Developer's Corner / Re: Why C++ Is Not “Back”
« Last post by mouser on December 02, 2012, 02:05 PM »
For me, the major problem with the new C++0x is that it's hard for me to see the audience for it.  It seems to me to be almost a last gasp that is going to turn into more of a poison pill..

C++ is my native language -- i've been coding in c++ for 25+ years, and I still love it.

But I just don't see the new stuff being added as satisfying anyone.

If you really want to dig into the more modern programming language ideas.. you are not going to want all of the legacy backward-compatibility messiness that C++ is committed to supporting.  The backward compatibility is one of the real strengths of C++ but it makes the language much less clean.

And on the other side of the coin, if you are coding in C++ because of the backward compatibility stability and large code bases, and are attracted to the lean and mean C++ principles, then all of these new features in C++0x are probably not only things you weren't wanting, but may cause you some concern that you're now going to have more incompatibility issues with old compilers, etc.

It seems to me that the new C++0x may really just hasten the extinction of C++.  I'm just hopefull it will help inspire the next breed of programming languages.

Welcome to the site Peter

Yes, what you can do is easy.  Just go to the hotkeys tab, and right-click to create a new hotkey entry, or just edit the one for Ctrl+Space.

Then configure that hotkey so that in the "Text for Search Edit Box" is the next you'd like to start out on the FARR search line when it triggers; in your case whatever initial text you need to launch a web search.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: How to have docked launchbar not take up entire edge?
« Last post by mouser on December 02, 2012, 01:43 AM »
Once selected, you should be able to use Ctrl+Arrows to resize some dimensions, but i think i need to add the ability to modify the non-fullsize dimensions now.

Glad to hear the new feature is being used by someone

ps.
your screenshot was too small to see! you can ATTACH images to forum posts.

N.A.N.Y. 2013 / Re: NANY 2013 Pledge - Progress Bars of Life
« Last post by mouser on December 02, 2012, 01:21 AM »
I don't know why i like to watch progress bars, but I do.

well then this tool is for you.

Progress Bars of Life lets you create a set of custom progress bars that will graphically show the progress towards different events in your life.

You can create as many progress bars as you like, and display them in various ways -- for example, docked to the edge of a screen and always visible, or invisible and shown on command.

Create progress bars that show things like how close you are to the weekend, to your birthday, to your graduation, to your due date, until your death, till the end of the current hour, etc.

Just finished Mafia 2 -- *LOVED* it.  Felt like living in a gangster film.  Definitely up there with my top 5 video game experiences.  I remember feeling similarly after playing Mafia 1.  It's the total atmosphere -- the music, the graphics, the story, the gameplay, everything.  It feels like you are living in a movie like the Godfather.

Ok my gadget for today is a combo:

First, a low-tech invention that has no doubt been perfected over the ages, an Apple Peeler/Corer:

http://www.amazon.co...eeler/dp/B0000DE2SS/

Second, a food dehydrator:

Using these two in combination I have been making dehydrated green apple slices, and they are a delicious healthy snack.

Lots of different brands of both of those available everywhere -- I don't have a particular reason to prefer one brand over the other.

DesktopCoral / Re: Desktop Coral Change Borders
« Last post by mouser on November 30, 2012, 04:41 PM »
Normally what you would do is get it where you want it, and the size how you want it, and then set it to 0 Opacity from options to make it completely invisible with no borders at all.  The only time you would want to see borders is when you are changing the sizing of the dock it.

Does that work / make sense? Or is it possible that on the new OS's you always see a border even if Opacity is 0?

Let's assume for a minute that the request is for an automatic random track generating tool, rather than a tool to let you draw such tracks manually.  Drawing them by hand in the manor Tomos described might be the most practical solution but let's say you wanted a tool for making random tracks..

For anyone who was interested in an excuse to experiment with the "Processing" graphics-focused programming language, this idea would probably be perfect for it.

I'm thinking that the desire to have the track be a "loop" means that your best strategy might be to start with a circle and basically add curves to it, rather than just drawing a random path and trying to connect the ends up at the end.

I recommend if you want to use my Easy Screencast Recorder that you install a free lossless codec that is optimized for screen recording:

So I did think of a kind of unique feature I could will add to ESR that could be useful.  I don't know if any other screen video recording tool has it.

The idea is a mode where it records continuously, but deletes anything older than say 1 minute.

With that mode, you could basically start recording in anticipation of some event, without worrying about file size growing too large, and just stop recording after the event occurs.

It would be useful for capturing events that are somewhat unpredictable, like a bug that crashes a program, etc.

Hi Musubi,

I'm so sorry I didn't reply to your post earlier.

I've uploaded a new beta version, and if you have more suggestions I'd be interested in hearing them.

Point Motivator / Point Motivator 1.09.01 beta - Nov 29,2012
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2012, 09:54 PM »
I've uploaded a new beta, I'd be interested in feedback:

v1.09.01 BETA - November 29. 2012
  • [Improvement] Item editor now remembers last file being edited and loads it by default, and loads user sample on first use.
  • [Improvement] Sample items are now moved to user item directory to make it easier for user to get started editing custom items.
  • [MajorFeature] Executable and setup are now digitally signed for extra security; instead of a zip-compatible installer, there are now 2 separate downloads for installer and portable version.
  • [Feature] New daily points options, lets you configure certain amount of points to be added each day and a decay of existing points.  Good for daily spending of points -- for example if dieting.

Daily Points feature options:

Point Motivator / Re: I cannot delete or modify entries??
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2012, 08:20 PM »
I think perhaps something as simple as by default loading a new user-defined file in the definitions editor rather than a blank screen there might make it more intuitive for the first time user.

I'm changing it so the sample file is copied into user directory as their first editable sample file, and that will load by default when they launch editor for the first time.

So someone who doesnt work with multiple files can just basically never have to worry about item files, they can just use the one they start out with.

Point Motivator / Re: I cannot delete or modify entries??
« Last post by mouser on November 29, 2012, 07:17 PM »
if I right click on a catagory the menu offers the option to delete or modify the catagory. I've tried both and absolutely nothing happens. I've tried it with the user defined catagory and the sample ones. Is this the same for everyone or should I re-install or something?

Actually you can modify and delete and add items, but NOT using the right-click context menu -- I'm not sure why that right-click menu in the main dialog pretends you can.  Ignore that.  You have to open the Item Definition Editor and option the definition file that holds those items in order to modify or delete or add those.

I ran Point Motivator for the first time in a while.. I forgot how much work I put into that program! What a shame that it proved useless to most people.. I have a habit of making elaborate programs like that (see my Web Link Captor for another extreme example).

However, it's probably still worth a minor update.

will renaming be part of this?

if so, are we saying it might be possible to rename a pdf file based on the text content in the file -- like on the article title and author?  i've long wanted such a thing for downloaded academic articles, which are often named things like fdj4893dfjk48.pdf
