What I'd like to see is the complaint that the professors voted on.

Ditto -- who here would be surprised to find out they voted based on some totally overblown fantasy that this kid was some criminal mastermind repeatedly trying to hack into and bring down their computer systems and steal and misuse the private information of others.
10177
The fact that he, on his own, informed them about the vulnerabilities the first time, tells you everything you need to know about his intentions, his moral character, and the nature of the "threat" he supposedly posed.

The more I read about this the angrier I get.. I guess it hits close to home for me -- I could easily see this happening to me or any other student in the computer science departments that i've attended.  In fact I can easily see myself or friends *not* reporting such a discovery and being curious about what else was exposed.. Absolutely disgraceful behavior from the university -- I hope the CS students in that department start protesting loudly until its reversed -- and even then every professor in that department who voted for his expulsion should be treated with suspicion.

It would be nice to hear from the one CS faculty who among his appears did NOT vote for expulsion.  If anyone finds an interview of him I'd love to read it.  We need to celebrate those willing to stand up to this bureaucratic group-think like cowardly behavior.

It's fine to say he should not have run that automated testing software -- but the idea of expelling someone for that -- or anything even remotely close to that, is just unfathomable to me.. It's completely antithetical to the spirit of learning and curiosity about technology that you would want to foster in computer science students.

This is exactly the kind of student that a department should be happy to have and should spend their time encouraging and challenging and helping to flourish.

This is a student for god's sake -- the idea of applying these kinds of zero-tolerance paranoid security reactions to someone like that is just wrongheaded.
10181
From the details I've read this university and especially the computer science department of this university should be ashamed of its cowardly behavior -- expelling a student who was nice enough to report a security vulnerability to them.

I suspect this is one of those cases that will be lucky enough to get enough attention to be reversed -- one wonders how many similar episodes do not get attention.. Shameful.

After an initial meeting with Director of Information Services and Technology François Paradis on Oct. 24, where Mr. Paradis congratulated Mr. Al-Khabaz and colleague Ovidiu Mija for their work and promised that he and Skytech, the makers of Omnivox, would fix the problem immediately, things started to go downhill.

Two days later, Mr. Al-Khabaz decided to run a software program called Acunetix, designed to test for vulnerabilities in websites, to ensure that the issues he and Mija had identified had been corrected. A few minutes later, the phone rang in the home he shares with his parents.

“It was Edouard Taza, the president of Skytech. He said that this was the second time they had seen me in their logs, and what I was doing was a cyber attack...

..Following this meeting, the fifteen professors in the computer science department were asked to vote on whether to expel Mr. Al-Khabaz, and fourteen voted in favour.

From boingboing which says something I agree with as a former CS student:
The thing that gets me, as a member of a computer science faculty, is how gutless his instructors were in their treatment of this promising student.

Bonus gadget:

I really like these snap on can covers.  There are a ton of different brands but the screw-cap-type ones are the only ones I have found work well:

My gadget today is a soda can (beverage) chiller.

Along with tea, I drink quite a bit of soda (i know, bad habit) -- which i drink out of standard 12oz cans.  I usually have them refrigerated but sometimes not -- especially when guests arrived who want a flavor i don't keep in the fridge.

So this device can take a can from room temperature to very cold in only a few minutes.  They do work.

The best known one seems to be this "Cooper Cooler" brand -- they make quite a few models and they also work to chill wine and beer bottles:
http://www.amazon.co...hiller/dp/B0007LJNB4
416W8PY9NGL._SY450_.jpg

That one above is about $60 -- you can get more expensive models and cheaper ones on ebay too.

The way this device works is that you fill up the container with ice, and it rapidly SPINS the can or bottle for a few minutes.  By keeping the surface of the can/bottle exposed to ice while insuring the liquid inside circulates at the surface, the liquid inside is rapidly and evenly cooled.

Now, those models clearly look like the best performers, but I am a stickler for minimizing clutter and i didn't like the idea of having to fill this thing up with ice and plug it in, and store it, etc.  And i didn't think I had much use for cooling bottles.

So instead I bought a super low tech cheapie version of this on ebay, called the Frost Boss, which can be found for about $20:
http://www.amazon.co...s-1C3/dp/B008CQN3IA/
frost41D1yZudu2L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

This one is battery powered and the spinning device is only a little larger than the size of a coffee mug.

So what I do with it is i threw away the container that you are supposed to fill with ice, and kept the coffee mug size spinner.  I always keep a bag of ice in my freezer, so if i ever want to use this i simply take it out of cabinet, attach a can to it, turn it on, and place the pair in my freezer IN my bag of ice, close the freezer, and come back in 5 minutes to a cold can of soda.  No muss no fuss, no cords no wasted cabinet space, no ice water to clean up.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR startup/commandline parameters/arguments
« Last post by mouser on January 18, 2013, 02:24 PM »
It sounds like you were interested in the -search commandline argument, so you would call:

FindAndRunRobot.exe -search "blah blah"

to have FARR open up and start searching for "blah blah".

Welcome to the site Phileas -- I'm glad you like the program!

Ok in the help file look for a chapter called "Commandline Options", in it you will see a bunch of commandline options you can use to tell FARR to do stuff.

Here is the current list:

  • -standalone = start FARR visible and in taskbar, and exit on close of window
  • -search "search string" = start FARR visible (or bring up any running copy) and start a search
  • -show = start FARR visible (or bring up any running copy)
  • -hide = hide FARR if visible
  • -toggle = toggle display of farr
  • -exit = exit any running copy of FARR.
  • -exitifnotrunning = exit FARR unless it was already running and this was a second instance launched just to search or launch
  • -launch = start FARR (or invoke in a running copy) and launch a command (can use any normal FARR launch strings including setting user variables, etc.)
  • -unloadplugins = tell running instance of FARR to unload all plugins temporarily, so that plugin files can be replaced
  • -loadplugins = tell farr to reload temporarily unloaded plugins (must be balanced # of calls)

NOTE: You can launch a second instance of FARR with these arguments, and they will be PASSED ON TO THE FIRST INSTANCE and executed, without actually leaving a second instance running (so don't specify -exit unless you want to kill all running instances)

It's rare these days when a software site actually takes the time to use your software, and rarer still to get a nice real human email from them about it, so I just wanted to acknowledge their work.

Can you elaborate a little bit about what you mean by it dissapears? you mean that row that says "NOTE" is going completely, and you just have the text "By their fruits ye shall know them?"

the next time that happens can you try dragging the "Memo" bar above it to break out that part of the dialog and see if that has any effect?

i'll also look into it here.

Also there is a dedicated hotkey available for repeating the capture of the same area, if you need to keep capturing the same area over and over.
