That's a WHOLE lot faster than I can scan with my ancient HP flatbed - I'm guessing, but I doubt I can do more than 3 sheets a mintue max.

And your HP probably doesn't do double sided automatically as part of the quoted speed.

If you need properly portable, then the S510 isn't it.

Otherwise the difference in numbers makes the S510 much more usable as well as sturdier. I'm not sure I'd trust it to do 50 sheets at a time - but that probably means I wouldn't trust the S300 to do 10.

If your projected usage is low enough to make the numbers for the S300 seem OK, then do you really have enough need to justify the expense at all?

1778
Having checked the difference between the S500 & the S300, it seems that the S500 is a heavier duty machine - so please take my comments on the basis that my only experience is with the S500 & equivalents.

General Software Discussion / Re: Carbonite Online Backup
« on: April 21, 2008, 09:13 AM »
Thanks, but I meant I don't understand the difference between hosting a website and putting your private backup files on the space?
-Perry Mowbray (April 21, 2008, 05:25 AM)

That's what I was trying to address.
If everyone only has their websites there, then the space needed is websiteGB.
If they have their backup files there too, then the space needed is websiteGB + backupBG.

If some people only have backups, then it is not necessarily more expensive to host them - but most websites are very small in terms of space, and even smaller in terms of transfer so the average backup usage is likely to be higher.

I'm not sure what this policy is meant to do though, as I thought that data storage at $x/month would be worth the same to them as a html storage at the same $x/month? Where do they lose out with just data storage, or is it just data storage is worth more than a website?
-Perry Mowbray (April 21, 2008, 03:37 AM)

It basically increases their costs by increasing the average amount stored on each account. the amounts of space and bandwidth they quote cannot be economically provided at the price they charge. They rely on many customers not using much - and it is the average usage that decides their actual cost base.

Dreamhost are pretty accommodating though. It's unlikely that they'd see it as a problem with most users, and if they did with you, the'd discuss it before doing anything.

Congratulations well deserved.

I downloaded Screenshot Captor a while ago and thought "WOW, how powerful!"

And since then I've nearly always used the free Faststone prog.  :-[ :-[ :-[

Mostly because I'm used to it, and it's simple, and my needs are simple.

I really ought to tell myself to fire Screenshot Captor up more often.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« on: April 21, 2008, 04:05 AM »
Pierre might add the ability to "import" the doc format when the MS Word will be integrated to SQLNotes as an HTML editor. But I don't know...  :-[

If I had a robot attached to the computer, I think he'd add the ability to do the washing up from inside SQLnotes  ;D

I'm not sure that adding the doc format would necessarily be that helpful in the end. There are so many versions of the doc format and all different so, unless they were all added, someone is likely to end up frustrated. Adding them all would probably be good, but a lot of work, and neverending; then there would be OO etc too.

I have to say that I do enjoy reading the Q & A s in this thread. I know at some stage I will attempt the learning curve, and I'm hoping that this prepares me. But while I have other stuff that works, and while it is still in rapid development, I can always afford to wait another few months.

I've had a lot of scanners over the years, including a number with document feeders.

I now have a ScanSnap (I think mine is a S500). There is no comparison with previous scanners. It is massively fast and convenient. I use it for almost anything that comes in that I don't want to lose. Lots of post etc, as well as documents. I now regard it (or something similar) as a must have and, if it goes wrong, I will replace it immediately.

Occasionally it will feed more than one page at a time (as do all feeders). I have heard that sometimes they deteriorate and need of of the feed rollers replacing. I've also heard that some machines have a problem with this from the start. Mine seems fine.

Not at all cheap, but well worth the money.

You could always keep the name and change it too.

How about CHASTE?

Clipboard Help And Spell (Text, Everything).   :)

« on: April 18, 2008, 01:41 PM »
it actually wouldn't be too hard to add capture of all clipboard formats (images, html, rtf, etc.) if this is something people wanted - i really use these tools only for text, but i can see a case for being more flexible.

Did this ever get added? If it did, I haven't found it yet. And it is a pretty essential feature for me.

With it, I could design a RTF form and then paste it from CHS whenever I wanted to use it - and in whichever program I wanted. One of many examples of uses I'd have for it.

