First update in a long while:
2.32.01 - Feb 4, 2013
  • [Feature] RTMP multimedia links were not shown when multimedia protocol filter was enabled.
  • [MinorChange] Improved text labels for search filters.
  • [MinorChange] Changed auto network adapter test url and search string
  • [BugFix] An error about "Scrollbar property out of range" could be generated when resizing raw packet view panel.
  • [BugFix] Parentheses in urls were truncating urls at that point.
  • [Feature] View Live Packets option is now on main window and easily toggles live packet panel (size is remembered)
  • [Feature] Added datetime column to url grid.
  • [Documentation] Updated documentation with some links to a few popular downloader tools.
  • [Feature] Portable zip now uses ConfigDir_Default.ini which is overridden by the presence of a ConfigDir.ini file, so users unpacking the contents won't overwrite any custom ConfigDir.ini  they may have.
  • [Feature] Now using a dual package (installer and portable zip), with portable zip preconfigured for portable use; installer and executable are now signed.

Hopefully the next update will come sooner

« Last post by mouser on February 03, 2013, 07:02 AM »
Usually when an internet provider puts in a cap like this, they will also provide a url where you can go check on the bandwidth you have downloaded so far.

You could also get a firewall that will "approximately" keep track of this locally, but i encourage you to ask your ISP about where you can find out what THEY say you have used at any given time.

UrlSnooper / Re: REQ: Ability to see more of the RAW packet data
« Last post by mouser on February 03, 2013, 05:58 AM »
Let me try to help a bit on this, and assuming you have the packet view panel enabled:

If you finish snooping and then click on a found url, it will only show the packet that contained the URL.

If you want to see every packet as it is being sniffed, you can click the "Pause" button and then parse 1 packet at a time.  In this case you will see EVERY packet as it arrives.

I think what you are asking for is the ability to click on a found URL and then investigate the packets before and after it -- not live but after the fact.  This could indeed be a useful feature, but is not completely trivial to add. I will consider it though.

Until then, as Renegade says -- if you really want to do detailed packet analysis, the answer is a program dedicated to such things, like Wire Shark.

Cute.

Here's another one from me, that I've written about before, the Dymo label printer.

They make a few different models -- I have the cheap old one (I guess closest new model is the model450 for $100 but you can probably find older ones on ebay cheap).  It's extremely convenient and easy to use.

I'd recommend this to anyone who manually writes envelope address labels more than a couple times each month.

Hi Ramda, welcome to the site!
As Curt says, this post belongs in the forum area dedicated to LaunchBar Commander -- I will move it there shortly.

But meanwhile, let me try to help.

Can you try just using %Recent% and see if it shows any files? Let's tackle one problem at a time.
Maybe you could post a screenshot of your configuration of that node?
Also, could you tell us what operating system you are using?

Yes just uncheck the inner color checkbox if you want it transparent; or change the color if not and set the transparency value.

Yeah there's a sensor on the lid -- when you stand in front of it, it triggers.  Battery (or ac adapter) powered.

My post for today is an electric trash can.

I have one of these -- a big 18 gallon one, and I'm quite fond of it.  It looks nice and it keeps in odors and is hands free.

Now I have to say it's not without some annoyances and quirks, but after a few years of using it I'm still quite satisfied.  I'm not sure I would want one in rooms other than kitchen, because there is a slight delay in it opening and it wants to close soon after.  But for kitchen messes, not having to use your hands is a great benefit.

There are a bunch of different models and I have no reason to recommend one over the other.  Choosing your size is probably the most important decision to make.

Here's an amazon search page listing many:

I'm not a fan of freenhand capture -- to me i think it is far better to capture the entire screen and then select and crop WITHIN the program (rather than at time of capture), because doing so after the capture allows you to undo, zoom, etc.

Screenshot captor has tools in the interface for freehand and magic lasso selection/cropping.

My suggestion to people who want freehand capturing is to break yourselves of the habit of wanting to so precisely control the selection at time of capture, and go for a 2-step capture then crop.

« Last post by mouser on January 31, 2013, 10:32 PM »
Hi David.

I agree it would be useful to build it in.
I actually implemented a minimal freehand tool, but disabled it because it was a bit clunky and hard to fit in with the other object tools in terms of letting user be able to edit what they add.  I may try to add it back and we can see if it can be made to work well.

Having said that, SC was designed to work very well with external image editors, and your question about recommending a simple quick load external editor with this feature is a great one.

