Wow. Lots of licensing stuff lately.

This is my usual section for that:

10. ASSIGNMENT AND NON-ASSIGNMENT

If you are an individual and this Agreement is for a single license, then this license is personal to you but you may assign your rights under this Agreement to a third party who agrees in writing to be bound to this Agreement prior to the assignment and provided that you transfer all copies of the Software, registration keys and/or codes, and related documentation to the third party and destroy any copies not transferred. If you are an individual and this Agreement is for a multi-user license, or you are not an individual and are an entity, then you may not assign your rights under this Agreement without the prior written permission of the Company. If you are an entity that merges with or is acquired by another entity then your rights under this Agreement shall be deemed to be temporarily assigned to the resulting entity of that merge or acquisition provided that you supply the Company with written notice not later than the date on which any public announcement of that merger or acquisition is made.  Upon receipt of written notice, the Company shall have thirty (30) days to either accept or reject the assignment of rights.

That is very generous compared to most.

The thing is that you need to be fair to people and treat them well. If I buy a book and give it to someone, it's the same thing.

As an author, you need to reserve some rights, but that doesn't mean that you need to treat people badly. Most people are honest. If you can help the honest people stay honest, then that's probably enough. The dishonest ones will figure a way to be dishonest anyways, so why bother? Instead of treating everyone like a thief, you can treat people with respect and hope that they return the favor.

The machine license thing just stinks of greed to me. I know developers that will NOT allow you to run their software on more than 1 machine even if it's only for you. (In some cases this is justified, but not usually for desktop software.)

This is my usual EULA for that:

The Company grants you a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide right and license to use the executable version of the Software, where “use” in this Agreement means storing, loading, installing or executing the Software.  You may not modify the Software or disable any licensing or control features of the Software. You agree that you may not copy the written materials accompanying the Software.  You may copy the software for archival purposes so long as the copy is unmodified from the original distribution and the copy retains all of the original Software’s proprietary notices. You may not rent or lease your rights to the Software or documentation. If you are an individual and this Agreement is for a single license, you may install the Software on multiple computers provided that not more than one of those computers is in use simultaneously and that those computers are solely for your own use. If the Software license you have is for a single user license then the Software may be installed on a computer that is for multiple users but it may not be installed on more than one computer regardless of whether those computers are operated simultaneously or not. If this Agreement is for a multi-user (site) license, the number of computers on which the Software is installed may not exceed the number of licenses purchased, regardless of whether the computer is used by multiple users or not. You may use this software in a networked environment on computers other than the computer on which the software is installed provided that you have purchased licenses for each computer that will use the software, regardless of whether those computers will use the software at the same time or not.

It's pretty fair as far as I can see. I like to sell to "people", and not to machines. People generally have the money. ;)

As I programmer, I know that bugs are inevitable. I judge bugs in a relative light. If it is a piece of shareware by one developer I am a lot more tolerant than a commercial application developed by an entire company that has a QA team.

There is one type of bug, however, that is never acceptable - data loss and/or corruption. This is the cardinal sin and developers should be, rightfully, chastised for such bugs.

I'll have to agree whole heartedly there. I am much more forgiving of small developers than of large software development houses.

But data loss truly is a major sin... For me it depends on how severe it is. If i lose a few minor edits during a session - so what (again, not for large/major companies though). That I don't mind. If my entire file is corrupted, then that's just evil.

Some of the most important software that I use is from small developers and has bugs that have caused minor data loss. This hasn't been a big problem as the value I get far exceeds that.

I'm curious about what people's views on bugs are.

I'm fairly tolerant if the software really helps me get things done and there's nothing else available. I use some software with some pretty major bugs, but everything else it does for me is SOOOO valuable that there's no way I'd abandon it.

For software where there are many alternatives, I'll abandon something in a heartbeat for something else and am very intolerant.

UPDATE:

I've finally switched my primary machine (mostly) over to my Vista box and have Windows Mail running there. Not too sure how it will pan out, but it seems good for now.

