little simulation -- interacting components that can product outcomes that you can't predict.

Some good places to get started might be implementing Conway's Game of Life, or the Mandelbrot set, or just pick any simulation-based game like sim city and try to code the absolute simplest little form of it.
