Actually, I came here hoping to find a mentioning of today's Bits du Jour -offer: ABBYY PDF Transformer+

Does anyone here know if the ABBYY OCR part is the same in both PDF Transformer+ and Screenshot Reader ?  :tellme:

no warnings for me. Maybe I am not well protected?
To me, the linked page was only mildly entertaining! But of course, I have no children (because I really am well protected!) and no parents alive, so...

General Software Discussion / how to delete this empty file? (problem solved)
« Last post by Curt on May 23, 2015, 11:40 AM »
Try this - download SetACL Studio (which has a 30 day free trial) and navigate to the folder and see exactly what's there. This is useful software -

- "useful software"; you can say that again!
It didn't ask any questions, but deleted the empty file just like it would have deleted any other file. BRAVO!
Thank you, x16wda,

(but of course, normal price is €90 - so it should be able to do a lot more than those freeware apps)

Thanks again to all of you, it has been extraordinary comforting to see so many trying to help out!

The next obvious suggestion for a stuck file in Windows is to boot a Linux LiveCD and remove the bugger

forgive me for not applauding. 1) I will click a wrong button and everything will brake down. I have never had anything to do with Linux, and being stressed is not the right time to begin - this is not just a question of being hold in the hand while clicking my way, but more what I could happen to do when the hand is not held. 2) My laptop has no CD drive, and 3) 'the bugger' really doesn't exist.

Of course the real reason is, I am scared of computers!

I am grateful that you've been trying to help me out on this, guys, Thank You!

I have been testing all of your suggestions, except for the obvious one: Recovery via System Restore. I can't use System Restore here, because the empty file is older than the oldest Restore Point from yesterday morning! I have now been battling this file for two days.

One "fact" has been mentioned several times by various message boxes: The file does not exist in the system / Windows,
but then it must somehow 'merely' be a problem in Explorer? Eh..., how can something be a problem in Explorer but not in Windows :tellme:

I have also tried to re-install QTTabbar, and to run WinUtilities 7 'cleaner', and of course to only work in Safe Mode ("unlocker"s don't work in Safe Mode)...
but the empty bugger is still (not) there.  :(

Normally, programs like Unlocker, IObit Unlocker, LockHunter, etcetera, can delete an empty file. Unfortunately, this time they can't.

Maybe the problem is that one of the tricks I've tried to use, was to click "rename and delete". I now #imagine# that this was a really wrong thing to do, because how can you rename a file that isn't there? No, you can't! So now there is a key in the registry or something, saying that this file (that doesn't exist) should be renamed, and therefore no-one can touch it until the renaming (that cannot happen because the file really isn't there) has been done!?? So Windows is waiting for the renaming to happen, but it cannot happen. Is this it? Is that why it has been impossible for me, to delete this piece of nothing?

I have rebooted (several times) and everything. Not being able to rename, includes not being able to add extension.

Is there a place where I can cancel the renaming job (if that is a problem at all)?  :tellme:

Living Room / HTTPS exploit ready to terrorise
« Last post by Curt on May 22, 2015, 07:15 AM »
Normally I will would just leave an extended title and a link, but this article is too important & too sad, to risk being unnoticed:

I don't know if this is old news, but I think it certainly is bad news:

HTTPS exploit ready to terrorise thousands of websites and mail servers
By Jamie Hinks http://www.techradar...mail-servers-1294458

Diffie-Hellman downgrade weakness allows hackers in.

Almost 100,000 HTTPS websites are under threat from a new vulnerability born out of attempts by the US in the early 1990s to break the encryption used by foreign entities.

First reported by Ars Technica, the 'Logjam' vulnerability affects 8.4% of the world's top one million websites in addition to a slightly higher percentage of the mail servers in the IPv4 address space, according to researchers.

"Logjam shows us once again why it's a terrible idea to deliberately weaken cryptography, as the FBI and some in law enforcement are now calling for," J. Alex Halderman, one of the scientists behind the research, told Ars Technica in an email. "That's exactly what the US did in the 1990s with crypto export restrictions, and today that backdoor is wide open, threatening the security of a large part of the web."

The exploit lets eavesdroppers view data passing over encrypted connections and then modify it to successfully perform man-in-the-middle attacks. It is born out of a flaw in the transport layer security (TLS) protocol that allows websites and mail servers to set up encrypted connections with end users, and the Diffie-Hellman key exchange is where the weakness lies.

Attackers are using Logjam to take advantage of a subset of servers supporting Diffie-Hellman, which allows two parties that have never met to set up a special key even if they are communicating over an unsecured connection.

To take advantage of vulnerable connections, attackers have to use the number sieve algorithm to precompute data. After doing that they can successfully perform man-in-the-middle attacks against the same vulnerable connection.

