Even more impressive considering NASA, despite being the longest running space program, can't seem to even get a space station resupply package into orbit lately. :-\

Quebec will eventually realize that you can't wall the world out. You can only wall yourself in.

Sounds more like laziness than anything else to me.

Sounds more like these companies don't want to get dragged into Canada's political/social pissing match. They just want to do business. And these companies aren't setting any conditions on that. Quebec is.

Guys, if you find yourself in a situation where you are in a legal battle with microsoft, these clauses are not going to be your primary problem.  Your primary problem will be raising a few billion dollars to pay your legal fees.  :-\

Nailed It!!! ...David and Goliath was a fun little fairy tail ... That's never gonna happen..

All the more reason to not make it any easier for them than necessary. And their invulnerability not a foregone conclusion. The EFF and OSF have got them to back off on more than one occasion. Microsoft is like any predator. It would rather not risk injury if at all possible. If they think a legal precedent might get set that would work against them, their legal strategy has always been to back off and render the allegations against them moot rather than duke it out.

But better yet, why not just say: "Thanks - but no thanks." 8)

I have no idea what I expected the comet to look like, but it doesn't look like what I would have expected.

Very neat pics.

That seems to be the consensus of almost everybody. Scientists included.

I've been using the bitdefender version based on your recommendation for a couple of months now.  It's good.  My only complaints so far have been:
--you must give a *working* email for the program to not nag you; even the paid-for version.

Do what I do. Set up an @live or @gmail account purely for all those pesky people that insist on a valid e-mail address. Open it at least once a month to keep it active. Periodically trash everything in it except for registration acknowledgements, license keys, and other genuinely useful messages. End of problem. No worries.

--it's chinese

Is it really any more dangerous coming from a non-American developer than an un-American ;) one? Or really any other nationality these days? They all seem to be in bed with their respective government's spy & surveillance agencies - with our own biggies leading the stampede.

--sometimes it can be a little too simplistic.  as in, in their effort to make it very easy to use, some of the more powerful options are in odd places.

Good point. The pro version has a more traditional dashboard like all the other majors do. The freebie control panel is rather simplistic. But you can still get to pretty much anything you need if you have to.

^ It's a little more tricky than it looks.

Basically, under this wording, if you are using .NET and you ever assert an IP claim against Microsoft for any reason, you automatically become a provable infringer on Microsoft’s IP because their "personal promise" is automatically withdrawn. So in short,: use .NET, try to sue us, and you're now an infringer.

So while your infringement claim remains to be proven, Microsoft’s infringement claim against you is already established.

Two guesses who would win in a tit-for-tat legal confrontation like that regardless of the merits? (Hint: bigger is usually the winner in IP infringement cases.)

That's a win-win for Microsoft. Their IP is fully protected either way. Your IP protection is anybody's guess.

My current favorite is BitDefender. Either the "free for personal" or paid-for Pro.

I use the pro version myself, supplemented by occasional on-demand scans with Malwarebytes Antimalware and/or Super Antimalware.

This trio (along with staying current with Windows Update) seems to catch everything that's catch-able so far (knock wood).

Huh?!? I just about creamed myself there.

Embrace. Extend. Extinguish. Once again.  :-\

This I worry about. We'll see though.

However, this time around it won't be so obvious. We'll need to be much more alert.

Interesting patent verbiage from Microsoft on this (full text here):

Microsoft Patent Promise for .NET Libraries and Runtime Components
Microsoft Corporation and its affiliates ("Microsoft") promise not to assert
any .NET Patents against you for making, using, selling, offering for sale,
importing, or distributing Covered Code, as part of either a .NET Runtime or
as part of any application designed to run on a .NET Runtime.
If you file, maintain, or voluntarily participate in any claim in a lawsuit
alleging direct or contributory patent infringement by any Covered Code, or
inducement of patent infringement by any Covered Code, then your rights under
this promise will automatically terminate.