I forgot to mention WHY I keep email -- Mostly because I can refer to it later. Some email I must have to refer to later, but a lot doesn't matter. That's just me being a packrat and paranoid (i.e. I *MIGHT* need to refer to it later...) :)

I hang out at the JoelOnSoftware forums a lot. I mostly lurk like everywhere else. It's very useful for developers, but there are always some people that get nasty or "smart". It's still a very good place though.

Other places I read/post/lurk are the OISV, ASP, AISIP.

Try the survival mode - I couldn't clear the first level on it. (I think I like TD games better - I can win there!)

Here's an intro from another Zombie game -- made me laugh. The game wasn't that good, but the intro was sure funny:

If you're squeamish, this game isn't for you.

But if you love a screen that very quickly turns completely red with zombie brains splattered all over to the point that you can't even see anything on the screen anymore except for perhaps a bit of motion to tell you something is there... Endless Zombie Rampage is for you!

I'm not going to post a screenshot of it after a bit... Just imagine the screen is red!

Ah... Zombies never die! They just bite your friends!

If you end up wasting time... Don't blame me. Blame mouser for posting a link to that site first! :D

i have to disagree with renegade -- those links are a bit advanced.
if you are new to programming you need to start out much slower.

...

Maybe people can recommend some beginner sites for people just getting their feet wet in programming?

Yeah, you're probably right. I just like to dive right into the deep end, drown a couple times, then figure out where I need to be in the shallow end to get to the deep end safely! :D

It could have been worse though... I could have posted a link to Eclipse and SourceForge! ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?
« Last post by Renegade on February 01, 2008, 05:06 PM »
since i only reboot once every couple of weeks these days, i must admit i don't really care about boot time.
...

Good point. Similarly, I rarely reboot.

Another consideration is all the software that you need to load after the startup programs are done, and then getting them into a usable state.

As soon as my computer is loaded, I run:

* Editplus (my text editor) -- There are a few text documents that I load every time and keep them open always
* ALSong (Got to have music!)
* Windows Explorer (Still haven't switched back to using a replacement since I stopped using PowerDesk 4)
* Email client (Varies by computer)
* SQL client (when needed)
* Visual Studio
* Other things as required

That all takes time as well.

So there's another related question -- How long does it take to reboot and get your computer into a state that you can "start"?

Depending on what I'm doing, that takes me up to 20 minutes to get done. Rarely less than 5 minutes though. Usually around 10 minutes or so.

Coming full circle in this post... As such, I rarely reboot. :D

General Software Discussion / Re: How much email do you keep…and why?
« Last post by Renegade on February 01, 2008, 04:29 PM »
I delete spam but keep everything else. Consequently, I have multi-GB archives of email.

This is a real problem though. Outlook simply can't handle large volumes of email (I use Outlook at the office). Thunderbird craps out with critical bugs that will essentially make all of your email useless garbage after so long.

I'm back to using Outlook Express at home because it is faster & more reliable than anything else I've tried.

What I would really like to see is an email client that had a much more intelligent design than "flat files" to store email. Something with an RDBMS behind it would be perfect.

This is one of those things that I really wish that I had time to build myself... However, building an email client is very time consuming because there are so many legacy issues that you need to support. Not fun. Fun to program and play with, but not fun for consuming large amounts of time. :(

Does anyone know how the ads are served or where they appear? I'd just like to know that. (From here --- How Can OpenDNS be Free?.)

« Last post by Renegade on January 31, 2008, 04:21 AM »
...
so Renegade, exactly what model are you using?
...

I have 3 primary mice:

Home Primary Box: Logitech Optical Wheel (it's ok, but I'd rather have a ball mouse)
Home Dev. Box: Microsoft Optical Wheel (Don't like it at all)
Office Mouse (on 2 boxes through 2 KVMs for dual monitor support --- PAIN!): Microsoft Ball Mouse --- LOVE IT! It works perfectly.

I would have all ball mice, but I simply have a hard time finding them. They're extremely rare now here. The only option is optical mice... And since I only have the one good ball mouse, I took it to the office as I spend the entire day with it there. I'd go nuts with optical skips, and everyone else would go nuts with the increased amount of profanity --- I curse enough as it is when things go wrong. ;)

I really really really hate mouse pads, and refuse to use them. They just make life harder as you are always running off the side of it. They're just not comfortable to use. Ball mice handle any surface, but optical mice are sketchy. (Yeah - part of the problem is me...)

