Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: What is Flock?
« Last post by clif_notes on November 05, 2005, 06:22 PM »
Off joke, but on topic: I've been using Flock for a few hours, and just want to say it's really good!  I like the simplified gui, and in general it's a little more sophisticated and elegant than FF.  I've been running the FF 1.5 rc for a few weeks, and like that (except that it doesn't play with RoboForm yet), but Flock appears to have all the good points of FF, along with being a nicer design.  I'm new to del.icio.us, but I've really needed something like that in order to be able to access my favorites from all the various machines I find myself using.  Flock =

Hi m_s,

Flock is very nice. I just can't see to ween myself off of Opera long enough to get much use out of it. I have a Furl account now that works nicely with my browser and it's just as good as Del.icio.us is. As you mentioned, I'd love to see support for the AI Roboform Firefox extension in Flock. If they add that, and a way to save the sites and pages you were on when you close it, I'll switch to Flock happily. On the other hand, maybe FF can be tweaked to include all the Flock features. Hmmmm

Welcome to Clif Notes Newsletter
October 30, 2005

Hi everyone.

I write this newsletter for fun. I don't get paid for it or ask for donations and I don't spend all day every day making sure every article is absolutely correct. So, if you see something wrong, don't get mad. I publish reviews from myself and other people out there who are just average PC users like you. Will I change that? I think not.

Here are the headlines from this week's letter.

Hi Bro,

I heartily agree with you. In most cases, more options are better. Sometimes, however, you run into a program that does only one thing, and does it so well that you can't imagine that you would need anything else.

In the case of the BT client, I can imagine a few things I would add to it if I thought I'd use them. For example, a history function might be nice. And if I'm going to add that, what about a nice search feature for finding BT downloads all over the net. If I add much more than that, I'm going to end up with some kind of new social software like some of the file sharing applications and services. You know, communities, chat, etc.

Oh, but don't let me distract you from your mini-review.  :D
105
Ok, BrotherS, you are just going to have to provide me with a mini-review of Azureus now. I like the BT client. It's so simple. Why do I need more options?

Warning: Your response could be broadcast in my newsletter. LOL
106
I use BitTorrent, which is by the same team which started the BT thing. Now Opera is starting to support it as part of the browser.
107
I was swearing and cursing and installing all kinds of players.

Hi Renegade, codec problems? Take a look at my good friend GeorgeH's review of K-lite at his blog. George is a great guy and a very thorough reviewer. The view program that comes with K-lite is A++ in my book. I've used it for years. I can't remember finding a type of movie file it couldn't read.

Yikes! Almost forgot the link.

Taken from my newsletter.

What is Flock?

Website - Download - Freeware
reviewed on 22 Oct 2005

I received an email out of the blue two days ago. It told me I was a "FlockStar", one of only 283 people chosen, and I could now try the developer's preview of Flock. I emailed them back and asked them. "What is Flock?". I've gotten no reply to that yet, but here's what the "About" section of their website says.

Well, we're pretty much a bunch of regular folks trying to shake things up. We started Flock to build tools that empower people and smooth out some of the more hairy parts of living and working online. As it is, we live and breathe this stuff everyday and wanted better tools to do the things that we love doing online.

I've been able to figure out that Flock is a new type of "social browsing" service that lets people share internet links, blogs, and rss feeds.

So, now I'm in the process of installing Flock and setting it up. It hasn't been trouble-free, but it looks like they've made a good attempt to make it as painless as they can.

I installed the Flock browser. The install went well and now I can see that their browser is apparently a customized version of Mozilla Firefox. I like that idea already. Not many browsers allow you to tweak and configure them like FF does. I found a mirror site that allows anyone to download Flock.

Once I launched the Flock browser, it comes up with a home page that runs you through 5 ways to get started using Flock.

  • ... get ready to share your favorite sites: go grab a del.icio.us account.
  • ... get yourself a blog.
  • Start blogging!
  • Check out history right from the search box.
  • Forget old-school bookmarks. Meet Flock's Favorites.

I went out and set up a del.icio.us account. That was easy. Just add a login name and email address.
I already had a blog at blogger.com but for some reason I couldn't get it to register correctly in the Flock browser's blog setup dialog. So I set up a new WordPress account and Flock had no problem accepting it. Once I had the blog, I tried using the blogging tool built into the Flock browser. I had trouble getting the bulleted list functions to work and it was putting weird empty space in the entry, so I gave up on that. This things not even in beta yet, so I expect a few bugs. I did see something in the blogging tool that looks cool. You can grab other blog feeds or Flikr pictures and drag them from your "Topbar" into your blog post. That actually seems to work. So, now I'm off to grab a Flikr account.
I took a look at the searchable history and the new Flock favorites. I hope they work right because they look pretty cool.

Well folks, that's it for now. I still don't know what I'm going to do with this Flock browser but I'll try to keep you posted as to how I'm using it, if I use it at all. Here are Flock's 13 suggestions on how I can use it.