Keep your browser updated
Only Internet Explorer has been updated to protect against the exploit, although the researchers have been in touch with the developers of Chrome, Firefox and Safari to ensure that a fix will be implemented that rejects encrypted connections under a minimum of 1024 bits.

Researchers are advising server administrators to switch off support for the DHE_EXPORT ciphersuites that permit Diffie-Hellman connections to be downgraded and they have even provided a guide on how to do so securely. For end users, make sure your browser or email client is kept completely up-to-date with the very latest version.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: 50% off discount for RightNote - 19 May
« Last post by Curt on May 19, 2015, 03:48 PM »
I find it difficult to understand why the author of RightNote is using so much space on his own homepage, to talk about Evernote. Is Evernote better, or merely better known, than RightNote?
 :tellme:

The Evernote note type takes RightNote to the next level, and allows you to store selected notes in the cloud and access them from any mobile device, browser or desktop using the Evernote service. The new Evernote Manager makes it easy for you to sync multiple Evernote accounts and notebooks with RightNote. You can then search through all these notebooks simultaneously with the multi-notebook search feature.

Check out how to get up and running with the Evernote integration here http://bauerapps.com/evernote-tree/

^ :) reminds me of a video a year or two ago, where the new technological idea of 'the book' gets introduced. Two monks, I think, one showing the other how it works. (I *think* it was another one from Scandanavia somewhere.) Anyone remember that one?

yes, "of course" ... but it was 8 years ago!

It was (very) Norwegian.

My very first donationcoder post says #483. My next post also says #483. And the next and the next and the next! Where's post #1? Where's post #2? Where's post #3? They all say #483! There's something seriously wrong here! I'm getting sick and fed up with this crap!

it's a good thing you posted it here in this particular thread, otherwise I would have fallen into the trap and started talking about the difference between "Post" and "Posts".

General Software Discussion / Re: uBlock ad blocker and unwanted behavior
« Last post by Curt on May 17, 2015, 12:48 PM »
from another thread where it (also?) was misplaced:

Definitely used to be µblock.

The name on the Mozilla homepage is still µBlock (microBlock), not uBlock (youBlock), so you're obviously right, f0dder - even though the name really is uBlock (youBlock)! What a ridiculous story. https://addons.mozil...irefox/addon/ublock/

I have just installed it with my old Firefox 23, (Firefox is officially at version 38), and as usual Mozilla lied to me and said the add-on wouldn't work on such an old browser. Of course it does. I am tired of all these patriotic lies. If accused, the answer is "oh, it's for your own safety!". Eh, yeah, but you lied, so how can I trust you?! Every crook is dreaming of entering all computers via a forced oh, it's for your own safety-update!

Okay, I have finally counted to a hundred and am calm again... so now I can see that uBlock already has blocked 2 requests, even though I am also running AdBlock Plus, (ABP). Maybe uBlock (youBlock) is okay.

-------------

Thank you for the explanation, wraith808. It all makes a lot more sense now. Ehh..., sense and sense... I mean, I might understand it better now  :-[

Not really a link, because you have to go to the store and search

Found Deals and Discounts / award-winning calculator
« Last post by Curt on May 13, 2015, 05:49 PM »
My calculators are too advanced for me, which is why I was looking for a new, simpler one in the first place. But the too advanced ones are part of the suite from ESB:
http://www.esbconsul...om/esbcalc/index.htm
http://www.esbconsul...om/esbcalc/suite.htm

ESBCalc Pro Scientific Calculator $19US
ESBCalc Pro Suite $55 US includes the 5 Calculators below, (5 x $19 = $95, thus saves $40) as well as new Calculators as they are added.

ESB Calc Pro Suite - this provides all the ESB Calculators and Unit Conversion Utilities at a bargain price. When buying the suite you get licenses to all the calculators - currently ESBCalc Pro, ESBProgCalc Pro, ESBFinCalc Pro, ESBDateCalc Pro and ESBUnitConv Pro - plus you get additional calculators as they are added to the suite.

You only need to register once - all upgrades are free for the life of the product.
-ESB

-they cannot quite make up their minds if there should be a space or not; is it ESBCalc or ESB Calc...

ESBCalc Pro is an Enhanced Scientific Calculator for Windows Platforms with Infix Notation, Full Exponential Notation support, Brackets, Scientific Functions (Trigonometric, Hyperbolic, Logarithmic - including Base 10, Base 2 & Natural - plus more), Memory, Paper Trail, Result History List, Heaps of Constants, User-defined Constants and Integrated Help.

Also includes Floating Decimal Point, Lakh Formatting, Paper Trail Comments and many other enhancements to the User Interface and Calculator Engine. You can also do Descriptive Statistics, Days between Dates, Degrees/Minutes/Seconds entering, Hexadecimal/Decimal Conversions and Fraction/Decimal Conversions.

For those who don't like Precedence of Operators, that can also be turned off as ESBCalc Pro is highly configurable.