But no matter what, I find optical mice will "jump" occassionally. This I find completely unacceptable behaviour. It has caused data loss for me before, and we all know just how serious that can be. "Want to save or discard your changes?" "Oh, I think I'd like to SAVE them as I just spent a lot of time on it." Pointer suddenly jumps to "Discard"... Click. "Ooops..." [Crying heard in the background...] :(

General Software Discussion / Re: https by default?
« Last post by Renegade on January 30, 2008, 11:34 PM »
The thing is that unless you're logged into a site, or doing some kind of transaction where a password is required, or you're transmitting some kind of sensitive data (banking, email address, password, etc.), there really isn't much of a reason to use SSL. It only adds overhead and slows things down.

But having an option popup to change to HTTPS would be nice. I think you're right there about having a user action for it. Doing it automatically could pose real problems.

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your boot time?
« Last post by Renegade on January 30, 2008, 11:31 PM »
I'd say over 2m, but not because the actual "boot" takes that long, but because I don't want to do anything until all the startup software is loaded, and that's more than 2 minutes. The boot itself is less.

What you mean by "boot" may be different depending on how you look at it. Boot as for the OS, or boot as for 'ready to use with everything loaded'?

10222
General Software Discussion / Re: https by default?
« Last post by Renegade on January 30, 2008, 11:05 PM »
That's a pretty hard thing to do. Some web sites will use HTTPS for specific things and not others, so you might end up with things breaking. I don't think that it's really a generally feasible thing to do.

e.g. You've got some site that uses HTTPS for logins and whenever you're logged in, but nothing else. So it's available. Your extension sees that it's available. You may end up constantly hitting a login page for every page even with different URLs because the site sees that you're trying to use HTTPS, but you're not logged in, and so returns a login screen for every URL.

There are more problems with it as well. Basically, I think it's up to the user to check if they're on HTTPS when they want to be. Otherwise, you need to trust the site.

Think about it this way, if you're creating a site that uses HTTPS, you've probably got a good reason and will dictate where it is used. e.g. You can't see certain pages or certain content without HTTPS. etc.

i share your pain Renegade, that's why i started this thread. i can't even select some text because the damn mouse sends a quick double-click that unselects the text and i can't click anything that toggles, again for the same reasons. in other words, i don't know if i'm going or coming.. :)

I SOOOOO understand that...

Occasionally I need to use Japanese Windows in a VM... Very commonly it will go into some wierd SHIFT mode where no matter what I click on, it's like I've got the SHIFT key pressed, so it selects everything! Not the same problem, but it basically destroys my ability to use the OS. I have to reboot the OS in the VM and hope that it goes away, which it usually does.

But back to the hammer... I'd really LOVE to use the hammer on KEB. Wouldn't fix my screwed up mouse (still having troubles), but I'd feel better! :)

i'm using a wired optical mouse attached to the serial port. i've been using it for less than a month and previously i've used other optical mice on the same surface. the table has a smooth finishing & the colour according to the catalogue is "dirty oak". now i'm really thinking of getting a ball mouse, as Renegade suggested. :)

I cannot possibly express how much I prefer ball mice to optical mice. They simply work much better than optical mice. Sure you have to clean them now and then, but the mouse cursor goes where you want it to go.

But speaking of mouse problems...

I had to make a payment online through my bank... The Korea Exchange Bank... AAARRRGGGHHH! It's impossible to say how badly they screw things up!

In any event... During the extremely painful process of using their web site that I swear was designed by Satan himself, my mouse stops working... Go figure. They install all kinds of ActiveX ****ware nonsense.

How do you possibly manage to screw people's computers up so badly from a WEB SITE?

The short of it is that it took 45 minutes of farting around to get things back to normal. All for the sake of a mouse...

Sigh... :(

On another note, I really feel that it's worth spending a bit of money on a mouse and not buying some generic mouse. It's 1 of the 2 most important and primary input devices. The amount of pain that you go through when it stops functioning just isn't worth saving a few dollars. I use Microsoft & Logitech mice and will never ever use a cheap mouse again for as long as I live. Had too much pain in the past there.

Sigh... :(
