Living Room / Re: You like science fiction, don't you? Of course you do!

I've read "Consider Phlebas", "The Player of Games" and "Use of Weapons". Good, action-packed scifi.

The Sheriff pulled up next to the guy unloading garbage out of his pick-up into the ditch. The Sheriff asked, "Why are you dumping garbage in the ditch? Don't you see that sign right over your head."

"Yep," he replied. "That's why I'm dumpin' it here, 'cause it says: 'Fine For Dumping Garbage.' "

A Tennessee State trooper pulled over a pickup on I-65. The trooper asked, "Got any ID?"
The driver replied, "Bout whut?"

A man in South Carolina had a flat tire, pulled off on the side of the road, and proceeded to put a bouquet of flowers in front of the car and one behind it. Then he got back in the car to wait.
A passerby studied the scene as he drove by, and was so curious he turned around and went back. He asked the fellow what the problem was.
The man replied, "I got a flat tahr."
The passerby asked, "But what's with the flowers?"
The man responded, "When you break down they tell you to put flares in the front and flares in the back. I never did understand it neither."

A senior citizen in Louisiana was overheard saying ... "When the end of the world comes, I hope to be in Louisiana ."
When asked why, he replied, "I'd rather be in Louisiana 'cause everythang happens in Louisiana 20 years later than in the rest of the world."

The owner of a golf course in Georgia was confused about paying an invoice, so he decided to ask his secretary for some mathematical help.
He called her into his office and said, "Y'all graduated from the University of Georgia and I need some help. If I wuz to give yew $20,000, minus 14%, how much would you take off?"
The secretary thought a moment, and then replied, "Everthang but my earrings."

A Florida senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 mph, Enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.
"Amazing," he thought as he flew down I-95, pushing the pedal even more.

Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Florida State Trooper, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 mph, then 110, Then 120. Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!"
And pulled over to await the trooper's arrival.

Pulling in behind him, the trooper got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding--a reason I've never before heard -- I'll let you go."

The old gentleman paused then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida State Trooper. I thought you were bringing her back.

"Have a good day, Sir," replied the trooper.

http://www.seanpercival.com/blog/2013/06/03/how-to-survive-the-series-a-crunch-from-someone-who-didnt/

Recently I had to step down from my own startup for a few reasons, the main one being #1 on that list above: Don’t run out of money. Once I stumbled on that point, I found it tough to regain my footing with the business. So while the “Series A Crunch” was not the entire reason for my failure, it was a major contributor. It set off a chain of events that left me holding nothing but thoughts of how I could have done things differently.

The best advice I can give founders here is to ignore the cries for more traction, especially when it would hurt your business or deplete your cash to satisfy those demands. Buy yourself more time and make the investors wait. They hate waiting, and as a result you may miss a train or two, but if you can emerge with a more sustainable (or profitable) business, your fund-raising needs will quickly move from “we need cash to pay rent” to “we don’t really need your cash, but we’ll take it to grow even bigger.”

Porn Is Now Banned on Google Glass

http://mashable.com/2013/06/04/glass-porn-ban/

The first pornographic app recently appeared for Google Glass, but it will be a short-lived affair, as Google has changed its Glass Platform Developer Policies last week, prohibiting apps that contain sexually explicit content.

The first paragraph of the "Content policies" section now reads: "We don't allow Glassware content that contains nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material. Google has a zero-tolerance policy against child pornography. If we become aware of content with child pornography, we will report it to the appropriate authorities and delete the Google Accounts of those involved with the distribution."

The app that possibly prompted the change is called Tits & Glass, which allowed users to watch sexually explicit photos and videos. The company behind the app, MiKandi, was very happy with the initial response, claiming that nearly 10,000 unique visitors visited TitsAndGlass.com in a day. MiKandi also said it was interested in going a step further and using Google Glass to facilitate "two-way adult interaction".

Thanks for that excerpt, 40. I have the Hellraiser books (haven't read yet). Mental note: read "Tortured Souls: The Legend of Primordium" after the Hellraiser books.

Finished the 10-book Abyssal Plague series, and since then have read all 10 T. H. Lain books, ending with The Death Ray.

I work with several autistic clients in my practice, and I can tell you that, generally speaking, autism-spectrum-disorder sufferers tend to have a techno-penchant; some of the best computer programmers suffer some degree of autism-spectrum symptoms.

yes -- i just read that post as an attempt to "retaliate" on the other side in response to the uniform one.

Gee Mouser, don't hold back, tell us how you really feel!

The following in general commentary, folks, and NOT directed at any particular site member(s)...

This is WHY Mouser created the Basement, folks. I'll give you a parallel example: video-stores (some of them, at least) used to have a "back room" where the x-rated materials were kept. A sign above the door to that room clearly warned of the contents inside and for those under the age of 18, and those who find such material degrading/insulting, from entering. That was the responsible thing to do, just as using the Basement for religious/political satire/criticism/diatribes/"it seems harmlessly funny to me" posts is appropriate here.

I think the easiest way to avoid those oops, I didn't mean to offend... moments on threads is to ask yourself, "Is my post in any way about a religious figure or movement, or a political figure/movement/party/philosophy? Does it tease/mock/ridicule a sexual orientation? If so, just either don't post it at all, or at least post it in the Basement.

There is a prevailing attitude in the world today, in my opinion, that says, You don't like it? **** you and the horse you rode in on! We're aiming for a higher-caliber of consideration for others' sensibilities here at DoCo.  That notwithstanding, there will always be those who get angry and sarcastic whenever anyone dares to suggest that something they posted was inappropriate.

A few hundred emails about rectal itch is excessive.

 ;D

Ooh, I see the beginning of a "100 emails of THIS sort is excessive" list:

  • A few hundred emails about rectal itch is excessive.
  • A few hundred emails about enlarging your phallus is excessive.
  • A few hundred emails about "Greetings from Bangladesh. I family relative. You must need contact me for unsuspected inheritance" is excessive.

Living Room / Google Buys A Quantum Computer

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/16/google-buys-a-quantum-computer/?smid=tw-nytimesbits&seid=auto

Google and a corporation associated with NASA are forming a laboratory to study artificial intelligence by means of computers that use the unusual properties of quantum physics. Their quantum computer, which performs complex calculations thousands of times faster than existing supercomputers, is expected to be in active use in the third quarter of this year.

The Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab, as the entity is called, will focus on machine learning, which is the way computers take note of patterns of information to improve their outputs. Personalized Internet search and predictions of traffic congestion based on GPS data are examples of machine learning. The field is particularly important for things like facial or voice recognition, biological behavior, or the management of very large and complex systems.

Those on the autistic spectrum often display highly focused and analytical traits. SAP is the latest company – and the first major multinational – to move to harness these characteristics for IT-related work.

I think a Guidelines sticky thread would be a good addition. When someone joins the forum, they should be forwarded to the Guidelines page first-thing.

I'm still here because this forum is one (1) of the very few that allows expression of differences without personal bias or discrimination.

I completely appreciate that comment, and I support free speech. I also, however, think that a web forum is like a public building. Is it smoking or non-smoking? Is loitering allowed. Is there a sign that says, Please use other door? Every environment has a culture that comes to be accepted because the majority of those in that environment support the expressions of that culture.

*Shrug* Just my 2 cents.

Did this really happen to you? Or are you just sharing something you got in your e-mail with us?