Late breaking news

George Here!

Welcome to DonationCoder George. I hang out here quite a bit lately. Pull up a keyboard and make yourself at home.

You won't find many other forums out there that have so many people willing to try new things and write about them.

Be sure to check out the reviews and mini-reviews. Top-notch stuff.

I use [email protected] at work. I email them and get a reply back.

Here are the others, courtesy of http://www.copresco.com/pkgtrack.htm
Use E-MAIL instead of the web to track multiple shipments at one time. Note: Your e-mail software must be set up with your e-mail address as the default reply-to address in order to receive the shipment information.

United Parcel Service
[email protected]
Include a UPS tracking number in the body of your message. Your tracking information will be sent by return e-mail. UPS allows up to 25 packages at a time to be tracked via e-mail.

Fed Ex
[email protected]
Up to 20 shipments can be tracked via one e-mail.
No entry is required on the subject line. In the body of the message type the word "airbill" followed by a space, followed by your package tracking number.Do not include dashes or spaces in the tracking number.
Follow the airbill number with a space and the destination country code. The country code is required even if you are tracking a US domestic shipment.
Follow the country code with a space and the ship date (+/- 4 days) entered in the MMDDYY format.
Each package tracking number must appear on a separate line, formatted as above.
Typing the word "end" will stop processing commands (useful if your mailer adds a signature).

Airborne Express
[email protected]
Your e-mail can list up to 20 airbill numbers separated by commas.
The airbill numbers must be in the message area of the e-mail, not the subject line.
Enter only airbill numbers with separating commas. No additional text is needed.

Emery Worldwide
[email protected]
Enter "SN-" (for shipment number) before each number. You may track up to 30 numbers at once. Emery has a very robust email tracking system. Check here for details.

Purolator Courier
[email protected]
List the PIN's you wish to track within the body of the message, one PIN per line. No subject is required.

Roadway Express
Roadway does not have email tracking in the usual sense. It does have a nifty email notification system, which can reduce the need for tracking.

Yellow Transportation
Like most common freight carriers, Yellow requires you to register to gain access to its powerful email monitoring services.

Bax Global
If you are a North American customer of Bax, registering as a secure user will allow you access to email notification services.

ABF Freight Systems
[email protected]
Your tracking inquiry will be answered by a live person, so no particular sytax must be used.

I have to confess I got very confused on their website?

Oh well I'll stop rambling now ...

Carry on ...

Biggest problem to me is bloat - a lot of the features are never used by 99.99999% of users.

I'd settle for MS compatible files in an app that doesn't support all the bells and whistles but works efficiently. When I start up an MS Office app I sometimes think I may as well go and make a coffee!

I have found that this Suite is considerably less bloated.

117
Hey Cliff, I'll definitely start a review of eMule for next week. It's going to take some time because there are so many features in the program.
More in the review....it could end up being more of a fanatical rant than a review though because I really love the client. :D

Great. I look forward to reading a good rant.

George writes some of the best reviews I've seen around. He's a member of my wiki and is featured in my newsletter whenever he gets around to writing a new one.

I like the way he uses CamStudio to capture and display tutorials covering the software he writes about.

Good idea. The more the merrier. So far, I haven't found any other way to get the readers involved. I did have my own forum, but even I didn't use it often. LOL

Great review Zaine. I'll take another nibble off the fruit of the tree of knowledge hosted here at DonationCoder.  Hopefully it'll make a good apple pie for my readers.  ;)

I will publish this weekend.

Living Room / Re: nice article on "Open Source Versus Commercial Software"
« Last post by clif_notes on October 20, 2005, 11:41 PM »
I love Open Source software. The author of the article makes a valid point. People (coders) need to be compensated. Open Source will always be the poor step child. I don't find that disturbing. I've always rooted for the underdog.

Does this sound strange coming from me, the guy who says "Why buy when you can get it free?".
Actually, the inspiration that's driven me to find freeware over the years is simple. Lack of $$$$!  ;)

The fact that I love freeware and open source doesn't mean I will go out and use warez or download copyrighted materials. I find that practice to be immoral. I support the rights of all those who wish to enforce their legal rights to their creations.
124
I dunno, it's kinda catchy.

Official Memoy, Official Memoy, Official Memoy, Official Memoy, Official Memoy, Official Memoy ...

Not nearly as bad as She sells, seashells by the seashore, but I could see how they might slip up.

So when is version 3.0 due, 2019? ...Other major features in version 2.0 include a completely redesigned interface that provides multi-pane views, floating toolbars and native desktop integration, all which mirrors elements of Microsoft Office.

Wait, I thought the idea is to be NOT like Microsoft Office! WTF, mate?
-BetaNews - OpenOffice.org 2.0 Final Launches

Good point Zaine. Open Office is playing catch-up most of the time. They do have some features that are better than MS Office. I'm not surprised they'd copy the most popular features.
