From http://www.thesun.co...ks-by-guide-cat.html

SNN2833CAT--_1644371a.jpg

Eight-year-old Terfel kept bumping into things and spent most of his time stuck in his basket after being diagnosed with cataracts.

Then owner Judy Godfrey-Brown let a stray cat into her home — and was amazed by what happened next.

The puss, named Pwditat, walked up to Terfel and led him out of his basket and into the garden. She has been helping him find his way around ever since.

Efnet/Irc/Chat seems to be working again.

Quite a few of us in there celebrating our local new years events live.  Not exactly as much fun as having a glass of champagne with the person you have been crushing on all year, but if you don't have other plans, hit the Chat button up at the top of this screen (or click here) and join us.

Happy new year to all of you.

For me this site is like an extended family and it makes me so happy and grateful to know all of you strange and interesting characters.

I'm so grateful for being able to meet all of you, and grateful for all of the different and unusual personalities.. and grateful that we have continued to get along and create things and inspire each other.

I'm also excited for the coming year -- I feel like it's finally time for us to evolve a bit here and that I'm ready to put some more effort into making the site do a better job of being a constructive and productive force, and ready to ask for more help from all of you in making those changes.  I'm not sure what exactly that means but I'm excited to find out.

I can't thank Hally enough for her amazing design.  (We would be remiss for not also thanking long time DC member stephen66515 for introducing us to his significant other).

Autofit does not really work (yet?) -- it only sort of works for floating window, and then only sometimes.

Ok so NANY participants will be able to choose from 2 mug designs this year.  The classic NANY mug design, by Nudone, which we all love:

And the new mug design from Hally, which is truly amazing:

I wanted to post a quick note.

If you want to upload and share screencasts via YouTube, the simplest and best results can be had by recording in WEBM format, and following the Easy Screencast Recording help instructions for configuring recording in webm format, which i repeat here:

For WebM recording you need a few things.  Following instructions on http://www.webmproject.org/tools/ do:
  • Run install_webmdshow.exe from webmdshow-*.zip obtained via: http://code.google.com/p/webm/downloads/list
  • Run opencodecs_*.exe obtained via: http://www.xiph.org/dshow/
  • Choose "WebM" as recording file type, then Compress on the Fly, then Video Codec Engine="Webm/google" (this may not be important), Audio Compression Engine="Xiph Org Vorbis".  You *may* also have to set the custom Multiplexer to "WebM Muxer Filter".

Once you have that setup, you will get excellent quality recording with very small files, and they can be directly uploaded to youtube without any issue.

I've restored the DonationCoder version of the file, so the link should be fixed now (you can also download from cnet).
Sorry about any inconvenience.

Fellow coders, you have until the clock turns to january 1st, 2013 according to forum time (central standard time), to post a publicly accessible version of your NANY apps.

You are free to release updates after that, but you should have a publicly useable stable version of your software up by then.

Good luck in your final hours!

General Software Discussion / Re: Good coding conventions - Discussion
« Last post by mouser on December 30, 2012, 01:41 PM »
40hz said the most important thing, imho, and where i often fail, to my deteriment:
My only suggestion is that whatever coding conventions you adopt, you use them consistently.

Particularly when it comes to variable and function naming -- pick a convention and stick with it.

I suppose when it comes to style choices, my view is to always aim for clarity and avoid cleverness.

Cleverness always ends up meaning "hard to maintain" in the long run.

Most things are clearer in 3 lines of code than crammed into 1 line.  Choose the 3 line way.

In a similar vein, don't be afraid of nice long variable names and function names.. I personally have no problem with names made up of whole long phrases.

And my #1 suggestion to new coders:  Look for places where you repeat yourself.. When you find such an occurrence, that's your signal that you need to restructure your code and use a function or object.  Avoid repetition of code and you are half way there.

If you want to try to meditate on good coding -- from my stand point it all boils down to writing code so that it's easy to MAINTAIN (modify, extend, etc.).  You should always be organizing code so that it would be easy to change how something works.  The more likely you are going to actually need to change something, the more you need to modularize your code around that component to make it easier to replace that piece of code.

I think at some point you are better off backing everything up and then starting with a fresh install of Windows, rather than doing major uninstallations of dozens of apps.