I've only recently started playing with CHS, and it never occurred to me that this feature may not be present.

Spanish and French translations of ToDoList available HERE - top left of page.

Both versions appear to be a bit old - especially the Spanish (3.2 Vs 5.5 beta), but maybe you can help Dan update the language file to the current version. 8)

I like buttons. MTExplorer is a bit too minimal for me.

Dormouse, what is the magnifier feature you refer to? I didn't see it/play with it when I had Q-Dir installed...

Top right corner. Click on the magifying glass and you have a - wait for it - magnifying glass to move around the screen; click again when you are doing it and it switches off.

AbstractSpoon's ToDoList does this very well. We've had it working fast across a network with 10+ users concurrently. To work with a lot of users at once, you do need to configure it to work the way you want. Initial interface is very full (& can seem scary compared to a lot of software now) but is massively efficient once you start using it. Biggest issue is that the column titles are set which might be a problem if you don't think they can be made to fit your circumstances. We just keep finding more and more things that it is the best solution for - and that is true even for people who see themselves as IT illiterate technophobes.

Completely free.

Who needs a file finder when you have a built in magnifier? :)

Seriously, I've found that I have had it open most of the time since I found it here. I already have Dopus - and still use that for a lot of things but the flexibility of the 4 panes for drag and drop etc is very useful to me. Haven't wished for more than 4 (yet).

I don't need an integrated file finder. I have SearchGT (& Locate32) as well as Dopus.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is Firefox 3.0 the "Fat Elvis?"
« on: April 15, 2008, 11:34 AM »
It's usually been on pages with java (not javascript) or flash... so you might say "it's not an Opera problem"

I think Opera is head and shoulders above FF & ie for usability, but I have used it for years. I still use FF & ie because some sites only seem to work on FF/ie and others on ie alone. I find Opera pretty stable (usually have about 30 tabs open, +/- 10 or so), but there are sites that freeze it. Only solution I have found to that is to guess the site and to close that tab quickly when restarting Opera before it loads whatever is giving the problem.

It's the most annoying thing about Opera, but Opera is pretty standards compliant and I don't know what more they can do other than become much more popular so those sites test their functioning with it as well as ie and the others.

Living Room / Re: Offline Computing :The End
« on: April 12, 2008, 04:40 PM »
Virtually all my programs can be, and are, used offline. My line goes down quite often so I could not consider working purely on line. I don't see everything being online as feasible until there is fibre to every home & office (or wireless equivalent). And I don't see that happening any time soon or not so soon.

Does the preview option offer more than image formats?

I couldn't get any to work, though thumbnails showed text etc (but not docs or pdfs). Maybe it needs a dose of stellents  :)

I've just had a look. Seems very impressive for a free file manager, though I haven't worked out how to get the view in the bottom left of your screenshot.

I don't think I've seen another free and portable file manager as good as this. A 4 pane file manager, each pane with its own tree view if that is wanted. I can actually think of times when I would use this rather than Dopus or anything else (sometimes I have 2 instances open just because I'm doing a lot of switching between more than 2 directories).

Very good find.

I just had a thought.. should we actually try to organize a "official" boycott/protest against McAfee?
But doesn't anyone with any sense/knowledge avoid McAfee anyway?

General Software Discussion / Re: GAOTD & Virus
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:52 PM »
Here's the info from the comments in last sat. GAOTD...........

Quotes from a remarkably ignorant and chauvinistic poster. Seemed to think that 'Eastern bloc' (sic) meant Asian rather than East European and being suspicious of everything, but not careful enough to avoid being ripped off multiple times. The British Virgin Islands (in the Caribbean) were reported in 2000 to have over 41% of offshore company registrations in the world. All it means is that the GAOTD co is registered there, presumably for tax reasons. No idea why he thinks a lot of the progs are coming from China ... or what it has to do with the Outpost AV.

When I read the comments I immediately unsubbed from GAOTD.  :(
Nothing to do with GAOTD really. Just that the prog (todays download) severely mucked up some computers. As said, AVs get so deep it is easy for them to do damage. I'm always careful which of these I load, and am aware they may give rise to difficulty.