There are some good big free editing tools like the Gimp and Paint.net.. but i think you are probably wise to want a small fast one -- does anyone know a good fast free image editor that is particularly good at freehand markup?
10116
Having found nothing that really moves me, I've decided to write a simple version of this tool.

Since I have a bunch of other things that I'm working on that are much more important, this is only going to be a couple day project.
10117
What i want is:
2. Each day box should be a very simple click to edit plain text field so I can just easily write and edit the text notes for a given day.  I don't want to have a form pop up asking me start and stop times, etc.

That is, I just want to simulate a physical wall calendar: you can click to edit in any day box and it should act like a memo where you can simply edit and type the plain text in that box.

(this calendar is meant to be shown full screen where there will be enough room in each box to write enough notes).

There is no need for the program to know about time-of-day stuff, etc.  It just needs to let user easily see and edit the text note associated with each day -- each day "cell" should be an editable memo.
10118
hmm.. nothing suggested so far meets what i'm looking for..
i may have to code this myself.

Ok I need some help looking for an app.. If it doesn't exist maybe we can build it.

What I want is a very simplistic, minimalist Desktop Calendar application, with a very basic feature set -- but I'm quite picky about some of the user interface elements.

I have tried a bunch of Calendar/Scheduling information management applications, and I never stick with any of them..

And I *think* the main reason is that I don't have a lot of scheduling to do, I mainly want to add quick notes to a given day, maybe track a few birthdays and events.

So here's what I need:

  • 1. Nice elegant maximized display of the current month, shown just like a wall calendar, with a day for each month.
  • 2. Each day box should be a very simple click to edit plain text field so I can just easily write and edit the text notes for a given day.  I don't want to have a form pop up asking me start and stop times, etc.
  • 3. Quick toggle to and from tray.
  • 4. A yearly view and/or a summary list view, that makes it easy to see at a glance which upcoming days in future months have custom notes on them.  That is, I'd like a year view where i can see the days that have custom notes marked in a different color. And/Or a list view with just a list of days with custom notes.
  • 5. A way to provide a simple list of repeating events (birthdays).

I do *NOT* need:
  • 1. Alarms and audible/popup reminders
  • 2. Searching, Synchronizing, Printing.

Now if we did decide to code it ourselves, there are a couple of unusual features that I might consider adding, like:
  • Ability to configure a few custom fields that would be shown on each day, like a field for "Weight" or "Miles Run", etc., and which might be graphable.

Anyone else think this would be useful?  Every desktop app i've sen is designed to be a serious power tool for people with super busy schedules..
I just want as close as I can get to a physical wall calendar which let's me easily add notes to each day.

Anyone know of an application like this, free or otherwise?

Living Room / Story of how NewEgg Defeated a Patent Troll
« Last post by mouser on January 28, 2013, 10:04 PM »
This is a wonderful, heartwarming story about how online computer hardware retailer NewEgg fights back and destroys patent trolls who routinely get away with bullying and extorting money from businesses under the guide of legal threat.

NewEgg has long been a fantastic website to buy computer products from (and find product ratings by informed technical users) -- but this article casts NewEgg in a whole new light -- as a company with a personality and a fighting spirit.

.. it's a huge validation of the strategy the company decided to pursue back in 2007: not to settle with patent trolls. Ever. We basically took a look at this situation and said, 'This is bullshit,'" said Cheng in an interview with Ars. "We saw that if we paid off this patent holder, we'd have to pay off every patent holder this same amount. This is the first case we took all the way to trial. And now, nobody has to pay Soverain jack squat for these patents.

Nice part on page 2:

Ars: Why is Newegg able to pursue this strategy where other companies feel they shouldn't or can't?

We're majority-controlled by an extremely principled guy, our founder [Newegg CEO Fred Chang]. We have always been willing to sacrifice tactical gain for strategic success. We're successful because, since 2001, we have taken really good care of our customers.

Also, a lot of our systems are homegrown. Our CTO [James Wu, who testified at trial] wrote this code from complete scratch, without knowing about these patents or anybody else's. His approach to coding is different. In the Soverain case in particular, it gave us a tremendous advantage in being able to explain that we didn't infringe. Our shopping cart is architected differently.

And we'll take a case through trial as a matter of principle because we want to accomplish the purpose of making good law. Like eBay did, like Quanta did when they challenged LG. It's part of our duty as a good corporate citizen to try to accelerate the rationalization of patent law.