This promise is not an assurance that (i) any .NET Patents are valid or
enforceable, or (ii) Covered Code does not infringe patents or other
intellectual property rights of any third party. No rights except those
expressly stated in this promise are granted, waived, or received by
Microsoft, whether by implication, exhaustion, estoppel, or otherwise.

This is a personal promise directly from Microsoft to you, and you agree as a
condition of benefiting from it that no Microsoft rights are received from
suppliers, distributors, or otherwise from any other person in connection with
this promise.

A couple of things:

(1) I don't know what the legal ramifications of "a personal promise" are. But it apparently isn't the same thing as a" contract" or a "guarantee" - otherwise why make such a distinction? Pretty vague if you ask me. Be interesting to see how something like that would play out in court if push came to shove.

(2) If you discover something in .Net that you think is infringing on one of your patents, it looks like you waived the "personal promise" not to be sued for infringement of Microsoft's claimed patents on .Net

That's a bit of a double-bind that gets Microsoft neatly off the hook either way.

If it does turn out to be genuine, I will be a very happy camper! :D

That seems to be more the case with the Windows dev crowd than the Linux developers and maintainers - except for the Mono project, which is generally regarded as a "trojan project."

But time will tell.

I'm sure the in-house biz devs will be happy hearing this since they can now more easily port their proprietary .Net apps over to a less expensive OS. Won't their bean counters and upper management be pleased to hear that! :-\

Manga U has a nice collection of Tachikawa nibs and holders they offer as The Ultimate Manga Pen Set for $25.

The set consists of 4 holders and 14 nibs. A good value IMO if ink is your thing. I'm more the Faber-Castell or Sakura type.

I've also found the Pilot Razorpoint II pen to be an excellent choice for cartooning or general drawing. Nice solid black ink, good feel - and very inexpensive.

"How do I turn it on/off?
You can turn off Enhanced Tiles by clicking on the gear icon on the top right corner of the new tab page, and selecting Classic to show only unenhanced History Tiles or Blank mode, which turns the Tiles off. "

"What data is being collected and why?
Only information about Directory and Enhanced Tiles on a user’s new tab page is being collected to help offer the most interesting sites to new Firefox users and improve recommendations for existing Firefox users. All the information is aggregated and does not include a way to distinguish between unique users. We are collecting data to make sure the tiles are delivering value for our users and advertising partners, and are only collecting the data we need to determine that.

I find it interesting that you can turn the 'enhanced' tiles off - but nothing at all is being said about how to turn Mozilla's data collecting 'feature' off.

Looks like Mozilla borrowed a page from the OpenCandy playbook.

BTW is "enhanced" now a new synonym for "sponsored"?

I just wanted to take a minute to thank all those who served - and are serving - wherever they may be.

Although I sometimes disagree with, or am sceptical of  the reasons given for deploying military personnel, I nevertheless have a good deal of admiration for those who act on their beliefs and are willing to put their lives on the line for others.

So once again ladies and gentlemen, I thank you.

What's wrong with browser-based?

Nada really.

Browser based email makes some sense if it's a POP3 account that needs to be accessed by multiple machines such as a home and work based PC. Leaving messages on the server until deleted keeps a POP3 inbox in sync if you're careful. But there's no setting you can enable to get the same with your outbox - unless you resort to the ungainly hack of copying yourself on all outgoing messages.  So web-based email makes sense since it gets you some of what an IMAP account will give you regardless.

Blast from the past (1978). Genya Ravan, a lady who set the tone and look - and raised the bar - for a lot of what came after.

Not a video proper. But still a great song. Here's Genya and Lou Reed doing Aye Co'lorado from her Urban Desire album:

That's very weird. Sounds like your power management settings may be screwed up. Try resetting PM to the default and see if the problem improves. Once you're there you can customize power plans and settings via the control panel. I have everything set to high performance when running on AC.

Per Science Daily:

The research published in PLOS ONE was initially funded by the U.S. Army Research Office and the UW, with additional support from the Keck Foundation.

Is anybody all that surprised? I mean, seriously?

(And they assured us that  MKUltra was dead!)

We are soooo pwned... :tellme:
