Is it possible that something else has happened to cause the shutdowns and not the RAM?

Of course it is possible. It is also possible that the 512mb RAM was not the cause of the original slowness. If it were the new stick or a mismatch, I'd certainly expect that restoring the hardware to its previous state would stop the shutdowns. Have you tried a restore from before the time the shutdowns started? The PSU is another potential cause of the problems. Maybe someone more expert will be along soon to give more precise advice.

If it is not obvious what is wrong, my experience suggests that the first thing to swap out is the PSU. They often give rise to intermittent faults and, by and large, you get what you pay for with them and cheap ones are generally to be avoided.

It sounds as if you are looking for a Task Manager, but the Google Calendar reference confuses me a bit because that's not so hot at task management.

I'd suggest ToDoList2. Can be used very simply, but has awesome power available. Free. Very active development (and has been for some years). Very responsive developer. But not at all like Google Calendar.

It all depends on the features you need as well as the type of interface you prefer.

Sunbird is another Calendar app rather than a task manager. Is it really a calendar that you need? Spicebird adds email (thunderbird engine) to sunbird derived calendar. Alternative calendar apps would include Essential PIM and Calimanjaro.

Also checked with Powerdesk. Powerdesk much slower than SearchGT, on a par with Dopus & XYplorer.

Yes, I agree it works fine if you use LockNote etc - as you say that would make it another way of achieving a Password Manager system. Longer winded though, unless you are already using Locknote etc.

Don't know about the 'remember password option' in browsers. Certainly convenient, but not sure it is that secure.

I'm not sure I really understand the point of standalone password generators. The password can be relatively hard to guess or crack and can be used - but how is it to be remembered? It will be too random/long for most humans memory to be reliable. And, if it is recorded somewhere, couldn't it be found by someone else?

I understand the point inside a password manager which will only need one master password. I understand the value of the two input system (master password and account name) that effectively only needs one master password and use this myself on minor accounts where security does not really matter (though I still record them in Keepass). But I don't really understand the point of just generating uncrackable impossible to remember passwords without a method of recording them that is itself secure.

At some point I tried "scanning" parts of very wide books like that (they wouldn't fit in my scanner). Quite a hard endeavor... I guess I just didn't have the right equipment -- if I had, it would've been damn quick!

I find that with a decent camera there's no book that is too big or wide. By far the fastest way of digitising that sort of item. Also good for stuff that other people have and don't want you to borrow to take a copy.

For most letters etc, I just rely on my document scanner which is very fast and automatic.

I've always been amazed how people focus on cameras as ways of taking pictures rather than as tremendously versatile and portable data capture devices. One of my daughters once complained of the amount of time she was spending copying up notes she'd borrowed from friends after a few weeks off school when she was ill. I suggested that she just photograph them, and even demonstrated and showed how they could be searched in Evernote and that she could print them if she wanted, but she still seemed to feel it would only be right if she wrote them out by hand.

I've come late to some very long threads and sometimes, when the subject interests me enough, have read the whole thread. Usually going backwards in time first and occasionally going through again forwards to make sure I have fully followed it.

Some threads though don't really have a single thread. The 'recent' Evernote thread for instance started on EN2.2 and ended on EN3, with the obligatory diversion onto SQLnotes for a time. Moderators on some boards would proactively split threads like that. Would that be better? It would certainly be a bigger workload for the mods.

Some of my favourite boards don't have separate forums and don't have threads. There is just a single continuous series of posts. One I am looking at now has nearly 250,000 posts. Now that is what I call a long thread.

I agree. If they want to hang on to the monopoly, they will have to release their post Vista windows before killing XP off AND it will have to be much better than Vista.

tbh, it doesn't matter greatly to me. I've got every system installed with Linux too (apart from the Vista laptop and that might change soon as I'm told it has got much slower). I won't be installing Vista on any system that currently has XP and I'll just keep XP going unless it becomes too risky or unproductive.

But a big advantage of Evernote is its ability to read handwriting & images. I had thought that one nice little task that needs doing and I could try SQLnotes on was recording the bottles in my wine cellar (just a little wine cellar in case you are wondering) - what's in the bottles and their position in the racks. Then I realised that the easiest and most comprehensive approach would actually be to photograph the fronts and backs of the bottles and just load the photos into Evernote. No need to write, no need to type, no need to worry about fields etc.

• Press F12 to move to the grid
  
• Press INS to add a new item
  
• Press F12 to move focus to the HTML pane

• Hit shortcut key. A dialog comes up where you can enter the item title. A drop-down matches existing ones.
  
• If you select an existing one, focus goes to that item
  
• If what you typed does not match an existing one, a new item is created

If you hit a different shortcut (say CTRL-L), the same dialog opens but allows you to create a link to an existing or a new item.

None of these services are doing this just because they like us.  I do wish that companies providing free applications or services would come clean and tell us how they're making their money from their respective applications/services.

I don't know that I would worry too much about privacy if I were using this sort of service. I'd always make sure that anything I uploaded was very well encrypted and that should be that.

For web images I'd either paste them in the html pane (or use ctrl+alt+n -- to call the "add item" window -- and paste it in the html part)

Tried this and no dice. No image will paste in the html pane. Copy image to clipboard from webpage - but nothing to paste in this pane.
